This is one show I wouldn’t be upset to see swing back in as a West End gap filler sometime.

Not been following the plays so much this year but my thoughts are:
Musical: Hell’s Kitchen Illinoise Suffs The Outsiders Here Lies Love
Musical Revival Merrily We Roll Along Cabaret Tommy Gutenberg

I think if it had opened on Broadway this season it would probably have been the front runner for Best Musical/Best Book quite easily. Next season has Smash and Tammy Faye to compete with but I’d imagine it has a good shot next year too.

I remember it! Very dance heavy musical but I think I'd definitely say there was also lots of singing? More a Musical Revue/Song Cycle than a book musical.

That’s a lot of quality bangers to fit into scenes 1 & 2!!! Have a feeling that spoiler only covers act two.

For those of us who haven’t seen it, how would you describe the show? After the first 5 minutes, I thought, wow this is going to be bloody great. And then I just couldn't click with it. It is crazy. The opening number is brilliantly done.

So that gap at the Gillian Lynne is between September and February. Enough time for a decent run of something. Curious what it might be.

I thought I would resurrect this thread rather than start a new one. I might manage to tack a weekend in New York onto a work trip at the end of May. What are people's current recommendations? I want to see things that won't end up coming to London. Absolutely Lempicka if it’s still running. I thought it was the best new musical I saw on my two week trip earlier this month. I’d say Suffs is unlikely to transfer and is very good. Same for The Outsiders and Great Gatsby. Hell’s Kitchen and Notebook are very good too but can see them being the mostly like to transfer.

I wonder if Sohoplace would be the best fit. Stage wise they can make it similar to the donmar but also as it is so new it would probably he easier to rig up all the head phones. It's also free from July. Atg are teasing so I’d be surprised if it wasn’t one of their venues

Shows in great shape. I won the lottery they have for the 25th anniversary and paid £25 for the front row at the matinee. I’m glad I finally got to see Mazz in the role because she was off last time I went and she didn’t disappoint. Absolutely one of the best vocals in the West End, you’d never know she’d been doing this role for such a long time.
Pure fun from start to finish. And absolutely packed. This one shows no sign of slowing down.

Hope they have also kept Dress Your Way Up. That was really the only standout number.
After seeing Hamilton again on Wednesday evening, I'd love to cast Georgina Onuorah as Andy. She'll have just finished Kiss Me, Kate by then too.

Initial rumours I’d read had this as Ramin Karimloo/Lea Michele but with Ramin doing Pirates of Penzance it will either be a different cast or it will be in the autumn of next year (25/26 season)

Is there a closing date announced? Or would it be open-ended (not likely, but thought i'd ask anyhow) I would imagine it will be open ended.

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), This was eligible for the 2024 awards so it won't be eligible again. I note that Kiln has dropped from paying the levy to allow it's productions to be eligible for the main category Olivier Awards, it will now be eligable for the Affiliate award. Oh interesting! I didn’t realise Kiln productions were eligible.

What's a tradition if you don't continue it? Never too early to start the conversation. This time last year, Sunset Boulevard hadn't even been announced, although 3/4 Best Musical nominees had (including of course winner Operation Mincemeat which had already began previews)
New Musical It's gonna be a big year of British grassroots musical theatre vs big American imports. Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), Kathy & Stella Solve a Murder, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Babies, The Devil Wears Prada, Mean Girls, MJ, Why Am I So Single? Passing Strange, A Face in the Crowd, Opening Night (almost forgot this one already) Potentially: Shucked, Some Like It Hot
Musical Revival Hello, Dolly! Kiss Me, Kate, Fiddler on the Roof, Starlight Express, A Chorus Line Potentially: Oliver!
New Play Lots announced already. Slave Play, Between Riverside and Crazy, Skeleton Crew, The Hot Wing King and Giant are the ones which stand out to me at the moment.
Play Revival Another busy category, always. Shakespeare Rules? Players Kings, Romeo & Juliet. Also A View From the Bridge, Waiting for Godot, The Little Foxes. Anything else standing out?
I'm sure there will be many more productions announced before the ceremony, but it's already looking like another very busy year.

It’s doing an extended run in New York too and with the huge St. James to fill and a fairly recent production of Sunset in NY, I imagine tickets may be a little easier to come by over there, especially in the winter months. Broadway ticket buying habits have moved to very last minute with tickets for even Cabaret/Merrily readily available up until the day of the performance and with dynamic pricing.

I did not think this came over well at the Oliviers. The use of the actors own accents (to me) does not work and create any kind of cohesive world (particularly for me Grace and Mel) - and Hades needs to sing about another octave down... I haven’t seen it in the West End yet but the accents are certainly jarring if you’re used to the Broadway album.

Curious as to what will transfer from the current Broadway season. Of the musicals, I would say The Notebook and Tommy the most likely two to make it to the West End. The others I think it unlikely we see in their current productions, although The Outsiders would be nice to see transfer (and Lempicka, but with its current numbers I'd say very doubtful) For plays I imagine we could see Stereophonic at Hampstead theatre or somewhere similar. Isn't Stereophonic produced by Sonia Friedman? She'd probably take it straight into the West End. Aah yes I'd forgotten she was involved. It's a strange one because it's such an intimate show.
