Solid and funny old fashioned play, shades of Ayckbourn, a bit of Wilde and also Plautus, One servant, Two masters vibe in first act. Nice acting, usual high standard from this venue. The play discusses women’s work and marriage but doesn’t say anything new just says it in a pleasant, frothy kind of way. Yes I agree with all that, an entertaining couple of hours. Very good acting and direction. But as is usually the way with "rediscoveries" a second-rate play. I read some Dorothy L. Sayers novels and short stories recently and found them quite long-winded and plodding. I think some first-class TV adaptations of her work have given me a mistaken impression about the quality of her writing. Tom Littler in the auditorium throughout, he really is one of the most visible and approachable ADs in London, he will be appreciated in Richmond. Sorry to miss you Jan. we really do need badges 😁

Except of course the Royal patents were issued long after they knew the first child was a boy. So that wasn’t actually the reason - they knew already that it wasn’t a problem for George to outrank his siblings, as future King. There have been occasions when the number 2 actually became the Monarch, notably the Queen’s own father so this change is very significant. Princess Margaret resented all her life that she didn’t get the same education as her sister. So now we know Charlotte and Louis will get the same education, same attention and will be able to make a full contribution if called upon. So it didn't matter that they knew their first baby was male. (And in the light of current controversies, it makes sense not to define the gender of the future monarch.)

just read that the final nights of the season have been cancelled. Understandable Would have been a wonderful and emotional evening with a rousing National Anthem, no? They didn't trust the audience to be respectful. Big mistake. Imagine having tickets to this concert.

Tom Littler was there checking on this preview. He said he has planned a good programme for the next year at Jermyn St though of course he is off to Richmond.

I'm sure the usual suspects will be writing the RSC's obituary whoever is announced as AD. And I’m sure the usual suspects will be saying “Let’s give her a chance” when it’s Whyman, who has been there nine years already. There are plenty of people who could rescue the RSC even amongst the quite short list of people who might be interested - Goold, Godwin, Warner, Church, Littler. But it’s not going to be any of them is it ? All’s Well has been running for a while now yet no one here seems to have seen it yet. That’s how irrelevant they’ve become. Seeing it end of Sept. Couldn’t get there earlier. 😁

Feels a little too soon to me for the National to be doing Othello AGAIN - it wasn't that long since Adrian Lester/Rory Kinnear...do we really need another one? Apparently we do. The Lester/Kinnear/Hytner job was the best Othello I’ve ever seen ( yes I did see the ones you are about to mention, Jan et al) so not sure I can face another one unless you guys all tell me I must. As for the name of the play 1. I’m convinced Sh didn't care despite the many Phds on the subject of his titles but 2. If it matters, then yes, Othello is the subject of the play, as are King Lear, Hamlet and Antony and Cleopatra in those plays. The merchant in The Merchant of Venice could well be Shylock or Antonio as other academic tomes have no doubt debated. This prod is in the Lyttleton so pro arch stuff. More like a movie? Easier to film for cinema release? Dunno.

September is the latest thinking. Hear a few front runners pulled out but that’s rumour mill…..Goold,Godwin etc…….don’t really know. I still guess Whyman and therefore goodbye RSC Shows this summer very bland….nothing awful,nothing great,very simply OK,……no real reason to travel to see them. Next year hear repertoire will be dropped for straight runs…… Ah well Straight runs make it even less attractive to go to Stratford. Curious we get these “Goold pulled out“ rumours just like last time - setting us up for the same conclusion that the internal candidate was the only serious one left. Stratford a good option if they run three different shows in all three of the theatres, say over a weekend, Friday, and two on Saturday. The straight runs might be better for actors and attract , dare I say it, bigger names. They can commit for the time and then toddle off.

Strictly Come Dancing in the UK Dancing With The Stars in the US and Australia and (I believe) other parts of the world. I'm just curious, as all others are based upon the UK concept, does anyone know the name has changed? I assume because not all territories showed Come Dancing on which our title is based, so when it was exported they came up with the more generic Dancing With The Stars to reduce confusion. Who remembers the original show? The best bit for me was the formation dancing - they should bring that back.

