A friend who has connections with Westminster usually gets me a ticket and it was him who said there was no VIP this year. I guess what he really meant was that he wasn't invited this time around or he's gone off me and given the ticket to someone else  |

I can’t stand to queue anymore. It turns what should be a lovely, relaxed day celebrating theatre into a military operation in which people who haven’t been queueing for the same 2 hours that I have are let it before me. And this year with checking covid passes (which is obviously the right thing to do) I imagine it was an even longer queueing process.
So again I stood in front of st Martin in the Fields and it was excellent. I could see the whole stage, hear 99% of everything and I wasn’t subjected to the inevitable super spreader event of cramming c50k people into Trafalgar Sq with about 4 masks between them.
I was there from the beginning, left after dream girls and enjoyed everything. So happy to see Jersey Boys back. They always manage to be my favourite and the most fun performance despite it not being my favourite show. I also appreciated how many more shows were in costume this year and really performed.
Hopefully it’ll encourage a lot of ticket buying.
And again, as I say every year, this now needs to be in hyde park.

In one of the small breaks between the performances, they screened a teaser for a new production to be announced in October (or November, I can’t remember). It was a black and white video of a woman in the backstage of a show, I think. I wasn’t paying it too much attention, but then Ruthie said the only hint she could give that that it was a Sondheim show which hasn’t been produced in a long while! Obviously that got me excited and curious. Could it be that the gods heard my prayers and A Little Night Music is coming back?

The checking of the covid passports was a joke. Someone by me had theirs checked and all was OK but just afterwards they realised they'd showed them their sky via code instead...
I enjoyed it but was very busy and I felt a bit anxious in the crowd. The atmosphere was fantastic though. Not sure I can stand all that standing again tomorrow as there's not really any shows on the line up I am desperate to see anyway.

Has BttF cancelled their performance at WEL tomorrow? Not sure it would look good for them to be refunding a weekend of tickets only to turn up in Trafalgar Square!

I can't say what a thrill it was to be around the West End yesterday; from the happiness and joy of the crowd for this event fanning out afterwards, to crossing Waterloo Bridge and Aldwych and seeing queue after queue after queue of theatregoers disappearing into .. Mama Mia, along Exeter St to The Lion King, The Play That Goes Wrong, Frozen at the refurbed Theatre Royal ... 7.15 pm and every theatre had a fast moving, well-managed queue! I got to the Opera House and it just more of the same. Place was packed to the rafters, wonderful production and plenty of foot stomping at the end. * Also the absence of the smell of urine and of what had become a semi-permanent tented community - possibly several reasons for that. Hoping that indicates not just a restart but a reset. A thoroughly uplifting experience |

Passion is definitely a marmite show. Do you all remember the wonderful production at the Donmar for Sondheim's 80th Birthday year, with Elena Roger heartbreaking as Fosca, and for which I think David Thaxton won an Olivier. It was stunning - this is a show that can work if done well. I can't really see Ruthie Henshall as Fosca, but am very prepared to be proved wrong! There can never be enough Sondheim for me!

I've watched a few clips, and carrying on from the CHF-uproar - did most of the performers struggle to hear the music?
I've seen some very meh-ish performances from shows and performers I love.
Every time I'm willing to come off the fence regarding Six, I get chased back on. I just don't warm enough to that show, and WEL didn't help.

I was put off by WEL a few years back with my late friend (Rest in Peace). All I remember is some lady with a strong Sahf Lahdahn accent shouting - literally shouting - and in no defined pitch "I'm the Queen of the castle, and you're the dirty rascal!". I said never, ever after that. Maybe it needed context! |

The sound on most of the clips on the London Theatre YouTube channel is absolutely all over the place. &Juliet dont come out of it unscathed, you can barely hear their backing track at all. However they got on with it, gave it plenty of welly and appeared to have a great time.
Unlike Amelie and that bizarre choice of songs… low energy and low volume.
POTO seemed to put the audience to sleep, not enough applause to fill the gaps between songs which was awks.
And if Carrie is worried she should have a look at the Choir of Man clip. Chaotic much?
