Anyone have any info on what's going on at the Menier?
On the main stage, Haebas Corpus is finishing end of February and there's still no announcement for what's up next.
Even more conspicuously, their new studio space which opened in October hosted one play that shut last month and nothing is currently playing there or has been announced.
Very odd, particularly seeing as they received almost £1m in the Culture Recovery Fund...

I suspect the 1 million has stabilised the books and they are currently playing it very cautiously.

I suspect the 1 million has stabilised the books and they are currently playing it very cautiously. £1m meant they should have been bold, those who got little or nothing should be cautious. Odd these handouts apparently were given without strings attached - Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory took the money then promptly closed forever without producing anything. |

The funding took a long time to come through. Could be that the grants received were used to pay off debts/losses accrued between March & July 2020 and thats all they covered, or anything remaining went into maintaining hibernation until a time in which its financially viable and sustainable to return.
2021 was hardly a booming year for theatre.

Could be that the grants received were used to pay off debts/losses accrued between March & July 2020 and thats all they covered, or anything remaining went into maintaining hibernation until a time in which its financially viable and sustainable to return. 2021 was hardly a booming year for theatre. Maybe but if so that was the wrong use of the money - it was a *recovery* fund. I’m unimpressed with the RSC’s efforts too given how much they received. |

These grants, they have to be paid back… right? It was a loan not a gift? Only £252m of the fund was allocated to 'repayable finance' (20-year loans with interest at 2% p.a.). The remainder of the up to £1.57bn fund is not repayable but is, in the case of for-profit recipients, taxable income. |

But only hosting one show with no future plans in place seems bizzare at best and a foolish use of public money at worst… That reminds me, Southwark Playhouse are apparently going ahead with their plan to run three auditoriums in two entirely separate theatres one at Elephant & Castle and one somewhere else (South Bank somewhere ?). That’s bold. Or foolhardy. |

If paying off debts/levelling out losses means a company can sustain itself on hiatus until it's financially viable to continue, rather than go bust, I'd consider that fair use. |

Also some of those debts may well have been to specialist theatrical suppliers and paying them may have kept them afloat. |

Maria's show, while well-reviewed, and full and well-received when I went early in the run, seems to have over-extended judging by the discount offers that have appeared for the last two weeks of the run.

Still nothing announced, which is a shame. I hope they return to their usual two musicals a year. A production of "...Forum" is long overdue. As for something newer, it would be a great venue for Gentleman's Guide or Bright Star.

Sad whats happening, I attended the final MF concert yesterday, initially I thought I had the wrong date or time as it looked shuttered and dark. Turns out I was punctual and the place just had zero atmosphere. |

I asked when I attended Maria Friedman last week what was coming up next. They said they would be closing for refurbishment and nothing was scheduled yet. Didn't say how long refurbishment would take and I didn't think to ask. Did they what the refurb is ? The stairs and loos could do with some tlc. I can't help thinking the lobby could do with a rejig |
