The success of My Fair Lady at the Coliseum might give us a clue about the future of this huge theatre - imports and big ‘uns at that. It is a lovely theatre in many way, lux foyers and impressive interiors but very little modern stuff is suitable. It is really a musicals venue, an opera venue. Would be nice to see opera from other nations and big classy musical productions…

I’m the only living being that hated the James plays. Sub mock Bard and tedious; one dramatic scene with the bath.

Apparently there is an arsenal online forum of 100,000 who are voting for Tony every week and he is topping the public vote.In some ways it was always a popularity contest as all of these reality / talent shows are. I did warn everyone about this! Us Arsenal fans go crazy when there’s a vote involved. I haven’t supported the campaign though, I haven’t even voted this year yet. So as they keep saying, this is what Strictly is about?

Why do they undermark Fleur - interesting comment from Motsi about powerful women, eh?

It's not a good enough play to pay top prices, especially because doing the play with 3 actors and a tedious amount of doubling (and then compounding that irritation by unveiling 7 more actors in the last scene) means I can't imagine it playing to cheap(er) seats at the back of the theatre. Typical example of a minor writer trying to write a major play about momentous events and falling short because they are a minor writer. There's no more real depth to this than in Cabaret and at least there you get a proper West End show for your money. Disagree. A different kind of thing to Cabaret which is brilliant of course. This is a straight old fashioned play packed with difficult material, perhaps too much, the euthanasia programme and the Jewish genocide being both so huge. It is well written though to be honest I would have crossed out a few lines, especially at the very end and perhaps omitted the major and wife thing completely. But then that might have made the play too short for the West End . To be honest this should have been at The National. What on earth is the National for? Then the prices would have been more reasonable and more younger people, teenagers ( for whom the language is not too extreme) would see it and debate it. ) The doubling/tripling of the parts was slightly confusing though well done because they could have made the Levey do the major and it might have had more clout but I do not know what it says in the script. Little things like this I noticed but on the whole it packs a punch and should be seen. David Tennant must have found this hard to do. The costuming alone would have made most people vomit so well done to him. Just to add, I hate having to queue outside the theatre to get in and they wanted to put a sticker on phones to prevent the taking of photographs. I refused of course. What an insult to think I would stand up and take a photo of David Tennant. I did see why they do this at the end, see above comment on costuming but even then it was silly. The audience was silent all thu, not a cough, not a rustle from beginning to end.

Let’s see if Birmingham can cope with this. I enjoyed it , if it is the same RSC prod I saw, but it hits hard on the stereotype button at times. Hope we don’t get any smashed windows or shouting crowds for this one.
ps I can’t recall precisely the hijab chat I referred to above but in the light of what is going on in Iran, I hope they check it carefully…

I was wondering about how much Victoria Wood resonated with the ‘young’ who watch and vote. And frankly I felt the whole tribute idea lacked verve. The only music I felt was worth dancing to was Line of Duty and it showed as they did a very good modern tango to it. Molly’s dance was a mess, she scraped through cos she could move her feet in a ‘technical’ way. I dread the Halloween rubbish they turn out with the inevitable elimination of the worst and most ridiculous costume. Something like 75% of the Strictly audience is over 45 so I doubt those who don't remember Victoria Wood at her peak are that influential. Probably more likely a pretty poor dance and Jayde having no real fanbase. Will's Line of Duty dance was a Viennese Waltz rather than a Tango. Yes of course, a Viennese waltz, my bad. But it was good!

I was pondering the stage configurations of The Bridge, am I right in thinking it's either the full thrust or the somewhat inaccurate immersive option? In my mind I have thought it more flexible, perhaps like the Young Vic or NT Dorfman, but I'm not sure it is. I'm not even sure they can unthrust, to use a technical term - perhaps the Stalls sideways seats are either in or out. Not entirely sure what point I'm trying to make. There was something in the back of my mind about occupying the stage acreage and that .. creating dissonance or separation (or something)? .. from events (stage area also goes way back, almost to SE17, almost). Or maybe I'm thinking of the shape forcing choices - The Southbury Child and the absurdly-sized table, or Back and Son, again, with unused acreage. Am I just waffling nonsense on a Sunday evening? Is there a director in the house? Yes I was wondering if they could convert it to a proscenium configuration too. I don’t know. The Young Vic is by far the most flexible space, or at least they’ve used it that way. I’ve seen all possible configurations there: in the round, thrust stage, promenade, proscenium, traverse, and several unique combinations of those. The Bridge is very flexible. Did you seen the walkabout productions? Or the Maggie Smith piece?

Lots of empty seats which surprised me asSRB is usually a sure fire draw. I liked this, it was short enough just to avoid tedium, it was superbly acted. I disagree with joem above. I think SRB was very convincing as a failed man, 13 years into that failure. It is hard not to see Ibsen bashing us over the head with his messages about life and art but with his oeuvre I think he is justified here.

Matt did have a physical problem which may have impacted on his movement. He has Poland Syndrome , which affects the body's musculature. Why wasn’t this mentioned? Everyone else mentions their problems and rightly so, highlights stuff for other people etc.

Janet McTeer is always good although I admit the only things I've seen her in was Les Liasons Dangereuses at the Donmar. She was hampered by her co star not knowing his words.

Quite a lot of background noise from republicans who want an elected head of state. They haven’t really thought it through because it would be either Jeremy Corbyn or Boris Johnson and each of those would be unacceptable to 50% of voters. Are there any countries where the head of state is elected by popular vote ? Apart from USA obviously which isn’t a positive example. France I suppose. I think your 50% is about 20% light. Still, must be worth a shout we could have had David Attenborough as our head of state for the last forty years. To be followed by Stephen Fry I think you can have an elected head of state who isn't the Prime Minister. Different system. But why bother? You’d still have to provide housing and a bit of pomp. Might as well keep with what we’ve got. Personally I think that the best thing they could do for their children, Will and Kate that is, is pull back a lot, lose the houses, the clothes allowance and the deference. Let little George breathe.

Get yourself on the Olivier judging panel. Do they still recruit about this time of the year? Free theatre, ( with a plus 1) best seats and a proggie for a year to everything in either plays or musicals sections. If you see loads of theatre and are prepared to enter the selection then have a go. It might be different now to when I did it but it must still be the best bargain for a theatre lover.

I knew Matt would be in the bottom 2, I just don't see people connecting with him, he's very odd. If one other judge voted to save Kaye then Shirley's vote would have saved her and Matt would be gone. I thought they were gonna get rid of him tbh. I think it is a shame that Kaye was eliminated. I thought her dance was better than the dustbin man and that both Will and Matt relied on certain ‘equipment’ more than their dance skills. I was pleased that Shirley said she would have saved her. I’m wondering if the judges get any chance to confer. Just a nod or anything? That the head judge should think so differently is a little disturbing. If they had known Shirley was going to save Kaye would one of the others also saved her? We’ll never know.

Who doesn’t like the Bridge? Great staff! Plenty of loos and some on ground floor. On a recent visit we sat outside the theatre 9cos there were seats) for a bit before going to eat somewhere else. On our return to the theatre to go in we were accosted by a security guy who had seen us when were sitting down ( from inside ) and saw that we had dropped a travel card which he duly returned. Talk about observant.

Well, everyone seems pretty chuffed with no groans of disappointment so bodes well for RSC. The new guys wont really get going for a bit ( what I mean is we wont see the product for a while) but I do hope they are full of ideas and champion our Willie as never before.
