The acoustics are awful in both Olivier and Lyttleton but no excuse for mikes. Imo the actors should be able to sort it out. The actors have been amplified in the Olivier at least almost since the NT opened, I think initially with fixed microphones. Sometimes it was so badly done that it sounded like the actors were behind you at the back of the stalls. Stoppard had them for that trilogy faux Chekhov thing. The one with video screens…I don’t think there was much miking before then. In the early days i learnt not to go into the circle as the sound is so poor there, not the actors’ fault I don’t think. And in the very early days at the old RSC theatre in Stratford you could hear a whisper in the last row of the Gods where you would mostly find me. And right at the top of the ROH you can hear everything clearly. There is a reason theatres were built like they were. Making the Olivier an amphitheatre was a mistake.

I also watched tonight and I’m not sure about this one. Not helped that because of the exorbitant pricing I went for front of the balcony, and bloody hell it is high up there, I’m not usually one for drama about heights but I honestly did not feel safe getting to my seat so spent the first 20 minutes still with a high level If anxiety from that. The prices really are shockingly high at this theatre, and the seating shockingly bad in the areas I’ve tried so far. The play itself - I think most of the criticisms of it - generally that it’s not actually shocking or surprising when it’s meant to be, because we’ve all seen countless similar stories of how the Nazis did what they did by now, and it’s our history, our grandparents and great grandparents stories. But this was written 41 years ago now - the war ended 36 years before that - so 41 years ago perhaps we weren’t as “used” to this whole idea, and the audience was either there when it happened or it was their parents, they were that much closer to these events. At the time it was written it may not have seemed so unsubtle and predictable. The acting was superb, and I’m glad I saw DT. All 3 of them gave very impressive performances, the split-second switching between characters/scenes/internal monologue/memories and current scenes was very well done every time. You’re definitely aware you are in the presence of great actors watching them do their thing. Maybe this has been playing long enough now that it’s reasonable for discussion of the plot in more detail on here without if being considered a spoiler? I have questions about the ending. What is your question? I think it would be ok to discuss now

Agree - elbow meant whole point down? Ridiculous. But the scoring is very high now and the dances are all very like ‘finals’ standard used to be.

From the photos, it looks like at least some of the actors are wearing microphones Is that really the case? I haven’t seen this, but its fairly common or even these days almost the default in the Olivier and Lyttelton for the actors to have microphones. I realise that the theatre acoustics and ability to project should be enough, but particularly with other sound effects to be heard over or just quality of sound, I think microphones are fine. The acoustics are awful in both Olivier and Lyttleton but no excuse for mikes. Imo the actors should be able to sort it out.

People say this every year and there's not the slightest shred of evidence that the pro brings in the votes to any significant extent. Anton went out early plenty of times, Giovanni went out early this series, Oti with Ugo etc. Johannes in a different league.

Yes I think Johannes has a large fan club! He is such a gent and to be fair they deliver a nice dance each time with the comedy numbers better than most. I also predictedMolly being in the dance off because pink and pretty isn't enough, her jive was weak. Seems a nice person though. Tyler’s dance was unexceptional and he hasn’t fulfilled his initial promise. Maybe he has other things to be getting on with.

I would like to see more baking and no more constructions. Who would eat some of the glued together stuff they have to present? What about wedding cakes or simpler bakes done to perfection? And yes, leave out the funnies which they seem to out in everything, the pottery show, the jewellery show and this. Let the humour emerge naturally from the personalities in the competition. There was plenty of humour in the bakers this year without the false humour added. This said, i liked the winner who has plenty to offer future tv but please no blue peter style stuck in the air stuff.

I’m amazed it doesn’t happen more often now we don't have the actual tic in our paws. I’m continuously looking at the phone messages making sure I’ve got the day and time right.

The Spoiler has been updated to say Tony withdrew with a pulled hamstring- not clear if he did the dance-off at all, or stopped in the middle. In either case, he was in the bottom two, so did the Arsenal fans stop voting for him or did the message go out that he'd had enough?! I’ll watch later but a neat get out, the judges don’t have to vote him off, thus avoiding opprobrium. He was given jokey dances and i think that is a shame. I would have liked to have seen him do the classic ballrooms. It would be a shame for the programme to descend into just being about how older guys are good sports..

I’m ten minutes in and though loving the period detail, I’m a little bored. Ten minutes is usually all we give a new programme in our house.

