Sunday 17th July - Cynthia Erivo sings the songs of Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight.
That appears to be it for MT performances / performers this year.
No semi staged musical or John Wilson orchestra etc.

I think usually the annual Proms thread goes in General, because it's not particularly Musical Theatre focused.
Looking forward to the full calendar announcement in a week's time, but from teases I've read I'll be tuned into the Aretha Franklin & Vaughan Williams Proms for sure.

I haven't been able to find the listings. All I have found is that it being announced next Tuesday From an earlier press release on the Radio 3 website describing features in the Proms Guide released next week: Anniversary features on Vaughan Williams, Iannis Xenakis and George Walker Thought-provoking opinion pieces about audiences, music and music-making A sideways look at opera by comedian and opera fanatic Chris Addison A profile of the legendary ‘Queen of Soul’ and civil rights activist Aretha Franklin I'm taking those magazine features as an indication of Proms content we'll likely see.

The Franklin one sounds great. Plus I'm really hoping for sondheim one - gig or semi staged musical I'd be very happy with

Interesting programme of events this year. Jules Buckley arranging & conducting the Aretha Franklin Prom will be jem. Only fair that Opera gets a look in as well at times - and boy does it this year - so it makes sense for no Musical Theatre inclusion this year. You can a little taste with Bernstein's West Side Story Symphonic Dances - which is a lovely suite - in September.
To bore you all, this is what Im looking forward to tuning into: Prom 2: John Wilson conducts the Sinfonia of London (Huw Watkin's Flute Concerto is a veritable treat!) Prom 4: Cynthia Erivo – Legendary Voices Prom 6: Vaughan Williams and Tippett – Full Fourths Prom 16: Sea Sketches with Andrew Manze and BBC NOW Prom 19a: Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra Prom 33: Holst’s The Planets (childhood memories of seeing this, always a soft spot for it) Prom 34: Thorvaldsdottir, Elgar and Sibelius (Love a Cello concerto) Prom 47: Aretha Franklin – Queen of Soul Prom 56: The South African Jazz Songbook (Anything with Metropole Orkest is a certified yes in my books) Prom 63: Marius Neset and the London Sinfonietta Prom 68: Relaxed Prom – Bernstein, Britten and Wynton Marsalis

The excitement in our house - as in many houses with young people in them, no doubt - is for Prom 21 The Gaming Prom - From 8 Bit To Infinity. There is definitely a young generation for whom Games Music is as Film Music was for those of us of an older generation. Going to some London Symphony Orchestra concerts where they played, among other things, Legend of Zelda was a complete eye opener. I expect the audience for this prom will be lively, the LSO concerts had a fair amount of people in cosplay.

The Earth Prom will be a hit too.

Been through the programme twice now and nothing has grabbed me, it all seems very trad and safe. Not even any exciting late shows hiding away.

I'd booked for the 8 Bit to Infinity, games scores tend to overlooked but the likes of Zelda and Mario have wonderful scores.

Just back from seeing Simon Rattle conduct the LSO in Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins at the Barbican. As a bonus Andrew Staples sung Lonely House from Street Scene. I know Opera North did Street Scene a couple of years ago but a Weill prom would be lovely - even if it has been done before. Incidentally the LSO Half Six Fix performances are really good - an early evening, hour long concert. And the ten pound wildcard tickets are very good value. I've always ended up in very good seats with them.

Totally agree. There is no Musical Theatre at all - and I would argue that more people go to musicals in a year than to classical concerts. Also there is one chamber choir concert and only a small number of choral works. it’s like they aren’t interested in human voices at all. you would hope, given that it is part funded by the licence fee, they would try to reflect a little of what is popular with the public too. Musical theatre is served really badly by the BBC - we get Elaine Paige once a week…. I have loved all of the Music Theatre concerts and stagings - I even loved the Michael Ball prom! They could have given us one prom….

That is rather unfair. I haven't memorised the new season but there are at least three operas which absolutely celebrate the human voice
Dido and Aeneas, Il tabarro and The Wreckers
The BBC still has Anything Goes on iPlayer from Christmas and showed The Gondoliers just over 10 days ago. Not contemporary MT but nonetheless.
They also showed two big musicals concerts throw the pandemic.
It might not be much but it is not nothing.
The Proms are doing other things this year like music from games which gets even less coverage on the media

I remember at the time it was the fastest selling prom concert of all time but there was quite a bit of opposition from some quarters saying the Proms had been dumbed down by allowing "popular music".

The Proms is classical music first. I do like the musicals but it’s always been a tiny part of that season and TBH it’s good they’re actually trying new things this year like the Games Proms.

The programme for 21, the games Prom, looks like a massive missed opportunity unless they're going to add to it. I was tempted at first glance but it's a bit meh. At the very least, acknowledge Tetris. Or some of the classic stuff from Sega, Nintendo, Williams etc.

I agree it is about classical music but the great thing about concerts like The John Wilson Orchestra ones show that film music and classic musicals overlap with more traditionally defined classical music and are given a status they deserve. I know the Proms try to do innovative programming and I am all in favour of that, but the fact that there isn’t even a ‘tiny’ part that is MT is really disappointing.

There is still a John Wilson prom. It just happens that his current focus is on orchestral music. He shouldn't be expected to do a musicals concert every year. He is still a great advocate for the music that interests him.
