I just read this again and it’s super interesting what he said about Ruthie Ann Miles being nominated for “The King And I” ... But it's not just that the best man, woman or show wins or doesn't necessarily win (always a subjective call in any case) but whether the best man, woman or show is even in the competition. There are always plenty of anomalies in who even gets recognised.
Take just one example: Ruthie Ann Miles was nominated for her supporting performance as Lady Thiang in The King and I. But in fact, owing to a personal tragedy in which her year-old daughter (and unborn child) were killed in a road accident and she was seriously injured, she missed the opening and critics did not review her, though many thought that she did, as there was no notification of the fact that Naoko Mori was in fact playing the role. Mori alternated with Miles to play a substantial part of the run; but Miles alone was nominated.
Do you think this really was a case of critics not knowing who they were reviewing or Ruthie Ann Miles’s tragedy influencing their vote, even if they didn’t even see her in the role? Uhm, sounds like Shenton's usual crap. All the major newspapers and critics rightly mentioned Naoko Mori in their reviews, and not performing at opening night has clearly never been an issue for the Oliviers: plenty of replacements have been nominated (Betty Buckley, Elaine Paige, Kyle Scatcliffe, Maria Friedman...) and won (eg: Joanna Riding, Alex Jennings).

Itv have scheduled 110 minutes of highlights on Sunday night. That is pretty wonderful! Looks great at first glance but 40minutes of that will be adverts. So thats more like 70 minutes, 30 of which will be Jason Manford crackin' northern jokes at London folks. IIRC they struggle to sell adverts for it (thus the late and reduced broadcast) so I feel 40 minutes will be reduced somewhat. I do wonder if ITV buy the rights to broadcast it though, or if it’s given to them free. I still feel like this is something the BBC should be broadcasting in full. I dare say even ITV should add the full version (and not just the highlights) onto the ITV Hub afterwards.

I just saw that the backstage stuff during the show is being presented by Youtuber Louise Pentland. Now, i really like her, she is not one of these glitzy fame hungry 'influencers' and actually has some achievements, however she knows nothing about Theatre as far as i can tell and you have to wonder if being good friends with a certain CHF has anything to do with it.
If they were going to go this way, there are so many theatre people from social media and you tube they could have chosen who not only would have known what they are talking about but it would have been a big break for them and a really special moment for them. It's a shame.

Maybe she has been chosen to attract the kind of people who don't know much about theatre either and otherwise wouldn't watch? If it gets new people watching and interested in theatre it has to be positive.

The difference is that most stagey youtubers have relatively small subscriber counts who are already passionate about theatre so will most likely be already watching. Louise has 2.4 million subscribers so there’s a bigger audience there for them to target.

Yeah, I can understand why they chose her to do it, even if it seems like a kick in the teeth to theatre bloggers. The show highlights are on itv and they want to appeal to casual theatre goers more than anything else. Like Shady and Stuart have said, this might get new people interested given her large following.

In 2016,the tv audience for the Oliviers was roughly 730,000,in 2017 it rose to about 1 million but last year dropped to about 600,000 so we are talking there about a niche audience. The BRITS this year had about 4.5 million viewers and that was down almost a million from 2018.Maybe it is all about the popularity of the types of shows being celebrated year on year or maybe people are bored of back-slapping self-congratulatory award ceremonies.

I have to imagine that the fact that the broadcast starts at 10:20pm rather than being shown live is a big part of the problem in terms of viewership

Also - do I need to avoid this thread/forum if I don't want to know who wins until it's shown on ITV?

I think a lot of members will be celebrating on the thread or sadly commiserating with each other,so I am going to avoid the site until tomorrow morning.May the best shows and creatives win and break a leg to you all!

The red carpet facebook live video started at 4 and all we’ve had so far is the Olivier Awards logo for 15 minutes!

I have to imagine that the fact that the broadcast starts at 10:20pm rather than being shown live is a big part of the problem in terms of viewership True but earlier is prime time and, therefore, prime advertising time and the advertisers rule the world. I'm just happy we can watch it at all, although I won't be saying that when I struggle to get up to work in the morning... I'll be turning off the Internet and watching on ITV "as live".

I've seen that they have a Youtuber, Louise something, interviewing them afterwards, instead of , you know, anybody who would know anything about the theatre. I can only imagine what a hot mess that will be, but OK.

Yes we all moan about CHF but at least she knows what's she talking about!
