It did seem that Achievement in Music was a duplicate of Best New Musical this time. If Six had won Achievement, it would have been a reflection of the overall success of taking their musical on such a journey.

So, is the Royal Albert Hall a proper venue for these awards? The show presentations were limited with no flys or set pieces - the stage looks like it's not proper for dancing (I was worried for the Swan Lake dancers!) - and even though there's a Royal Albert Hall award for Sound, the sound on the livestream had some issues. I don't know what it sounds like in the Royal Albert Hall.

The Olivier Awards do show the disconnect between a great show and harsh critics, the brilliant Come From Away was correctly recognised as best musical, however both Michael Billington and Dominic Cavendish who both gave this show a measly 3 Stars.
For the record Michael Billington gave the Olivier Award winning show 3 Stars and Dominic Cavendish gave the Olivier Award winning Kinky Boots 2 Stars.
All 3 shows were/are loved by theatre fans, as for me all 3 shows are 5 Star shows and all deserved their Olivier.

I don't know what it sounds like in the Royal Albert Hall. It's a very large and grand venue and i can see why they have it there but it fits so much better at the Royal Opera House. It's in the West End, it has better possibilities in staging and the location means the public can get involved via the events it used to hold in Covent Garden.

why is there no best musical? just new and revival The awards are given to productions that opened within the year as they define it. So ongoing shows and actors who take over roles aren't eligible. There used to be an Audience Award that rotated around the likes of Wicked, Phantom and Les Mis. It stopped a couple of years ago, possibly when they stopped having the outdoor stage in Covent Garden?

I honestly don't think a show should win just because it's homegrown. Broadway is miles ahead when it comes to new musicals and that's reflected in the acclaim and awards, when it comes to plays though, that where the British theatre scene does a lot better.

I'm watching the highlights now, that Lion King performance is terrible. Such a mess!

I knew Sharon would sneak in and steal that award, Rosalie and Adrienne were robbed however Sharon was brilliant in the show so you can't be too mad at it.
For me Sharon's performance was on a whole other level to Rosalie.

Lion King was awful but brilliant compared to Janie, Ruthie and the tuneless Jason Manford. The guy is abysmal.

Just watched the Come From Away performance and it hasn't changed my mind about not wanting to see it.
Looks very cheesy and hokey.

Wasn't it only 2 years ago ITV was showing the awards at prime time, not tucked away in this graveyard slot?...

Six clearly is a show that doesn't come across that well on TV. Because that performance really didn't show the show off well at all, especially following Rosalie's incredible performance.

Pleased Six decided to mix in the last bit of the title song to their performance - for me, it's the best song in the show.

Coz that made me want to see it, thought the girls were all amazing. I'm glad to hear that, I had a friend who was at the awards who said it was one of the best performances of the night, but watched it just now and was shocked at how flat they sounded on the TV. Some shows just don't have luck on TV, Jamie didn't come across well really the other year.
