Ranvir. Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear. Stompy in all the wrong ways. Judges were being far, far too kind

Nicola was better that I had expected. Some decent moves. Just way short on performance skills

Bill. Yes... it was fun but lacking actual dancing

First half:
Jamie was dreadful and Karen can't choreograph.
Caroline was just a delight and her lines were exquisite. She is joyous and should go far, and I thought she was undermarked.
Max was stompy and I hated the routine.
Clara was enthusiastic but didn't see much cha cha cha.
Jacqui's Foxtrot technique was awful and they spent more time faffing around than dancing.
JJ was extremely charming and his basic waltz technique was pretty good. Karen and Dianne should take choreography lessons from Amy. Undermarked.

Hrvy was very strong. Jive for week 1 is a big ask and he nailed it

Is it just me, but Hrvy seems very 'leggy'? I noticed it in the launch show too.
It's not in any way a criticism; I mean, I thought he was brilliant tonight. It's just an observation.

Second half:
Maisie - I hated the routine and she spent far too much time standing still shimmying, so for me it was over marked, but there is no denying she can dance. The attitude in her face is a bit irritating though - just enjoy it rather than trying to be sassy.
Jason - his posture needs a ton of work but the Foxtrot footwork was excellent (a proper heel turn done well!!!), and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Ranvir - a bit stiff and needs to work on her posture, but it wasn't bad (though I don't think they gel as a partnership at all). A bit overmarked, but not helped by having to dance a Paso to music far more suited to a Samba...
Nicola - a bit scrappy and she needs to work on holding her posture (her centre needs to be pulled in and closer to Katya) but I enjoyed the switches between leading and following and she did those pretty well - it was the transitions into the parts out of hold that were the most messy.
Bill - Oti Mabuse is a genius, and that's about all there is to say. They are a fantastic partnership. Out of all the cha chas tonight, he was the only one where I noticed him trying to straighten his standing leg as he should (ok, he needs to turn his feet out and sort the other leg, but it's a start). A joyous routine and far more enjoyable than most of the rest tonight, Craig was too harsh.
HRVY - parts of it were good but his toes weren't always pointed and it was too big and loose in places. I found the whole thing irritating (as is their partnership) and thought it was overmarked. Nothing was close to deserving a 9 tonight.

Bill. Yes... it was fun but lacking actual dancing It wasn't really, there was plenty of proper cha cha content in that routine.

I didn't say there was a lack of content. I just didn't feel it was actually danced

Jamie: Enthusiastic and attacked it. Not brilliant, but ok for a week 1 pop/disco cha cha. Probably handicapped by his trousers, I can't see how you could straighten and flex your knees properly in those.
Caroline: Very theatrical. Looked very nervous, but danced nicely. Feet a bit turned out, but should be fixable. Not enough in hold to really judge that. Don't know why she was wearing Latin shoes.
Max: I was a bit put off by Diane's clip in fringe and peculiar dress! Looked quite good, hold will need some work. I could have done with it being a bit more stalky and catlike. I think switching between ballroom and Argentine tango might have made it harder for him to know how his hold and feet should have been.
Clara: Didn't need the disco section. I thought she was good at straightening her legs, and it looked good. I think enthusiasm overruled technique at some points, but that's not too much of a problem in week one. She was good at the disco bits, but didn't need them.
Jacqui: Better than I thought she'd be, but I think with Anton in a foxtrot you just hold on and let him steer! She looked nervous, but hopefully will be better now she's got the first one out of the way.
JJ: Proper waltz choreography (the literal choreography handshake was slightly cringey). I thought he did well, but need to tuck his pelvis under and bend his knees more so he can push off the standing leg and cover the floor a bit better. Amy had the best dress.
Maisie: It was very good, but some footwork was a bit dodgy and it headed alarmingly towards club-style dancing once or twice (knees apart and bending quite low). She performs well too. I'd put her in slightly higher heels, which should get her weight forward and make her look lighter in her feet.
Jason: I missed that it was a fusion, just thought he wasn't very good at some bits... The foxtrot looked nice, but he made the lifts look hard work. He seems lovely, but needs a better dance next week.
Ranvir: Drama and skirt did a lot of the work. The choreography didn't look that exciting, and she looked a bit stiff. I don't think they should do paso in week one really. (And Giovanni's hair was weird.)
Nicola: Endearing but a bit sloppy. Nice relaxed look from Nicola, but Katya looked manic alongside her and I think was counting for her and told her which foot to use at one point. I liked the lead-swapping, and the reversed costumes.
Bill: Needs to work on technique, but fab at hitting the beats. Another one hampered by over-tight trousers.
HRVY: Very, very good, but needed to point his toes. Lots of recognisable steps. Janette seemed to be dancing full throttle. Will be interesting to see his ballroom.

