Not sure how it could work for the big two but The Dorfman could be altered due to its flexibility

The Olivier was once in the round and I think the circle was closed off. Maybe do something similar to make it work

Hope the reference to attending in social bubbles doesn't imply no space for solo theatregoers...

Hope the reference to attending in social bubbles doesn't imply no space for solo theatregoers... I think we have to cut the theatres some slack when it comes to them coming up with business plans to safely reopen. I’d rather they can get back on their feet first than no theatre at all. I would imagine those single seats in the Lyttelton will be very sought after if they do include single theatregoers in their plans

I would imagine those single seats in the Lyttelton will be very sought after if they do include single theatregoers in their plans Sure - I have been a top cheerleader for cutting theatres some slack and doing what it takes, but I'm also selfish enough to want to get back there myself! It's an odd phrase and probably doesn't mean what it seems to imply; I don't think most people go to the theatre in a group - it's usually in twos or maybe fours. I'd imagine solo theatregoing is more common than going as a pack. Trying to coordinate diaries with just one other person is bad enough, let along a group - it's the main reason why I started going to the theatre by myself to begin with. By the time I managed to agree a date with someone else, the tickets were usually gone...

Some charitable organisations have found that their public liability insurance has been changed to specify they have to exclude those aged 70 and over from attending events. I wonder if theatres will run into similar problems ?

Very likely. I know theatres are having to send their COVID risk assessments to their insurers before they start or re-start any activity.

Cam Mc says no re-opening until Easter at the earliest and four/five months of notice of no distancing opening being allowed is needed before performances can re-open.

Or, if you prefer a more positive take on it, he is aiming to reopen box offices in November with a view to shows returning by Easter.

Cam Mc says no re-opening until Easter at the earliest and four/five months of notice of no distancing opening being allowed is needed before performances can re-open. He's clearly talking about the big West End behemoths; smaller theatres can be a lot more agile, as we're already seeing. Theatre is not a single thing, certainly not in London.

Cineworld has reopened booking for Friday. Much less stringent measures than Odeon, though more details should be put up.

But he will only re - open them in November if he gets a promise that no distancing will be needed - that's not a certainty.

Dowden also announced more detail on the government’s £1.57bn cultural recovery fund, including the creation of a new board to help administer the programme and advise on the largest grants. It will be chaired by Sir Damon Buffini, a founding partner of the private equity fund Permira and the chair of the National Theatre. Money will be distributed by organisations such as Arts Council England, the British Film Institute and Historic England. They will publish much anticipated guidance and criteria for applicants on Wednesday. www.theguardian.com/film/2020/jul/28/uk-pledges-500m-insurance-fund-to-jumpstart-film-and-tv-production

I mentioned it in the Phantom thread that it's most likely 'closing' and being replaced by the recent UK touring production rather than leaving the West End altogether.

Very likely. I know theatres are having to send their COVID risk assessments to their insurers before they start or re-start any activity. It is an overlooked aspect. My feeling is that in practice insurance requirements will end up by being more restrictive than government guidance.

Hopefully they will just disregard this useless govt and get on with trying to put on indoor theatre in a way that's compatible with an ongoing health issue - eg like the Mousetrap is.
