My dad has just come back from shopping in Iceland and Tesco - he said at least 8 customers had no masks in Iceland and at least three in Tesco. The Tesco has a security guard on the door not saying anything to people as they stroll in mask-less. There were about 30 customers in Iceland and 10 in Tesco.

It is being left to the public to decide whether they are eligible not to wear one or not. No-one knows who has a legit medical reason not to wear one, its not like the disability parking badge. The downloaded exeption badge anyone could do. Good idea to put disability on there as it may deter a few from flashing that. But can people not social distancing at political or celebration gatherings wearing masks complain about those who don't wear them in a shop etc.
It's almost the more who do wear them encourages others to do so and vice versa. Almost like some blokes have worn ties and others haven't o they decide to take theirs off as well or put one on.
Ironically anyone who may be doing something a bit dodgy is likely to waer one to reduce being recognised.

It's difficult really, one lady got on the bus I was on yesterday and immediately said very loudly that she had asthma and was unable to wear a mask, when she sat down another lady asked why she had said it so loudly and we discovered that she had already been shouted at and had something thrown at her for not wearing a mask. She was on her way to a friend's house who was going to print out an exemption thing for her to wear as she'd been so frightened. For every person with a genuine problem there are many who are either selfish/arrogant or who don't believe the masks make a difference but this is why I refuse to judge - and why many people I know have said they wouldn't be enforcing it if they worked in retail.
The whole situation is horrible, I just hope they can find a vaccine or at least some treatment that would mean a course of antibiotics would do the trick sooner rather than later

I think people need to get over this. Some people will comply, others won’t.
My opinion is that the mask wearing is being introduced not as protection from infection but as as a very visual reminder about the risk of infection.
If you go to France you can walk the streets without a mask, but will need one in a shop. Cross the border into Spain and you’ll be required to wear a mask at all times in the street, but can remove it when in a cafe, bar or restaurant.
in the UK we’re back to the France model again.
it’s all over the place, but the fundamental message is BE CAREFUL and a mask, regardless of the in-country rules is a very strong visual reminder of that.

This is where it gets so complicated. An asthma sufferer especially if older would be likely be in an at risk group so wearing a mask you'd think would be beneficial to them but their condition means it's not practical for them to do so. Also is the under 11 rule you could have some in year 6 need to legally wear one and others not. Also at that age a 9 or 10 year old can be bigger than an 11 or 12 year old. How would you enforce that. I'd think the logical rule would be those at secondary school do, those at juniors don't need to. At least easier to enforce when children are in uniform.

Some shops not bothering to enforce, some people not wearing cos of conditions or cos they are daft and the whys and wherefores not clear at all now and so police not going to arrest you, therefore the wearing of masks will become a fudge in that typically British fashion. If my little high street is anything to go by, most people not bothering to wear but having one hanging about them for going into shops.

No, it's not. The French government is advising its citizens not to travel to Catalonia. The border remains open.

The majority of people will wear them, a few won't - including people who have legitimate reasons to not wear them. Majority uptake should be enough to keep what is now a low transmission rate under control. I don't see any benefit to obsessive mask monitoring when you're out and about. I don’t believe in the argument that certain people have physical conditions and therefore exempt from wearing a mask. If you have a limiting physical condition which means you cannot wear a mask, then Covid is definitely not for you and will be dreadful for you in a nutshell if you catch it. So even more reason that people with physical conditions who are exempt from wearing a mask, need to definitely wear a mask. The only exceptions I can see are children under 4, the government says 11 though and people with psychotic mental illnesses. As they say if you don’t like wearing a mask then you won’t like wearing a ventilator.

Phantom of London You're absolutely free to think what you like, just as long as you don't hassle people who aren't wearing a mask when you think they should, but they and their doc disagree. The risk/benefit balance is for them to come to a conclusion about, not anyone else. The main long-term risk from covid to this country seems to be that we are turning into a nation of curtain-twitching Stasi informants.

Nearly everyone wearing masks in Sainsbury's this morning; out of fifty or so there were only two without. All the staff were wearing masks as well.

Yesterday I returned curtains to both IKEA and John Lewis but enough of my shopping habits... And tons of mask wearing in both. I could of taken mine off and it would be fine but I couldn't lit a fag or cracked open a can of beer.

Phantom of London The main long-term risk from covid to this country seems to be that we are turning into a nation of curtain-twitching Stasi informants. On this point, they should be allowed to put people at a much heightened risk without so much as a request? Other areas might be a lot better but not so much here, so it’s a postcode lottery. Is being asked if there is a reason that you are putting people at risk politely such an imposition?

The risk/benefit balance is for them to come to a conclusion about, not anyone else. I would not dream of hassling a stranger for not wearing a mask. That said, the point of wearing a mask is to protect other people FROM YOU, which means people who choose not to wear a mask are potentially putting other people at risk. That's incredibly selfish.

It depends how personal the reason - not everyone is prepared to talk about their health issues ( a pleasant change from those who do so incessantly!) and as I've posted before those who either have been or still are subject to abuse may well not be in a mental state where they can cope with those questions. The same as I am obese due to a medical condition yet have to go through the judgemental eyes of those who think I just eat junk food all the time without knowing my personal story thus I do my best to reserve passing judgement on others

For some their age will make it obvious as to why they shouldn't be forced to be around unmasked people but a lot is hidden. This is all one way at the moment, whereby people can claim why they can't wear a mask but those who need others to do so have no similar right. Telling people that you have a heart condition or are a careworker for example, isn't a threat, it is a plea for safety.

Mask usage around 75% at Westfield Stratford City today according to my dad with no signs of anyone challenging non wearers.

If it is anything like Scotland, day one is the worst with a distinct up tick on day two. People forget what day it is coming in, and are so used to popping in without thinking about it so mask wearing should be better today.

The BBC reported yesterday that this is expected by the travel industry cause job losses in the UK not only Spain.
I imagine it will cause a steep drop in people travelling anywhere on the safe list due to fear of their destination getting re added.

If TUI fold I might never get abroad again as my dad can't manage without a travel agent and package holiday.
How does Spain being temporarily reinstated on the UK quarantine list mean that you may never get to travel abroad again?
