I was at the Old Vic last night for Tim Minchin's one-night only show and he played three songs from Groundhog Day, one of which he roped in the actress playing the role to come down from her seat in the Dress Circle to sing it. I think she was Georgina Hagen. Anyway, all three songs were rather good, so I'm hoping I will enjoy this once it opens.

As a Minchin fan for 10+ years it was such a treat to see just him and his piano on stage.

Hearing incredible, and slightly ambitious things about the set. It uses multiple revolves apparently.
Also, the first preview has been cancelled. Previews start 15th July!

Is it just me, or is there a real spate of shows cancelling early previews this year? Perhaps more should go along the Cursed Child route - "this is the date of our first preview; we want to have some earlier ones, but we're not putting them onsale yet in case we'd need to cancel them", so it didn't make any difference to anyone when they quietly went "yeah, we're not having those earlier ones after all".

Interesting that the PwC previews are having tickets from the 15th until the 30th July (presumably not half at each performance, as that would be slightly OTT). Unfortunately I'm pretty booked up during that time so there's only one or two performances I could make! Will still give it a go next week though..

I wish they'd built extra time in for running everything properly. I booked for the 12th July as seeing Aladdin and joined it into one trip. Now will either have to fork out hotels and trains again or miss out.

Yup, I got an update on this. It dampens my plans. I was hoping to see the first preview as booked, and see the first preview of Bodyguard on the 15th (booked) and Ramin at the Palladium on the 16th (booked) and fly home on the 17th. I might just cancel it altogether and just see the final performance which I have tickets for at least.
I can understand a day or two delay but a full working week means they are running seriously behind schedule.

I'd booked inexpensive seats for a preview and then got the cancellation/postponement email today. Box Office was v. efficient, though. I emailed back with a couple of other dates I could do and they got back to me quickly with (I think) slightly better seats just a week later. But I live in London, so obviously less hassle for me than those of you who have arranged trips.

Cancelled previews are nothing new- I would always consider booking for the 1st preview to be somewhat of a risk.

Cancelled previews are nothing new- I would always consider booking for the 1st preview to be somewhat of a risk. Especially for musicals - as they tend to be more technically complex than plays. And seeing as this is effectively serving as the out of town tryout for Broadway, perhaps even more so! Still, I'm glad they've told us all six weeks in advance. It's a lot better than turning up on the day and seeing a cancelled performance sign!

I can remember a time when nearly every musical seemed to have a delayed opening. (It always made me think we were in for a big bit of set that might get stuck or something... This made me think I was in for a treat!)

I'm going to call box office tomorrow for a refund as can't really commit to definately getting to London on other days. If only hadn't booked Aladdin would have been able to move things around. Oh well the best laid plans ... Have booked to see Titanic the musical to replace it so not all lost haha. Note to self.... move nearer London!!!

It does amaze me that shows get delayed. How many production managers, stage managers are involved in shows these days......there is so much planning. I can understand if illness and such force a delay but surely every angle of set design and lighting has to be thought out in advance and planned. Yes these things happen, but I can't help thinking they should not be happening.

What on earth was Rudin expecting?! The Broadway production of Matilda is the transfer of the RSC and London version (with some logistic modification from thrust to pros. arch of course) so surely he would've expected the creatives to follow the same sort of pattern?
I wonder if this means the Old Vic new musicals commissioning programme that was announced last year is off also with Rudin and Sonia Friedman?
