Probably not, but then that's only going to be about 52 adults and a goat. OK, maybe my OH and I can get together with the other 50 adults then and go see something else (we'll leave the goat behind) Rainy Bank Holiday tomorrow... perfect opportunity to catch up. It's a pretty good film.

Is anybody booked in to see this anytime next week or before the 17/05? I am trying to finalise my theatre weekend and this is one I am considering as I have never seen it and also it’s an opportunity to visit a different venue I have never been to before. I would love to read if it is worth a worth or to stay clear of. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. I’m waiting for reviews. Vicki Pepperdine seems to have left the cast which is not necessarily a good sign. Personal circumstances, it was announced a couple of weeks ago that she'd been replaced by Martha Howe-Douglas.

Orpheus Descending is by Eugene O'Neill. Don't think it is? Of course, apologies! For some reason, I always mix 'Orpheus Descending' up with 'Mourning Becomes Electra' (O'Neill). I lay the blame with Helen Mirren for appearing in both in the early 00's.

Didn't book for this as previous experience of TW plays made me swear "never again"; I couldn't even sit through the whole of the last one I attempted to see, which I think was (Orpheus Descending?) at the Menier. But the reviews for this are so good that I'm wondering whether a quality production would win me over, or whether it's really the plays themselves which are simply never going to be for me. They all seem to have in common an assortment of characters whose lives are disappointing or disastrous and who spend several hours wringing their hands over their unavoidable fate without anything ever happening. No-one else can answer my question for me unless there happens to be someone who felt the same but was then converted by this production. Orpheus Descending is by Eugene O'Neill.

Donna Air? Wow. Blast from the past. Don’t think I’ve seen her in anything since Byker Grove. You DIDN'T see 'The Mummy Returns'?

Joe McFadden and Donna Air will be in the Gielgud cast. We are halfway towards my prediction towards a cast being made up solely of Strictly winners!

This was published in September 2023 - David Haig to write new play Magic for the Bridge Theatre Award-winning actor and writer David Haig (Minority Report, My Boy Jack) is working on a brand new play for Nicholas Hytner at the Bridge Theatre. Titled Magic, the play is a new commission for the Bridge Theatre in London, and is about the relationship between Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Oh good, something different.

Post Guys & Dolls, Bridge Theatre are planning Magic by David Haig (possibly directed by Hytner). It's listed as a commission in Haig's bio inside the Minority Report programme. Do we think this could be an adaptation of the 1978 film of the same name?

I don't know if this has been discussed on this site before, but I heard that apparently there were plans for a revival of 'The Producers', which would have starred James Corden of all people. You can probably imagine who he would've played. It was almost about to go ahead, but Corden backed out just before it could become official, citing the reason being that he thought it would be a big risk for him to appear in a musical when, and I quote, "half the world hates him". Now I got this from a second hand account, so I don't know how much of this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me if Corden did at least consider doing a musical, before backing out and deciding to do a play instead. I can't help but feel a little bad for him if his decision to back out was because of how disliked he is, and I'm someone who isn't a fan of his either! Ironically though, Corden does kind suit the role of Max Bialystock, if you think about it. The aborted Producers was discussed on here a while back, I think it was when Frozen first announced it's closing and we were speculating what might next go into Drury Lane.

Stacey won Strictly and danced on that tour so her performing background is slightly there but no acting credits I'm aware of. Cheryl was likewise. Lily Allen had done bits of acting and is from an acting family. Laura Whitmore had done the one Peter James play. Giovanna had done some acting training and been in a couple of stage roles despite being best known on here as CHF's sister in law. What will we get next Alison Hammond in a gender neutal casting of Othello. Hugh Edwards, Philip Schofield and Matt Hancock in Art? Seann Walsh is in the new tour of 'Art' so you're not so far off in suggesting a dream cast of secretive wick-dippers!

It is depressing when theatres have to constantly rely on stuff like Heathers and 2:22 for a filler. Nothing from Bath, Chichester or other regions? In terms of costs and marketing, it’s not worth it to transfer anything for is a fairly short run. It’s either that or theatres are dark and no one wants dark theatres It would be lovely if the theatre industry had the capacity to surprise us in such an unexpected way like the music industry does (I'm riding high on my Swiftie-cloud today)... Following all the rave reviews last night, we suddenly discover that the RSC 'Love's Labours Lost' is going to the Gielgud for 10 weeks, straight from Stratford. We'd all fall off our perches in surprise!

I may be wrong, but I had never heard of this book probably because ballet was not a part of growing up for me. There will be those who do have fond memories of it but it probably doesn't have universal appeal. I'd never heard of it until the BBC did an adaptation back in 2007, with Emma Watson as one of the girls.

Do we think this show will be a tough ticket? There are loads available at CFT. Treat yourself to somewhere with less smog!

I wonder how long it's been in the works for.
I know we now live in the age where ticket sales are enough to justify a Broadway transfer but it being such a straight shot for the West End, hopefully it's something special. I expect it was being planned back when Daniel Evans was in charge. He'd also programmed it when in Sheffield (Xmas 2013; Tom Edden as Fagin, replacing an indisposed Phil Davis).

I think it's a shame that it's transfer has been announced so early, it takes the shine off it being a success for Chichester in the first instance.
The Half a Sixpence WE transfer wasn't announced until after it had finished at CFT.

It was suggested that My Neighbour Totoro had Gillian Lynne from early 2025.

Heathers I can't imagine both Drury Lane and the Gillian Lynne being closed over the winter... A theatre with that number of seats needs something to command some great ticket sales, and speculating about what could be coming that could command as much as Frozen is a wild guessing game... Whatever is gonna be announced in the near future could be a bombshell for sure. The autumn/winter season in a grand old theatre is always great for something spooky... Beetlejuice, then?

Cast looks great, bet Carrie HF is fuming not to be Nancy Can’t we celebrate the casting without dragging down other actors? They're not dragging down an 'actor'.

It's probably about Oliver! going to be the Gielgud as Martin Guerre he's not involved with. I wonder if a return season of Old Friends might also be a possibility? Would he really announce Oliver before if it's started the Chichester run?

Freema seems too much a big name for the nurse role? If this were 2009, I'd agree with you.

Do you actually get to see some willy in the finale? At the world-premiere, in Sheffield, the overwhelmingly female audience got rather more than a quick view. Image in spoilers for those of a nervous disposition. Were you in said audience? I'd be slightly cynical and suggest that some modesty pouches may have been used in shooting of that promo shot, taken from behind.

Can I ask an appallingly vulgar question about this play?
Do you actually get to see some willy in the finale?
I'd assumed we would - hats away, quick flash, lights out but it must be a nightmare trying to police people with phones...

Worth pointing out that this is summer 2025! Exciting news, though. The announcement could be for 2035 and I’d still be super excited. I could argue Bath might now be a more exciting regional theatre than Chichester Steady on, dear.

Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker. That was fabulous. A quick search of my emails reveals I only paid £10 for a Monday night ticket as well! Cos it was a Royal Court production I assume.

There was zero atmosphere and it wasn't well served being in a typical proscenium arch West End theatre - if the audience had surrounded the action and we'd been in a less traditional space that would have helped a bit for me. This is a good shout - if it had been staged in a non-traditional theatre space I think everything would have worked so much better. You've just reminded me of the time I watched a play starring Toby Jones and Imelda Staunton in a community centre in Haggerston! Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker. That was fabulous.