Nice analysis above by all. Just seems like the youngsters will be the ones getting through to the end. HRVY did a very good jive and yes he is leggy but that might be good for the ballroom, very svelte. I liked them all actually, so pleased to be actually doing the show of course and suitably humble 😂 as a lot of trouble has been taken to see this show work.

Nobody was really annoying ( apart from Tess, but that's a given) which is really unusual. Caroline better not cry next week or I could change my mind.

Although I thought that she tried extremely hard, my prediction for the first elimination will be Jacqui.

Well that was that...
Let's see if I can remember the dancers...
Max - wasn't bad but was not sharp enough. Nerves getting the better of him
Clara - was not keen on the choreo. Was not that well danced. Costume malfunction was a shame but the design really didn't do much for her.
Bill - great effort. A few clunky bits but done great bits too.
Maisie - I was bored. I tuned out. She is probably a decent dancer but she just isn't for me.
Jamie - was a big step forward and shows some potential
Jacqui - embarrassing. The swing was a clue as to how bad she is. Felt sorry fof her
JJ - Felt for him. Could see the effort but also the struggle. I think he is doing well. But this felt tough for him
Ranvir - flat footed. Pedestrian. Dull. Overmarked
Harvey (I like vowels) - some really lovely moments. He is a very natural mover. A finalist for sure.
Nicola - really lacking in actual dance content. Don't care about the story. Do care about the dance and there wasn't enough of it.
Caroline - a bit matronly. Not helped by the frock. She needs to stay around.
Jason - so much dad dancing. A tryer but not enough rhythm.
The judges seem to be being overly kind this year. More constructive feedback is needed.

The Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has confirmed that film and TV production, as well as elite sport, will be able to continue behind closed doors.
Well we may at least get the rest of the series, but who knows?!!

I appreciate that they weren't doing a Halloween special but when Hvy and Jannette started their routine, did anyone else detect a 'Wicked' feel to it?
He came out, dressed in green, carrying a lantern, under the drapes and when the green lights came on I thought they're gonna dance to 'As Long As You're Mine'.
Despite her trying, Jacqui was just (way) below par. The spectacular fireworks were just to dazzle the viewer and mask how poor she was.
I thought the CGI animals during Bill & Otti's routine was quote novel.
I think Karen has a job on her hands to rein in Jamie's enthusiasm.
Finally, given how grim everything is right now, isn't this a bright ray of light?

Caroline Quentin’s quizzical “I’m pissed off but I’ll try to look like I’m receptive to criticism” face was the treat of the night. Suspect she thought she was significantly better than she was.

Just caught up with the episode. Enjoyed it but hated the CGI overkill in the Dolittle dance:sometimes the effects work nicely but those animals looked naff and very glitchy around the edges that it cheapened things and detracted. Woman in White, all is forgiven!
Jacqui...err no: just keep her swinging! I also felt a Wickedesqueness to HRVY and JNTT’s number: my fave pair after Caroline and Johannes even though she didn’t really shine this time. But I really want to see a lot more of her.

Loved that Halloween pros dance! It was so good!! I loved the story between Janette and the fortune teller. How are we all front about the bottom two this week? I'll be honest, surprised that Jamie is in there, but I have a feeling that he'll be alright 🤞.

I really hate to be critical- it's so easy to be an armchair critic (I'm not out there in front of millions of viewers strutting my stuff- but as much as she may have enjoyed it, is it possible that Jacqui actually was worse in the dance off?
(With the occasional exception) Anton has been lumbered with some casualties over the years, has he not?

I think Jacqui was very poor. Had she put in the hours? Or was it that with fewer contestants, she looked worse against better ones? Maybe they had planned a couple of other doofers who got dropped. It isn’t a show for amateurs is it? The contestants need musicality and a level of fitness not to mention some body consciousness. It isn’t a weight loss programme like it used to be. So Bill has movement and music ability and by the sound of it works very hard. But he is also in the business and everyone in the business, dance classes as a kid or no, can ‘sell’ him/herself. Basic. And the sports guys are competitive to the extreme, hence their success in Strictly over the years. Without saying I think it is obvious who will be in the final and maybe even who will win.
