Doctor Who under his tenure was only OK. The writing and storylines were full of deus ex machinas, especially the wolf thing. ie Dr Who since 1963.

Do you think Maxine Peak turned down the part of the politician?

Given there wasn't any improvement it's easy to ignore.

Given there wasn't any improvement it's easy to ignore. It’s clearly the improvement you’re ignoring.

Really? Queer as Folk? Bob and Rose? Bringing back a fifteen years gone sci fi show and building it into one of the most successful series in the world? Queer as Folk was a groundbreaking idea, but terribly written (and acted). Lesley Sharp generally brings her A Game which is why Bob and Rose worked at all. Doctor Who under his tenure was only OK. The writing and storylines were full of deus ex machinas, especially the wolf thing. As I say, groundbreaking, but that’s about all I can give him. Can I recommend his Casanova (was on BBC 3 around 2004/2005) - you may have already seen it. Off the wall and quite funny (and it turned David Tennant into a star overnight with teenage girls). Peter O'Toole gives a cracking performance too, along with a young Rose Byrne who knocks it out the park.

Davies’ ‘The Second Coming’ was excellent too, with Christopher Eccleston as a modern day son of God (the clue is in the title).

Davies’ ‘The Second Coming’ was excellent too, with Christopher Eccleston as a modern day son of God (the clue is in the title). I'd forgotten that! Especially forgotten that in was RTD's. It was excellent. I'm a former Doctor Who fan. RTD's time started really well imo. The Eccleston series and the first Tennant was mostly excellent. I got annoyed towards the end and though it was getting weaker, but it got a million times weaker after he left, and I'd far rather have him back- there were characters I really cared about and stories that shocked and/or moved me, so he was a success in my book. Anyway, I'm still thinking about part 1 of Y&Y a week later, and I'm looking forward to the next one. (I don't get the Russell Tovey love though! I liked his character's common sense and that he could see what was happening, but how on earth do people find him sexy?)

I like how he has set up the characters as being as diverse as possible (as a by product, also trolling those who profess to hate such difference). Given that this appears to be, as of episode one, looking at the dangers of reactionary populism in a rapidly changing world, the fallout could well be pretty incendiary.

The ending was very moving ("...she's here"). I agree, great stuff from PO'T. At that point, Tennant for me was "oh, it's him from The Pillowman" in which I'd really enjoyed his work. I thought he was very good in Casanova and subsequently delighted when cast as the Doctor. And oh my word Laura Fraser (which is my general reaction to her pretty much all the time anyway, admittedly). It feels like a somewhat overlooked, forgotten series.

Are we not talking about Years and Years? Should we go to aTennant thread? A few posts have gone more into general RTD opinions rather than Tennant. Fair enough in a thread about his latest series. I'm really looking forward to the next episode! (There you go).

Jessica Hynes would make the most sense. I'm sure Anne Reid makes it all the way to the last episode from what I've read.

I watched the first two episodes last night and was immediately hungry for more. Everyone in it is terrific. What's most disturbing to me is just how believable it all is. Has Mr Tovey ever been more charming? I don't think so or Mr Kinnear more believable? Great stuff!

Just caught up with episode 2 and it just gets better. If it was a box set I'd probably watch it all in one go but I do enjoy the fact that you have to wait a week to find out what happens next.

"Oh don't cry. I'm not going to give you a hug or anything." Anne Reid rocks.

This is exactly how I've been feeling in recent times. Kind of comforting to know that I'm not alone in this as Years and Years looks to explore this very issue.
