An article in The Stage today by Matthew Hemsey (behind a paywall) saying that the RSC begins crucial talks with Cam Mack over Les Mis royalties for the new production.
It is stated that since 1985 the RSC has earned 25million do date from Les Mis.
Trevor Nunn in 2010 said to The Telegraph that he had not been asked to work on the new production "we knew nothing about it, we were kept in the dark". Adding that the later production was a "variant production that owes everything that's good about it to the original production".
Frances Ruffelle (Eponine in the original production) has tweeted that Les Mis was successful not just because of the story and the music but "mainly because of the incredible direction by John Caird and Trevor Nunn. Their staging on the revolve was staggeringly beautiful. It took my breath away every time. Nothing else compares".

Interesting. I saw an early performance and it was full of west end wendies reacting to EVERYTHING.. so it’s kind of good to hear that ‘regular’ audiences aren’t whooping the house down. Agree - first time I went audience were primed and were borderline hysterical. It was ABSOLUTELY over-hyped. Like Hamilton. The Wendies having decided it was amazing before they even stepped through the door. Actually can make it difficult to just take in the piece when you feel like an outsider in the club. Still, I found there was much to enjoy and booked again for February on GILT. You can add me to the list of people relieved that the audience has become more 'regular.' I hope this happens sometime at Hamilton so I can check that out again. I am pleased I am not the only one who has felt alienated from the rest of the audience in a WE theatre recently. I am a gay man but just loathed the gay West End Wendies around me both at this and The Inheritance. Preened, plucked and polished determined to be "seen" and heard. I suspect it took them all afternoon to get ready! Greeting acquaintances as long lost relatives in the foyer blocking the space. No wonder I am single as on occasions like this I hate 90% of gay men!

We theatre folk have know about him for years of course but the general public will not know his name. It will be incredible for his future profile, theatre work and pay.
The TV audience will see him on Holby City doing Children in Need and be ASTONISHED the doctor can sing!

Am i the only one who's slightly put off by this video? I love this show and i already have tickets to go on my birthday, but the vocals just seem... off? Maybe i've just listened to the OBCR too much and am not used to new voices? But there seems to be *something* missing Oh, I was totally put off by this video. I do not know this show at all and I realise that although they need media attention I think showing an early rehearsal is a mistake. The show should be called Bake Off - The Musical! During the first song A Soft Place to Land I expected Mary Berry to pop up and start judging and Paul Hollywood to appear and try and date one of the girls! Mind you that might have made the number more exciting! What was all that "movement" about, swaying around - had they been on the cooking sherry? I struggled to watch the 12 minute video - I can't see me sitting through this at all! I'm not the target market I don't think! I am sure the show MUST be better than that? I think it will need very positive reviews and word of mouth! Missing Kinky Boots already! David Hunter has clearly got a lease on his dressing room!

Now it's probably me being terribly snobby but I do think the Only Fools and Horses marquee looks terribly tacky on the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
It isn't exactly Maggie Smith in the Way of the World, Peter O' Toole in Man and Superman, Paul Scofield and Vanessa Redgrave in Heartbreak House, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in Waiting for Godot etc. is it?

Well this in some peoples opinion may be a "tacky" filler but it is selling well. Just checked random dates through Jan - March on the ATG website and only premium and package seats available at silly money in the stalls at least!

Yes, lots of happy memories of almost a bygone age browsing the shop, spending a fortune, always buying what was playing and being introduced to new shows and recordings.
My biggest memory of the shop though was literally bumping into Barbara Cook who was there to do a signing. I was already in the shop and unaware the signing was happening, turned round and literally bumped into her. She was delightful, and laughed and I was totally star struck and tongue tied although I did manage to burble something along the lines of "oh, I love your work" or something equally inane! I then joined the queue to have the CD signed and when it was my turn she laughed and said "well I hope I bump into to you again!" Sadly we never did.

Despite the massive numbers of musicals out there "available" for amateurs and professional companies to perform - some of which I have never heard of, the pool of reasonably guaranteed box office hits is remarkably small. Musicals are ridiculously expensive to mount even on the amateur market and box office sales are crucial. Hence the endless (yawn) revivals of Oliver! My Fair Lady, Annie, etc. etc. Even well known critically acclaimed shows can be poor box office - most of the Sondheim shows for example.
Chichester are not going to risk producing No No Nanette.

Interesting post @posterj above.
I think the brilliance of the piece is that different people will take different views on the material. Dealing with marriage, age, relationships, singledom etc. the piece will resonate and entertain to a greater or lesser extent depending on the individuals personal experiences.
I thought the gender swap worked brilliantly (despite my initial reservations when I first heard about it) and the production is IMO the best in the WE at the moment!

Just thinking about it, MTI have just released the revised version of Oliver! to the amateur market - so I would be somewhat surprised if it was getting another big professional production at this stage. A regional theatre revival of Oliver would not necessarily affect the amateur rights unless it was expected to transfer the production to the West End. I think Cam Mack has the WE rights to the show so I suspect this would not be expected to transfer. It would be big box office for the theatre - it is still a hugely popular show - and the theatre will need a guaranteed box office hit to anchor the summer season.

Yes Dreamgirls finished too on Saturday evening and little fuss on here about that either. I think it is a testament to the 42nd St company that they maintained the standard throughout the run. Dreamgirls with recasting was not the same show at the end.

I suspect all the kids were from a stage school and performed on a rota like the kids do in Matilda or Annie. It was terribly slick when I saw it. They knew the song/rhyme without even looking at the words. Genuine kids are much slower in their responses.

I'm reading this thread back from the beginning and good lord I really wasn't that much on board when it was first announced. Wow. Oh, I wasn't keen on the announcement of 42nd St either danieljohnson14But in my defence I was expecting some tired revival - minimal scenery, cast of 20 - desperately trying to fill the vast stage, band of 8, lots of click track. You get the idea? However, on learning more about the scale of the production I booked a £15 front row ticket for the first preview and was COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY by the scale of the whole thing! It was such a treat to see such old fashioned production values after years of "stripped" down and "actor musician" musicals. I returned many times after that and I am not usually a repeat visitor to shows. The whole preview was summed up for me when, as I left the theatre a young man was on his mobile phone saying to a friend "OMG I've never seen anything like it!"

I wonder if over 11,000 empty seats increases demand for other shows in town due to less competition or it doesn't make any difference as less people go to the theatre and only go to see shows they want to see anyway?
