If ALW's pilot proves successful, I wonder if other theatre owners or companies will be willing to come aboard for other pilots on venues that are smaller?
It would be interesting seeing how a pilot would work in places like The O2.

I imagine arenas will be the very last to return - and I can't imagine any socially distanced concerts happening so not sure if trials would be worth it.

First half was great! Interval now. Bit weird dancing with a mask but people up on their feet! ALW did a speech beforehand, saying how they need more government clarity asap and how important it is to have rhetaee without social distancing. Through I am not sure the goverment can offer clarity on that issue - and also it might be a double edged sword - no distancing might put off people who would go if the seat next to them was empty but not if everyone was cramped in and masks are being removed to eat or drink or simply for people's comfort - by the autumn mask wearing will be fading away if the current lax enforcement continues.

Thank you so much zahidf for despatches from the front line of entertainment! All hugely exciting and well done to ALW for pushing on to show what is possible.

I'm on the fence here. On the one hand, I thought what ALW and Beverly Knight did was wonderful, and I am so envious. I shed a tear just watching a clip on Twitter. On the other hand, the socially distanced seating looked so sad, as if most of the audience hadn't bothered to turn up (yes, I know that wasn't the case). Also, I can't see myself returning to the West End yet, as being over a certain age I can't risk two buses and a train to get there.

What part of 'cover your nose and mouth' doesn't Letts understand? Jeez what an idiot. I mean why was he even there if that’s his attitude. The whole point of today was to demonstrate safety measures. Good on FOH for not letting this selfish guy get away with it!

It's Quentin Letts, is anyone remotely surprised by this?

What part of 'cover your nose and mouth' doesn't Letts understand? There was one area of confusion. The rules said you could take your mask of while having a drink. I was told I had to keep my mask on in-between sips. So I complied I assume quentin was pissed that early on a Thursday so forgot

Drinking in a theatre while watching a decent play (preferably featuring SRB) is all I dream of...

All goos but Sadly I can't agree with the sentiment entirely - I don't think it is for the best for long away dates be strong targets when the pandemic is unpredictable and so many people in the country think it is already all over. They would be the temptation to allow un needed risks to be taken to avoid breaking the target even if it would increase the risk of infection beyond a reasonable level.

You've got to have trials to test whether measures can work like we've seen with the Palladium and also sports venues. Negativity doesn't solve issues, creativity does.

I think with arenas through the finances mean anything commercial non - sd would not be worth it.
It might be more viable if the BBC or ITV filmed arena shows to air and the audience can be trailed as part of it.

The pandemic could go on for years. We can’t all hibernate forever. If the safety measures are working in other countries then no reason they wouldn’t work here.

Sam Mendes apparently about to be on R4 to say that audiences have got to accept non SD seating if they want theatre to survive.

However I know many who wont feel confident enough to return without mandatory masks Mandatory masks wouldn't be an issue if people actually bothered to comply. Presumably the same people who won't feel confident without mandatory masks are the ones who are actually wearing them on public transport and in shops already rather than finding excuses not to?

I can wear a mask for an hour to shop, but for a two to three hours in a theatre? I'm not sure I'd go to the theatre if masks are mandatory, in your seat at least.

talkingheads Have you tried a light cloth one? I find them much more bearable, I ended up wearing it for about five hours non-stop on Sunday because my flight was delayed, and I didn't really notice it. They are probably not terribly effective in all honesty but they mean you're complying with the requirement in a way that's liveable with.

I say I couldn'y sit in a theatre, I'm sure if booking started up I'm so desperate to see something I'd go if you had to wear a mask, a visor and a hazmat suit!

I don't relish the idea of sitting in a theatre in a mask, but if that's what it takes that's what I'll do!
