Couldn't find a thread for this on here so apologies if there already is one!

Aha. I am looking forward to seeing what Minchin/Warchus do this time around - Matilda, after all, is their only collaboration thus far.

I'm so ambivalent about this. On the one hand, just... no. Don't mess with Groundhog Day. On the other hand, I could see how in the right hands this plot would lend itself to some clever staging and music.

Was hoping for John C. Reilly, my interest in this just dropped to next to zero.

Was hoping for John C. Reilly, my interest in this just dropped to next to zero. I seem to recall his name was attached to this at some point? Could it be another role? It's been ages since I saw the movie, so I can't remember much (well, anything) about it. I like Andy Karl, but an immensely good-looking American hunk seems a strange choice for a Bill Murray role.

You say that like Bill Murray's not an extremely attractive man actually.

Thought he was great in On the Twentieth Century. Can't really see him in this one I admit but will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Andy Karl?

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Andy Karl? He's a pretty well-known Broadway actor who originated the roles of Rocky in the show of the same name and Kyle et al. in Legally Blonde. He also played Fiyero in Wicked and Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys.

I think he's a very talented an versatile performer, and I'm actually very excited that we get him over here, though whether or not he suits the role remains to be seen ( I agree that he wouldn't have been a name that sprung to my mind, but I trust the casting directors, and Andy Karl based on his previous work). Excited for this now though!

I saw Andy Karl multiple times in Jersey Boys and once in Rocky. He's a force of nature and also very funny. You don't find a lot of guys who look like that who've also become known for their comedy. I wouldn't have expected Groundhog Day-type comedy out of him, but I'm optimistic!

When is this opening? But more importantly what's the height of the stage and it's running time ?

Agree he's a very different choice to Bill Murray for the role - younger for one thing! What's everyone's guess for Rita?

I was secretly hoping for John C. Riley to play Phil also. But I'm sure Andy Karl will be great!
Answering the first of reich's questions, I believe it is due to open in June after Jekyll & Hyde, however there's always the chance it may have been pushed back.
It would be great if there was a full announcement on Tuesday! I'm sure fans of the film will know why ;-)

The Great Matthew Warchus has turned the legendary Old Vic, one of the most famous theatres in London into a circus, whether it's charging £140 for a seat for Masterbuilder or into a tryout venue to service the cashcow of New York, shame on it. There was a time they put shows on for their patrons, instead of prostituting itself for the other side of the Atlantic.

I don't think that's a far assessment. We should be lucky we're getting the world premiere of a new musical there. You could say he used the Courtyard Theatre for a show that's now playing around the world (and charging £120/seat in London). It's a wise business choice to try a musical out in a smaller venue before West End or Broadway. Who knows? It may not go to New York.

While I agree £140 is a bit much for a subsidised theatre's "premium seats" (a term I abhor but won't go into right now), I think it's great that Warchus is planning to create a load of new musicals with a lot of potential (Dennis The Menace is one I'm looking forward too!). As we've seen over the last few years opening big new musicals in the West End is a huge gamble that doesn't always pay off, what the Old Vic will do is allow them to be created with less financial pressure. Unlike Matilda, I guess the creators are probably have their hopes high for New York now seeing as it's highly speculated and anticipated, whereas Matilda was made just purely for a Christmas season or two at the RSC. But either way I'm sure they're treating the opening at the Old Vic just as serious as they would in New York or wherever. I just hope if it does go to New York then they'll bring it back to the West End in case I miss it this summer!

I am really happy that we get a world premiere musical in the UK and will definitely be getting tickets when they are released. I love the film (I really must watch it again) and have faith in Tim Minchin as I adore the songs in Matilda.

If you are free Tuesday night, The Prince Charles Cinema (just off Leicester Square, by the Leicester Square Theatre) is screening it. On 35mm film too. And if you are a member (membership is £10 a year) it is only £1. Can't see The Old Vic beating that price! www.princecharlescinema.com/weeklyprogramme.php .

Ooh great. I really like Andy Karl. Lovely arms.
Glad they've gone for someone different to Bill Murray. I'm rather looking forward to this.
