Probably a good idea if we stopped thinking the worst and went back to minding our own business. As recently as February 2020, Londoners, in particular, were notorious for minding their own business.

The Marks & Spencer foodhall is not my natural habit, david, but I have subsequently found them in there, if that helps in the future. They're ยฃ3, mind, for a smaller punnet than the ones Tracey sells. And you almost certainly won't get a "cheers me bab-ee" in M&S! ๐

Absolutely the right decision, Forrest. I can't believe I missed mushy peas off my list. Mushy peas and mint sauce, in the market, is a must!

Blimey, this band must be quite something! Take the hit and change your plans, Forrest. Deep down, you know you want to. It's what Mark would want too. ๐ If you use code AUTUMN15, it may offset some of the extra cost. Otherwise there's Nottingham Castle, and Nottingham Contemporary, and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, and the River Trent, and the canal...

Shakespeare without Shakespeare's words is the only kind of Shakespeare worth watching! And Prokofiev did write some lovely tunes. ๐
(Though knowing some of Shakespeare's words did come in handy for Birmingham on Monday night's University Challenge.)

If Sir Alan came round mine for dinner, as one of my four guests, I'd ask him, after a few glasses of wine, if it rankles that the SJT's biggest commercial hit is The Woman in Black, rather than one of his own plays. I'm sure he'd say "no". ๐ก
Fun fact: The entire Fortune Theatre - backstage, auditorium, grotty toilets, everything - would fit on the stage of the Theatre Royal over the road. (This was told to me by one of the Drury Lane tour guides, so may or may not be true.)

Good news, BurlyBeaR. Kiwi berries are back in season, so I've bought you a punnet from Tracey's. Only ยฃ1.20 to you, plus p&p. For once, you'll be the talk of MCR for all the right reasons! ๐

Best to do your rumba when you're one of 14, rather than one of three.
If AJ and Kai aren't married by the final, I'll eat my flat cap.
John and Johannes could well be lifting the glitter ball trophy in December.
Anton's switch to judging has been seamless. Does anyone really miss Bruno?
Ben Platt is the special guest on tonight's results show. He must have flown in specially, just for a three minute slot!

Today, on my tour of towns and cities beginning with H, I'm in...Leeds. ๐
The 35 mile journey, on a 30 year old train, *only* took 1 hour 18 minutes. The return is scheduled to be a full 10 minutes faster, being downhill. I might even be home in time to catch the last couple on Strictly.
So many stags and hens about. I wish I'd brought my cape!

Except in the original Variety article, which is several times longer than The Guardian reprint, he does lambast the casting of Gerard Butler. "The Phantom was too young, and the whole point of the Phantom is he needs to be quite a bit older than Christine." He's also "not a huge fan" of the 1973 adaptation of JCS. Variety article

For a while, the SJT brought forward its Thursday night show to 7pm, so it was possible to cross the road and catch the last train back to York (and maybe Leeds, too?). So having done that, it also had to bring the matinee forward. Now the evening show has returned to 7.30pm, but the matinee remains with a 1.30 start, which always feels slightly too early.
Out on the road, it's not uncommon for the week to start on Tuesday night, with matinees on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, which I think I would prefer were I talented enough to be a thespian. More time at home and less time to mope in digs!

There has been a change in management at the New Theatre, from local authority with a 500k annual subsidy, to HQ/Trafalgar. If they don't get the big shows they won't be able to pay the rent, let alone make a profit.

Unless I spent Thursday morning photographing the wrong building, I'm reasonably certain this is the home of the new Hytner and Starr theatre at King's Cross. The offices were going to be occupied by Facebook...but that was before you know what changed everything! In the same way that its older sibling is the Bridge Theatre, I wonder if this will be the Cross Theatre?

Died within 28 days of a positive test, which is rather different to dying of Covid. Plus we don't routinely test for flu in the UK. If we did, and used the same metric, the figure of 30,000 would be many times higher.
I'm content to be a "they" and have eyes rolled at me. I certainly won't be campaigning for anyone to loose their livelihood.

That's quite a patch you're now covering, BurlyBeaR. ๐ AUTUMN15 will get you a 15% discount at Nottingham...though not on the very cheapest seats.

I've just swung by The Lane ahead of today's matinee. It's very kind of Andrew to close the road for me, but completely unnecessary. He obviously doesn't know I was in the Tutfy Club. ๐ฟ
If children under 3 aren't admitted, why is there a buggy park down the side, opposite the Fortune Theatre? Honestly, kids these days!
"Look Mummy, there's another Elsa." I suspect her poor mother will be hearing that quite a lot this afternoon.

They could always do what they do in Huddersfield. The adults only performance of an amateur panto has a start time of 9.30pm on a Friday. That should avoid any confusion, especially with an advertised end time of near enough midnight!
It's currently sold better than the 'regular' performance on either side, so there is clearly a demand locally, which suggests there is a demand nationally.

This is probably the time to remind ourselves that if everything had gone to plan, Camden hadn't dragged its heels, and the Victoria Palace hadn't gone horribly over budget, the Ambassadors would no longer exist in its current form.
I'm sure modern structural engineering could remove many pillars, or at least make them considerably slimmer. And if it's the plasterwork and gilding we're all so attached to, both are relatively easy to replicate.
London's theatres are only going to get older and more anachronistic, so something has to happen, otherwise they'll become a national embarrassment.

A couple of years ago, as part of the Fun Palaces weekend, I went on a ghost tour of Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre. As we were told supposedly true stories, sundry members of staff would appear dressed as the ghosts being described to us.
When we went backstage, into the band room I think it was, one of my fellow attendees suddenly froze and went into a trance-like state for a few minutes. "I'm very sensitive," she explained. "I definitely felt something."
The problem is, everything behind the proscenium was built only 30 years ago, so why would old ghosts move into a new home?
