My income has collapsed due to covid, but I'm back working in theatres in less than a week. If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem, and so you don't get treated the same as those who are actively working to bring back a normal existence. Gosh. Life is for living. You're 26. It's only for living if you aren't dead. Young people can die of Covid too, and none of us know what underlying health conditions we may have undiagnosed! Or how we might react in terms of long Covid, which could very much restrict living. Exactly. Someone I follow on Twitter got covid in March 2020 & is still suffering from long covid. She tweets things like she's exhausted just from walking down the road to her nearest shop. She's hardly going to be able to jump on a train to London when the theatres re-open. Personally I'm not afraid of dying of covid, I'm afraid of being ill for months/years. (I'm also absolutely petrified of giving it to my mother, but that's a separate issue.) |

I have tickets booked for a show at the end of June, which is for sale on a full-seating basis. Someone in the cast has told me to expect to have to produce a rapid test (LFT I assume) for that performance. No mention of mask-wearing, although I didn't ask him about that, thinking about the conversation. The producers are a fairly big musical theatre/ music touring name, so I'm guessing they are clued up on what will be expected. E.T.A This is anecdotage, thought it was worth sharing what we are hearing. Apologies for the self-quote. I was reading the guidance for audiences at the O2 for the Brit Awards on 11 May, which is part of the Events Research Programme. The audience need to have an LFT in the 36 hours before the even, plus a PCR test before and afterwards. The PCR is specifically to help the research process. Guidance on masks are that they are to be worn in communal areas only, not at your seat. Face coverings should be worn in all communal areas during the event including concourses unless you are exempt from wearing one. Face coverings can be removed safely when you’re in your seat or suite if you choose.www.theo2.co.uk/events/the-brits-2021-faqIs it reasonable to assume that after 21 June, this is the protocol that will apply? I'm very on board with that mask policy, if that's what it turns out to be. I never really had an issue with mask wearing to walk around the theatre it was just whilst sat/during the show I was a bit concerned about.

The Times on 3 May reported that social distancing in venues will be scrapped on 21 June but: The Times understands this means theatre and cinema audiences must wear face coverings during performances and there will be strict guidance on ventilation and staggered entry.So we'll have to wait and see what emerges. |

Well it's not unknown for newspaper reports to be wrong and if they are just going to decide that mask wearing is required during performances before the pilots where people don't have to wear them have even happened then what's the point in the pilots?! So let's hope that the pilot enables us to go mask free whilst sat in the auditoriums. Fingers crossed. |

Personally mask wearing doesn’t bother me although I can see it bothering others. What I do want to query is how test and trace will work post-June 21st? We know that the vaccines aren’t 100% effective and we’ll be looking towards end fo October for all to receive their second doses. Isn’t it a worry as well that it will only take one audience member who tests positive after a performance for an entire show to shut with cast/creatives all having to self isolate?

Probably not an audience member as cast will most likely be kept strictly separate from audience contact. A cast or crew member testing positive may be somewhat problematic though. However, in theory, if all are vaccinated then it shouldn't make a difference. Also we have rapid home testing now, which can potentially shorten isolation periods and detect exposures and infections more quickly, especially if cast and crew are being tested regularly. |

The idea going forward is to use testing to reduce the isolation times to just a few days rather than 2 weeks (if you test negative obviously!)

I've thought about this. On my show we are testing twice weekly, but as a sound engineer I am based in the audience. So if someone sits near the sound desk test positive, my contact tracing app will me to isolate. Guidelines for the stuff in December was if someone on a project tested positive you all self isolated for 48 hours, then got tested, then you could resume (happened to friends in both theatre and film), but I don't know where we are at with that now. The cast will be fine, but we may need bigger front of house teams/sound teams/people who are on the audience side of the proscenium to cover for this. |
