This must have been such a difficult decision but I wish they had decided to go ahead. I feel upset for all those taking part but especially for the young composer James B. Wilson whose work 1922 was due to be premiered at the Last Night. As the mother of a aspiring composer I know just how difficult these breaks are to get - the constant round of submissions, disappointments etc. I hope he gets another opportunity soon.

If The Royal Albert Hall wasn't so booked solid, perhaps they could have moved it to a later date, perhaps a Coronation Prom could be scheduled for next year.

just read that the final nights of the season have been cancelled. Understandable Would have been a wonderful and emotional evening with a rousing National Anthem, no? They didn't trust the audience to be respectful. Big mistake. Imagine having tickets to this concert.

I think it's a shame they cancelled too. I don't know what the programme was, but I'm sure everyone would have been sympathetic if there was felt they needed to switch out any unsuitable material and add a pause for reflection. But I'd have thought even the joyous stuff could be made to work, and in some ways be more emotional than a fully sombre tone.
The official guidance on mourning is reminding people that there is no expectation of everyone cancelling their plans. The Queen's years of service were the embodiment of the show going on, and I think she'd have been fine with it.

I suspect there wasn't time to plan and rehearse an appropriate new programme. The second half is just a bit too upbeat to happen without a lot of key elements being dropped

The last night did go ahead just four days after 9/11, with Leonard Slatkin conducting a very moving performance of Barber's Adagio for Strings.

I wonder what happens to the pieces that were commissioned for the Last Night of The Proms, will they be moved to next year or simply go unheard.

Adams Short ride in a fast machine (1986) was scheduled for the year Princes Di died and then rescheduled but due to 9/11 was cancelled again. Thankfully it did eventually appear at the Proms in 2004, 2014 and 2019.
