Thanks for looking and trying to find a positive about the concerts! The entire Proms season happening in full is a positive! The only people looking for negatives are those who seem to expect a classical music series to do full musicals by default, which is their own folly. The Proms are about celebrating classical music, which gets much less mainstream attention than much of the musical theatre that gets an airing in London theatres 6 days a week, not just a few weeks every summer! Besides, if you look for it you'll find Bernstein and Gershwin in the programme this year so I'm not really sure there is anything to complain about. |

There have been musicals or MT themed concerts for the past ten years - hardly ‘folly’ I would suggest to hope for this to continue. And one out of 72 concerts - which are always popular, broadcast on the TV and repeated often is hardly ‘folly’ to hope for. Also, my licence fee contributes to the running of a radio station which is solely for classical music - ‘less mainstream attention’? I don’t think so. I also thought this was a forum where we would express different opinions. I am so pleased that you are happy with the programme. I am really disappointed that there are only 2 concerts with Early Choral music as well. I am sure you’ll find a way to tell me rudely that I am wrong to have that opinion too. |

Playing devils advocate, looking at the last decade, I think "every year" is an overstatement. 2021 - Broadway compilation 2020 - nothing 2019 - nothing 2018 - West Side Story 2017 - Oklahoma 2016 - Gershwin revue 2015 - Fiddler on the Roof (opera) 2014 - Kiss me Kate 2013 - nothing 2012 - My Fair Lady 2011 - nothing 5 semi-staged productions, 4 years of nothing & 2 years of revues. Most have been at the helm of John Wilson who, as has been mentioned earlier, is pursuing a more classical direction currently. Should he give this up to appease people wanting a musical themed prom? There have been Gospel Proms regularly over the last decade but nothing this year, is that a snub for religious music? |

[/quote ] I really don’t want to be ‘that’ person but in 2019 - Warner Bros Prom (included musicals) 2013 was Film music (but had some MT content) 2011 Hooray for Hollywood. 2010 Sondheim one There was a cracking Sinatra prom one year as well as this and often G and S - so there is a tradition of ‘lighter’ fare. The My Fair Lady year, there was another John Wilson prom as well. Two MT themed proms - I wish I had realised at the time how fortunate we were. I agree that the fabulous John Wilson is a real loss to lighter music at the Proms but there are other conductors who could deliver good MT music. I wouldn’t have a problem with a regular gospel prom as well - there actually isn’t much religious music this year as there is so little choral music, in comparison to other years. Sorry for being fussy but I am trying to make a point! |

Firstly, I specified "looking at the last decade" (2011-21) hence no reference of proms in 2010. Moreover, the post I replied to specified "musical themed" and the Proms you've mentioned ('19/'13/'11) were Hollywood/Movie themed, not MT. Granted some MT songs were performed (in the same way Cynthia Erivo is singing a few MT songs this year). The point of object in some posts here was that there is no dedicated Musical Theatre prom, as there apparently had been for decades... Just calling it as I see it. This years Gaming Prom (Prom 21) features a suite from Battlefield, it doesn't make it a Battlefield themed prom. |

alece10 I was at a number over 3000 at 9.00am. Was told it would be two hours. However it moved very quickly and in fact it was only 35 minutes. Processed my proms planner without any drama. My daughter is a final year music student at Cambridge University and I was sorting things out for her as much as for me so I feel hugely relieved. I can be popular mum again for a moment (though not quite as popular as I was when I got early Hamilton tickets back in her teenage years!)

Yes mine went quickly too and it was about 35 minutes in the end. I only wanted one Prom (Cynthia Erivo) and had submitted my plan in advance so it all went very smoothly and got my ticket. Only thing I would have preferred would be to allow you to select your own seat but I can understand why they allocate for you. I might, nearer the time, contact the box office to see if I can change to an aisle seat which is really what I need. Now I can enjoy the sunshine in the garden. |

I think he’s rather unfairly pigeon holed prom-wise as a broadway/film/classic musicals conductor when he’s very versatile and a superb classical exponent. Tomorrow he’s conducting Vaughan Williams and Elgar etc. and I’m very much looking forward to it (apart from the heat.)

I caught part of the Aretha Franklin Prom the other night on the radio. It was a brilliant piece of music making. Full of passion and soul.

Mahler’s 2nd with Rattle conducting LSO was quite an event on Wednesday night. The RAH - pretty problematic for so much classical music - was well nigh ideal for such a monumental piece. The off-stage instruments were really effective.
I’ve seen Rattle many times in concert and quite often been underwhelmed, even when conducting BPO but he really delivered here and the all important, transcendental climactic ending was the best I’ve ever heard in this piece.
It’s on BBC 4 tomorrow night.

Well that was even better than expected,though not quite the religious experience that Andi Oliver clearly was having. Well chosen repertoire, expertly delivered, and deserving of that ovation.

She isn't a natural at interacting with the audience when talking though.
Only thing that spoilt it for me were the commentators who prattle on and were far too gushing.

It's like every music event Beeb televise has to be presented like a football match. Preamble before kick off, half time analysis, guest pundits with some relevant experience etc. Except usually its either a dance around trying to find alternative words for virtuoso as they shower praise on the key performer, or the pundits are trying to outdo each other or the presenter and it all becomes a bit insincere. They do some nice rehearsal footage edits though and with the right Presenter/Editor team there can be some interesting musical analysis and history. It's just sometimes they fall into the trap of playing it very safe or the limited resources show, there's only so many times in a season Neil Brand can guest. haha. Watched the Aretha Franklin Prom last night and wow what a treat!! Jules Bukley as every with some fantastic arrangements and Sheléa - to whom this was my first introduction - really did all the songs justice. |

Having a lazy sunday with a catch up watching the Aretha Franklin tribute and Cynthia Erivo prom concerts this afternoon and what fantastic concerts they are with two wonderful singers and orchestra's. A real joy watching those two ladies perform at the RAH.

Just back from the ENO Glass/Handel prom at the Printworks at Canada Water. It was a lot of fun with Anthony Roth Constanzo looking and sounding ravishing in Raf Simons couture. The venue is clearly used to a different sort of clientele given the list of prohibitions on the door. This afternoon's audience was more likely to be in possession of an artificial hip than an artificial substance. It certainly didn't feel like the prom had attracted a particularly different sort of audience from the norm. They are repeating it again this evening and tickets are still available if anyone fancies an evening of feeling like you are actually in a Peter Greenaway movie, as dancers with torches process among the throng! Sensible shoes and the ability to stand/promenade for an hour and twenty minutes required.