I really do not understand why people think this is a wonderful play , unless I have read things wrongly. It was fine, some witty writing sub Ayckbourn, sub James Graham but overall it was a mush mush of every idea you could stuff in - gay marriage, ethnic adoption, alcoholism, loneliness, wrecking of local economies….etc etc… I would love to see this writer’s sixth play. It will be terse and to the point. Jennings carried it and I can’t see it entering the repertoire with less charismatic actors. The ending was contrived - we can’t get the coffin thru the traffic as if the police would not have cleared the way hours before for this huge event - to get the dead girl on the stage. Recently there has been a case of the vicar forbidding ‘Dad ‘ on a gravestone to be overruled by his bishop/archdeacon/whoever. This is how it works. Here the superior person hadn’t ruled. He wanted the vicar out. Tribunal case pending eh? This lack of actual realism became an obstacle for me.

I knew I should have applied I have directed: Merry Wives Richard III As You Like It King Lear Henry IV (cut into 1 play) Much Ado Twelfth Night Love's Labour's Lost Sadly no Marlowe. But 1 Jonson (Volpone) I am still short of having seen all the Shakespeare plays. Timon, Henry VIII and Two Noble Kinsmen have eluded me. I have seen them all, most of them, too many times to count up. So I am qualified. Remind me what the job is ..

Looking forward to this. Hope SRB will play this straight, he sometimes gets a laugh with a look or a gesture which is great when appropriate but I think it would be hard, and kind of pointless, to get a laugh out of this grimmest of Ibsen plays. I think I saw the Paul Scofield/Eileen Atkins production but I have little recollection of it, need to sift through programmes. Finding it difficult to remember everything I've seen now. SRB. That's the problem. I don't think he can play entirely unsympathetic characters, or at least his audience won't let him - he got laughs as Leontes. I saw the Paul Scofield/Eileen Atkins/Vanessa Redgrave one a couple of times - Michael Bryant was also really great as Foldal. Also good was the Donmar Michael Grandage production with Iain McDiarmid/Deborah Findlay/Penelope Wilton. Funny how Shakespeare gives his villains the connection with the audience, the ‘laughs’ as with Iago for example. Leontes is laughable. But that aside….SRB is a fine actor and I am expecting a fine performance.

It is a kid friendly, tourist friendly show. Funny in all the right places. I think they ditched the Dogberry stuff, replaced the word humour with slapstick. Kinda worked.

A lot of stuff mentioned here that I have seen ( including the Brook Dream ) and would be interested in some revivals but on the whole I am for moving on. Although not fan of the ‘relevant’ production as this is so often a director’s bee in a bonnet and they don’t let the play or actors do their job, I have enjoyed the sensibilities of new productions recently. Looking back I think that having the likes of a young Judi Dench in a cast will heighten a show and make it memorable. Please nothing directed by Maria Aberg. No sticks, no balloons. Thank you.

I think we shouldn’t dismiss the educational work that the RSC does. The exam system has managed to diminish Shakespeare who is hanging on with his fingernails. I am not familiar with any outreach work that the NT has been doing give or take a pandemic of course. But I never see kids at the NT whereas you can always see them at the RSC ( sometimes they are American …) But I do agree with oxfordsimon that if it is good, they will come. Word of mouth is powerful, we all know that. The RSC has been slow out of the gates post covid and may have problems getting the creatives out of London but this may improve next year. Whoever is appointed I hope with give him/her/them a decent chance before we start sniping.

The ballon was one ordinary balloon that R picks up and squeezes and pops. Frankly a bit naff. I’ll post here because there isn’t a separate RIII thread as far as I can see. A good, thorough production, nothing weird. I felt it was rushed at times, particularly the scene where R fakes it in front of the citizens. I’ve seem this done much better. The queens stole the show, Anne, Margaret and Elizabeth, all very much the engines I thought. The lords nicely differentiated. RIII himself very competent, young, obviously pathological. Missed the deep rooted evil perhaps, the hiss boo villain which comes with an electric contact with the audience. The ghosts at the end very well done. A huge cenotaph was the scene set, music with individual choirboys, lighting giving us all the atmosphere…very long first half, two hours, and an hour for the second half.
( all costumed in its time but irritating use of video at the end for the king and Richmond’s speeches to the soldiers, a waste of time. )

Yes, very sorry for getting the name wrong and also pundits and thanks for the response. Looking at followers, yes I suppose it matters these days. Of course I know she has the ear piece going on. But I still think she does a good job with knowledge and enthusiasm. As for your last little hint..well. I’m not in the business at all so have no idea. But I would avoid that kind of comment both here and in the wider world.

I wonder if GL could actually do what Gaby Roslin ( spelling?) did last night which is control and organise three punters on the spot ad the other stuff and know her stuff and be enthusiastic all at the same time? Or Clare Balding for that matter;she is a brilliant sports presenter. Yes, bitter and twisted here but he must know where the bodies are buried.
