Yet to be evidenced whether this is an overreaction to increased and targeted testing or a genuine uptick in cases - I guess hospital admissions/deaths in the next week or two will be the test. The testing capacity has been steady and the number of tests carried out for the last couple of months. If test and trace is working then hopefully it is indentifying those who may be positive. I agree the hospital numbers will be key but it coud be the younger and more gung ho people who may be infected now than those with health issues or elder people who are more likely to need hospital treatment and have a higher mortality rate.

Fans are in situ at Crucible as we speak. I'll check ITV racing at 1:30pm for Goodwood update.

@original Focused testing in areas like Leicester is likely to be finding asymptomatic cases that wouldn't otherwise have been spotted. If an increase in cases didn't result in an increase in hospital admissions/deaths, I'm not sure it's the worst thing in the world, especially given the rise in deaths we are going to see from other causes due to Covid - cancer outcomes in particular are looking pretty bleak right now.

One huge question looming over cinemas is the fact that the only money they make is from sales of food and drink, which obviously is not conducive to wearing a mask.
I'm glad it's being enforced but cinemas more than anywhere will be the hardest hit.

talkingheads Don't you just pull it down to have a bite/sip and then pull it back up again? Don't see why it would stop sales. Honestly, if it's like everywhere else, a significant number of people will have them discreetly under their chins anyway - especially if it's dark. I don't suppose cinemas are going to patrol mid-film checking for mask recusants.

I'd have thought doing that you may as well not wear the mask at all.

The mask is primarily to protect others from you - it gives only a very modest level of protection to you from them, so lifting it to have a drink is fine. Just don't go licking your fingers afterwards...

I'd have thought the number of people not touching their masks is vanishingly low - I've got mine stuffed into the bottom of bags and pockets all over the place, and I fish them out as I need them for shops, tube, etc, then stuff them back in. They're probably filthy.

I don't suppose cinemas are going to patrol mid-film checking for mask recusants. This is my absolute pet peeve! If you accept that you are wearing a mask to stop your spray going on other people's faces, other people's spray is going on yours too. It will not just be localised to where you are wearing the mask, it will be over your forehead and neck. When you wear your mask around your neck and chin you are rubbing the inside of the mask, that will then be touching your mouth, on a potentially infected area. I work in a hospital and we had specific training on donning, wearing and doffing masks given by our director of infection control who is a professor of microbiology. He said that there are *loads* of ways to make wearing a mask less safe than not wearing anything at all and this is one of them! I think masks are very important but along with the 'cover your face' message information should be given on doing this properly. You can eat and drink but should unhook the mask from one ear, hold onto it without touching the outside, eat/drink and then replace and sanitise your hands. Easily done if you do it properly. Anywayyy, now I've made myself seem crazy, I'll be off!

Sorry vickyg I didn't mean to push up your blood pressure - I'm describing not prescribing...! I do think that the problem with mask wearing is that the longer you're required to wear it, the less hygienic you're going to be. A 2 min walk through a pub to go to the loo? No prob. A two hour train journey - no chance I'm not fiddling with it, pulling it down to slurp some water, etc. Maybe there's a point where the balance of risk means it's better not to wear one than to wear it, but I guess it's hard to say where that is and even harder to communicate it.

Went to the cinema today for the first time in five months, it felt glorious! All staff were in masks, plastic screens at the popcorn counter and tickets were scanned on your phone.
Unhinged (we're all feeling it!) was a great film to come back with. High octane thriller, formulaic but lots of tension.

Statement from QDOS. It doesn't explicitly say 'all pantos are cancelled', but that's certainly the subtext:

Scottish theatres to reopen with social distancing from 14 Sept; hopefully will encourage BoJo and chums to try to match or beat that, or else look like Nicola Sturgeon has got a better grip on the situation than they have...

Beginning to think it'd extremely unlikely we're going to see theatres opening back up soon. If the talk is of the pubs closing again to compensate for schools going back then it's not going to be possible for theatres to open.

Well boris does like copying nicola Except English theatres will, fingers crossed, be allowed to reopen from 15 August. It was going to be the 1st until it was 'paused' at the last minute.

I would have loved to have been there tonight (and next week for Notflix) but alas, just saw the pic from following Crime Scene Impro on social media and thought it was interesting to see the set-up. Looks very civilised! Enjoy tomorrow, hope you'll share with us how you find it!
