from my point of view, most broadway and west plays and musicals still dont appeal. Even if they were cheaper i doubt i would be partaking. Im much happier on the fringe or watching something arty!

Some of us might have seen Adrian Dunbar in the musical Lady in the Dark with Maria Friedman at the National Theatre in 1997... presuming it's the same person! I can't recall how much he sang in that - will have to dig the cast recording out later. I forgot AD was in that, the cast recording is stunning and I'll have listen later on. Im guessing the older man casting will be a metaphor for dated sexist attitudes ?

3* from Arifa in the Guardian, who seems to have been the only critic who liked it within reason. Her reviews startle me

I really liked Penelope but the play itself was to me forgettable fluff.

Wow.what a night. Loved it. My Mum said it was the best thing she has ever seen.
Standing ovations aplenty. Bows for the technical crew
Also, full praise to the disability access ushers, who really supported Mum (and her crutches) without us even having to ask.

I'm hoping someone will pick up the new Sondheim, Here We Are. Wouldn't that be a great way for Tim Sheader to start his Donmar stint? Or for Michael Longhurst to end his? Mendes started his Donmar reign with the European premiere of Assassins, so HWA would be good follow-up for Sheader. He is a director with an imagination and I'd love to see what he would do with it

Ive always loved PO. i find its score beautifully hynoptic, yup the book is slow but also mightily ambitious. I like the 2017 changes as it really does focus you on the binary views of the protagonists. The programme essay by Weidman is well worth reading. At the MCF from the middle of row C you miss most of the projections and if a character sits or kneels then forget it. Didnt they think to raise the stage? A small proportion of the cast have poor diction. The mix of the band is poor / muddled, i would of like to picked out individual instruments. The direction is not particularly focussed or inspiring. The set is glossy but nothing more. Tree and Pretty Lady stood out as highlights. Im going back next month and im sitting on the front row hopefully I'll be able to see it all and enjoy it more. I went back last night with low expectations and enjoyed it a lot more, noticing and appreciting things i missed before. Sitting on the front row on the ' audience entry side' we were to see and hear everything perfectly. The orchestrations sound truly gorgeous. I enjoyed it. *sorry for quoting myself but thought it was a good way to balance my previously negative post*

British irony doesn't always come across well online. I think you’re right @talkpaul. I didn’t think steve10086 was being ironic. According to Wikipedia ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_National_Day) England doesn’t have an official national day. Do English people find it funny that Americans get so patriotic about July 4th? I dont find it funny but i do find it funny that some Brits go crazy for the royal family. At least the 4th July is deemed for everybody and not just some privileged folk in royal palaces.

The last 45+ mins of Here we are has no singing Did it bother you that it had no singing for 45 minutes at the end or at least did it seem like something was missing? I would of preferred it to be sung, as I loved the score until it stopped singing. Some of the spoken moments really cry out for a Move On type song. Also, the book gets a bit repetitive so I struggled to love it overall.

Hurrah. I loved this at Southwark.
What with this (assuming it happens) and Starlight it's going to be a good year for injuries!

As folk are mentioning their Neggie Nellies, here is mine
Turkey Aspects of love
Disapointing & dont get the hype Orlando - too short Cabaret
Snoozefest Ghandi and the Assassin
Walked at the interval Threepenny Opera - Cockpit theatre - perhaps it was the production or maybe just just my dislike for Brecht.

What other anniversaries and expiry of copyrights are imminent ? It used to be more common to mark them than it is now - as I remarked elsewhere the 400th anniversary of Moliere’s birth went largely unmarked in 2022. At one time the NT might have marked the Austen anniversary in some way but one assumes they will deliberately ignore it this time - as noted above these occasions are potential money spinners for regional theatres. The last Sherlock Holmes stories had their copyright expire at the start of the year in the US — I believe that means that they're public domain everywhere now, if that counts? For anyone who is interested, the Watermill Theatre are staging a new musical, Sherlock Holmes and the poison wood early next year. The cast recording is already out.

Doubt there will be offers as its sold well. Not sure about dates at the end of the run though. I checked recently for February. Not selling greatly. I am waiting for the discounts to arrive. I saw the production at Donmar. Not sure if anyone has seen both and can compare? Sorry if someone already has commented on this, I haven't seen it. I have seen both and I think the Donmar version was far stronger due it its inventive staging and direction
