I'm so ambivalent about this. On the one hand, just... no. Don't mess with Groundhog Day. On the other hand, I could see how in the right hands this plot would lend itself to some clever staging and music.
Was hoping for John C. Reilly, my interest in this just dropped to next to zero.
I seem to recall his name was attached to this at some point? Could it be another role? It's been ages since I saw the movie, so I can't remember much (well, anything) about it. I like Andy Karl, but an immensely good-looking American hunk seems a strange choice for a Bill Murray role.
He's a pretty well-known Broadway actor who originated the roles of Rocky in the show of the same name and Kyle et al. in Legally Blonde. He also played Fiyero in Wicked and Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys.

I think he's a very talented an versatile performer, and I'm actually very excited that we get him over here, though whether or not he suits the role remains to be seen ( I agree that he wouldn't have been a name that sprung to my mind, but I trust the casting directors, and Andy Karl based on his previous work). Excited for this now though!
I saw Andy Karl multiple times in Jersey Boys and once in Rocky. He's a force of nature and also very funny. You don't find a lot of guys who look like that who've also become known for their comedy. I wouldn't have expected Groundhog Day-type comedy out of him, but I'm optimistic!
