Brilliant news. I'm off to join the queue now. Actually it will be interesting to see how packed it gets this year. People might flock because it didn't happen last year and it's the first big theatre event back but on the other hand a packed Trafalgar Square may still be a little too much for a lot of people.

This year's lineup - Hamilton and Book of Mormon finally make appearances, while Wicked aren't on there (yet). I'd expect Hamilton will be King George and Book of Mormon will be You And Me (But Mostly Me).

Just applied for a covid pass letter as the website says no admittance without one.

Ive been lucky in the past and had an invite to the VIP section which means that I can sit down. Waiting to hear about this year but if not will have to give it a miss as can't really stand for too long.

I can’t help feeling this is a bit strange.
They have a major sporting event- the Euros and there was the risk of the virus spreading.
The London Pride March and Notting Hill Carnival were cancelled for the second year for fear of spreading the virus, yet they want to pack hundreds of people into Trafalgar Square?
What about all of the cast members from varying shows intermingling backstage?

Tempted to pop in on Saturday morning, but I can't quite stomach the idea of the hours of early queueing from the pre-covid days...

I went to the cricket at the Oval last week. Thought I'd get used to it by the end of the day but I didn't really enjoy the crowds one bit. Just try your best all the way through the day.

Yes I agree London is always busy but from my past experience Pride especially, and WE Live to a slightly lesser extent, make the West End area significantly busier than it already is on ordinary Saturdays.

Does anyone know if the casting typically affects who is performing in the show that day? I'm looking at going to see Phantom on the Saturday and was just wondering if the understudies might be on if the main cast is performing in this.. any thoughts?

It’s time to make this a ticketed event surely? Just at a price to cover the ticketing and maybe raise a bit for charidee. Or just move it to a park. It’s crazy that they’re still trying to do this in the middle of the West end as well as being totally unfair to anyone who can’t start queuing at 6am.

I'm staying close by and would have liked to go, but there's no way my 74 year old theatre buddy could stand for more than a few minutes, let alone a few hours. We would happily have paid for somewhere to sit.

I am here.
Less stands than usual.
The longest queue I have ever been in; 90 minutes just to get in!
I fear this event has outgrown Trafalgar Square

I happened to walk through the square on Thursday evening. The staging area takes up a surprising amount of the space, and once you also take into account the various statues (and the sight lines behind them .. ), that huge fountain, the proximity of constant traffic and the rest of the street furniture, it's not good.
I did pause and wonder if the Aldwych might be an alternative once it's pedestrianised but not so sure about that, either.
Would closing and using Haymarket be the end of the world ...

Does anyone remember the days when it was in Leicester Square? Now that was crowded. Agree it has outgrown Trafalgar Square and we have had the discussion over the years on here about moving it to a park or larger venue but, I think, in the end it comes down to the fact that Trafalgar Square is in the middle of the West End and casts can walk there and then back to their theatres and people attending can be inspired and maybe grab a last minute ticket to see something in the afternoon or evening. It wouldnt be the same if it was somewhere like Hyde Park. I think the answer is as someone has just mentioned to make this a ticketed event to restrict numbers. I wont be going this year as I cant stand for too long and in the past have been lucky enough to be invited into the VIP area which is seated but there isnt one this year.
