Evita

Let's hear about people's favourite Evas over the years and the reasons why you felt they gave the 'best' performance. From the Evas I've seen live (Jacqui Scott, Paula Simpson, Madalena Alberto, Marti Webb - twice, Rachael Wooding, Abi Jaye, Elena Roger and a bootleg recording of Rebecca Storm), the best was Jacqui Scott for me. She had the belting range to sing the part as written and her acting was superb. She really made the transition from young 'tart' to First Lady in such a convincing way. Her persona throughout the performance really altered. Then, when she dies at the end, she became extremely frail - you genuinely believed she was dying. It was the most fantastic performance both vocally and in terms of acting. I think her Peron was Michael Bauer, who was also very good (and went on to play Max in Sunset Boulevard in London for years!!!!) Interestingly, I didn't see any of the original Evas in London, but from posts on other boards that I've read over the years, Marti Webb appears to have been many people's least popular (I thought she was ok when I saw her years later in the UK tour), whereas Stephanie Lawrence seems to be surprisingly popular. I say surprisingly because I just can't imagine her having the vocal power to sing certain parts of the score (e.g. Rainbow High, A New Argentina). Would have loved to hear her sing this score - difficult for me to imagine this with her vocal style, but I know several people have said how good she was in the role (the best London Evita, according to some). Paula Simpson and Becky Norman, bith alternates were the best I've seen.

Best Eva I have ever seen was years back when Jacqui Scott was Eva. I saw the alternate Paula Simpson and she was amazing.

It's the interval. I like everyone else but deary me.... how annoying is John P? Is it just me?! No. I've always wanted to see the show but I couldn't sit through a show with Mr Partridge in it. Can't stand the bloke.

I've listened to most versions and for me the best version by far was the UK tour with Maurice Clarke, Rebecca Storm and Chris Corcoran. That was the first UK tour and i still remember seeing it in Wimbledon. I wonder what happened to those people, they were all big names in the early 90's. Showing my age I can remember seeing Chris Corcoran as Joseph in the Kenwright tour. I saw this tour of Chess at every venue it played. Maurice Clarke had a superb voice. Must hunt out my recording.😉

Anyone else remember Richard Swerrun's turn as Joseph? Oh yes. Saw him countless times. My favourite Joseph was Australian Graeme Smith. Was just listening to Richard as Joseph last week.

The Tom Jones recording? There's an EP with John Barrowman where he sings 1-2 songs, but that's all I know. There's an audience recording of the final performance. Caroline O'Connor's voice practically hasn't changed since. Er a live full show recording 😉

Just checked and surprised to see that sixpences were still around in 1980. I remember them very well (2 and a half pence equivalent!) but thought they has gone earlier. Sad to relate that I also remember threepenny bits (the weirdest coin ever and an actual half a sixpence) as well as the old big pennys, ten shilling notes, shillings, florins, crowns, half crowns etc! We used to collect thruppeny bits in a journey sweet tin when I was little (totally showing my age there!) And as a child I loved the big old pennies and halfpennies... used to feel so rich when a got my pocket money! When I did Half A Sixpence as an amateur all the male chorus gave the female chorus a real half a sixpence on the opening night. i still have it somewhere.

I dunno, this is the first major revival in about 20 years of the show in London, and also there has never been a London Cast Recording so its not completely out of the possibilities is it? There is am Original London Cat Recording with Stafford Johns. I have the LP

When Matador was on in London I met Stephanie Powers who stood and chatted for ages. The next time we met Una Stubbs who had seen the show. Lovely ladies.

I can't stand Ross Noble or Lesley Joseph, so that's one less show to worry about wasting money on... Me to. I was going to see it but now Ross Noble is in it I'll save me money.

At the London Palladium last night several of us in the middle of the row were moaned at by a woman for not giving a standing ovation. We had to tell her we had been told before hand under no circumstances to get up - even when the whole audience was told to get up. This was due to 2 cameras being directly behind us & all you would have seen was the back of our heads had we done so. I can remember going to a Dave Willetts concert and being told off by several of his fans we weren't clapping or cheering each song enough! My reply was what I was listening to wasn't worthy of cheers or loud clapping. At the end the fans all stood up yelling and wooping.
