She was dreadful in Flare Path too. I don't understand how she gets the work.

I thought it was fabulously staged beginning with a great shipwreck/storm/tempest scene. Superb lighting and projections and fascinating avatar computer work. Some scenes were truly beautiful to behold. It is a testament to the cast that they were not upstaged by the staging.
Edit - the Barbican is in an awful location to get to.....

So....the drama continues....so how many shows a week is Amber scheduled to do now? It really should be made clear as other posters have said. Frankly, I don't think it is a bigger sing than Evita or Elphaba for example.

When I saw the overblown production at the Palace Theatre I thought that it would work much better as a small "chamber" musical as there is very little ensemble work and is character based on a few principle roles. The staging was terrible with dizzying projections which were awful. Who will ever forget some of the cast "running" up a staircase on the spot!
It certainly isn't a thriller though......

I have to say I thought it was a straightforward adaptation of the novel.

I thought it was just me...but I hate that staircase - it throws everything off centre. I too have seen much better amateur work. Plus of course the heat. God alone knows what it has been like these last few weeks. Cannot face Blondel at all.

It's just that when in town I think there will always be something more interesting/entertaining/exciting to see.....

This was terrific at the Charing Cross Theatre - but it was hardly a sell out. I do wonder how this will do both artistically and commercially in some of the biggest UK venues. Especially with an unknown cast. Do we think they will try and draft in "name" ?

I concur with the posters above - an incredible night in the theatre last night for Matt's last performance as Lola. The entire cast were on fire and blew the roof off the theatre.
I do wonder if Matt will return to the role of Lola somewhere in the world at some time. These roles only come round once in lifetime. He will certainly be missed. The new Lola has indeed, got big boots to fill. I have only seen his performance on video at WEL and was not impressed although it is unfair to judge a performance at gigs such as this. It will be interesting to hear views from people who will see both.

How about some product placement for cash like they have on the TV?
Suggestions?

Parsley will not be able to leave at the interval if there isn't one!

I was on the second row sat behind the two prompters who were part of the tour group in the first scene. I could not help but notice the HUGE chunks of dialogue for Felicity Kendal highlighted in green! A huge role to learn. The prompters were riveted to the scripts on the first preview, a few prompts but more noticeably flicking through the pages in panic to find where Felicity had jumped to ( or made up) and if she could get it back on track. This was the most amusing part of the evening!

I saw the first preview performance of this and was very disappointed too. I did think it might improve ( especially some familiarity with the lines would have been appreciated) but clearly it hasn't.
No West End transfer looking likely, although I am sure with the names involved they must have hoped for one?

Full price at TKTS. I have not seen any discounts. Hence the empty seats.

Balcony shut. Grand circle 20% full and Dress circle 60% full. Will this last? I want to see this but the issue is the prices! £99.50 for front stalls and circle and £62.50 to sit at what basically is the back of the stalls. Plus I really don't think Audra is a "name" over hear - I know this would be heresy to the Mark Shentons of the world who basically worship her but I don't think she is known over here. I may take up the suggestion further up the thread by vabbian and go for row G of the circle for £19.50.

The blinds were the original production at Drury Lane, directed by Nicholas Hytner.

... don't worry, I'm sure if you just turn up they'll hand you £200 pocket-money anyway, then let you go on your way. Or they will give you £150 for a new pair of shoes!

WEL isn't kind to performers with sound issues, performing "cold", open air concert/festival vibe rather than a theatricl experience. So it is unfair to judge a performance on the basis of this alone.
I have seen both Amber and Marisha in performance at the Savoy and I can say that both are incredible live. Amber has the "better" voice, but is not especially a strong actress but has the "star quality". Marisha (IMO) is the better actress and is very emotional vocally - really digging deep with the vocals, but hasn't got the "voice" of Amber. At the interval after AIATY the interval chat was buzz of " how does she do that every night?" To which I thought "she doesn't". I would think Marisha would struggle to deliver the performance I saw every night.

I've never been in a show that started on time. Always five minutes past start time. I have noticed this recently in the West End. The house it fully in but the doors are still open and everyone just sits there. It is almost like there is a policy of waiting for late arrivals.

There is definitely a show to be written about the backstage of Dreamgirls at this theatre!

Caught this the other evening thanks to a £20 Today Tix Rush Ticket.
It wasn't especially my cup of tea...not because I was shocked (although I think I was supposed to be) but that I felt I had seen it all before (and better) - Once A Catholic by Mary O'Malley back in the late 70's. John Godber's Bouncers and Teechers and more recently Spring Awakening.
The audience reaction around me was very diverse with people in front of me and to the side sat in stony silence and people behind laughing heartily throughout.
I could not fault the splendid performances and the superb singing of the cast though.