‘Twas always afters and now it is dessert. Like I always had tea which is now dinner….can you believe it. Except now it is tea for one of my offspring who thankfully married a Northener. And for some people I know it is ‘fruit’ 😳 as if nothing resembling anything cooked or sugary would ever pass their lips.
Just to add, not fancies or bakewells but custard tarts.. thank you

I just finished binging the whole thing. I agree that Imelda Staunton has HM's voice down cold. Elizabeth Dubiki had Diana's Sloan Ranger drawl, along with her mannerisms down to a tee. Being long and lanky, there were times it was hard to tell it wasn't the real Princess - kind of uncanny. I know the red tops were screaming bloody murder claiming that telly Charles was plotting to make the Queen abdicate. Didn't come off like that to me. It was more sympathetic to Charles, Camilla, and William than I expected. The scene where young William had to show Granny how to use the remote for the new satellite service was so familiar and so funny. To be honest, I was watching for Timothy Dalton. Sad he was only in a single episode - I've been following his career since the early 80s. His scenes with Leslie Manville were lovely. I will also admit to fast forwarding through most of the Diana/Bashir stuff since I obviously lived through those years and anyone who was around for the original Panarama interview saw endless replays of segments on the news in those days. Bored of it now. I think they easily could have kept Tobias Menzies and Olivia Coleman for this series, because Staunton and Jonathan Pryce both looked at least ten to 15 years older than the royals were meant to be, IMO. I felt as if Pryce made a good elderly Philip, but Philip was not quite in his dotage in the 90s. I enjoyed seeing flashbacks with actors from the first couple of series, but I feel as if the writing isn't as good as it was originally. I also find myself mentally differentiating between my memories of what really happened and the show version. Am I the only one wondering why Michael Sheen wasn't called - I'm so used to him being Blair in the Morgan-verse. Haven’t watched yet but this is interesting. Having seen the original , as it were, debacle as it happened I wonder if a drama would be more effective for me if it were the off stage situations a la Stoppard’s R&D Are Dead and some of James Graham etc.

Don't tell me they've done away with them at the refurbished Drury Lane. 42nd Street wouldn't have been 42nd Street without *that* opening. But were they the ones belonging to the theatre or were they just a set made specifically for that show? I imagine most theatres have put theirs in storage nowadays somewhere. Future Antique Road shows..

Unless a miracle happens, I expect Tony’s jive to be lacking technique. But those 100, 000 Arsenal voters will see him through. Hope the People’s Choice Curse doesn’t hit Hamza.

Aren't some ROH audience members notorious for booing if they don't like a performance? Yes, but not usually during the performance for individual arias or passages; they normally wait until the end and save their boos for the conductor or the director during the curtain call. I've never experienced it during a performance. Never heard booing but have experienced weak applause….

I haven’t started watching yet but of course I will binge it. The thing about truth in historical drama was dealt with by Shakespeare who set the rules. I dare say not all of the contemporary audience knew who the antagonists in the History plays were or whether Henry IV spoke to his son as portrayed but o boy is it dramatic. And of course Richard III will never recover, car park notwithstanding, from the portrayal Shakespeare has embedded in us. And Shakespeare knew which side his bread was buttered on, that being the change. Now, we are not concerned with what our Monarchy thinks because they have no power. The writers are concerned about ratings, the demographics of the audience and money. ( Willie was concerned about money too but not maybe US advertising contracts ) If tv as a medium survives, then The Crown will be what many, many people know is the truth about the British Royal Family for the rest of time. We have to accept that. If tv survives then there will be documentaries correcting the views and portrayals in the series. May our grandchildren enjoy them. For now, people can squeal as much as they like, it is what it is.

Tyler looks good, nice smile but this last dance was slapdash and unappealing. And he knew it. Hamza should get to final. Molly yes, good but better than Fleur? Or Kym now Kym is showing her potential? Tony now knows he is popular and his agent knows he is employable so can we see what he does next week but if that is the shambles he did this week, he should find a way out.

Yes, Grandma Kym very impressive. And I agree about the song arrangement ‘why they call it the blues’ it was dreadful. They always praise the singing but I don't think it has been very good lately. I read that the football guy wants to be taken seriously. If that is the case then they should chuck him out this week because he danced very poorly. Perhaps his agent can get him on something else, the jungle prog or the one with marriages or jumping off cliffs - is that one? should be.

So they put Ellie in a black dress so you can hardly see her and we will wonder why she doesn’t do well or get any votes.
