Groundhog Day the Musical - Old Vic

I'm so ambivalent about this. On the one hand, just... no. Don't mess with Groundhog Day. On the other hand, I could see how in the right hands this plot would lend itself to some clever staging and music.

I seem to recall his name was attached to this at some point? Could it be another role? It's been ages since I saw the movie, so I can't remember much (well, anything) about it. I like Andy Karl, but an immensely good-looking American hunk seems a strange choice for a Bill Murray role.

Thought he was great in On the Twentieth Century. Can't really see him in this one I admit but will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Andy Karl?

I think he's a very talented an versatile performer, and I'm actually very excited that we get him over here, though whether or not he suits the role remains to be seen ( I agree that he wouldn't have been a name that sprung to my mind, but I trust the casting directors, and Andy Karl based on his previous work). Excited for this now though!

When is this opening? But more importantly what's the height of the stage and it's running time ?

Is there day seats?

The Great Matthew Warchus has turned the legendary Old Vic, one of the most famous theatres in London into a circus, whether it's charging £140 for a seat for Masterbuilder or into a tryout venue to service the cashcow of New York, shame on it. There was a time they put shows on for their patrons, instead of prostituting itself for the other side of the Atlantic.

While I agree £140 is a bit much for a subsidised theatre's "premium seats" (a term I abhor but won't go into right now), I think it's great that Warchus is planning to create a load of new musicals with a lot of potential (Dennis The Menace is one I'm looking forward too!). As we've seen over the last few years opening big new musicals in the West End is a huge gamble that doesn't always pay off, what the Old Vic will do is allow them to be created with less financial pressure. Unlike Matilda, I guess the creators are probably have their hopes high for New York now seeing as it's highly speculated and anticipated, whereas Matilda was made just purely for a Christmas season or two at the RSC. But either way I'm sure they're treating the opening at the Old Vic just as serious as they would in New York or wherever. I just hope if it does go to New York then they'll bring it back to the West End in case I miss it this summer!

Glad they've gone for someone different to Bill Murray. I'm rather looking forward to this.
