In terms of new musicals, we also have Roald Dahl's The Witches at the National this Christmas, don't we? Or is that going to be postponed again?
Also I wonder if we'll finally get Pride or Dennis The Menace at the Old Vic.

I actually think Groundhog was the obvious winner that year and the deserved winner considering the hype, the reviews etc. I agree though we need to see what the situation is with & Juliet but it doesn't seem like a show that is aimed at the older generation any more than Evan Hansen is on face value alone. That is exactly the point I am making. Groundhog Day didn’t have any pre-hype, I was there the same time as you in previews and we managed to snap up premium tickets for a mere £30, you had the press, with glowing 5 star reviews, then everything went mental and started selling out, Matthew Warchus and the producers went mad on that and the strength of a rave review in New York Times and fasttracked it to New York, which was fatal, where they should’ve built a bigger base here and transferred uptown. I know the Shaftesbury has its history and sounds familiar history musical as done before, but we cannot write this one off until we know something about it. It could be the one to see.

I had no idea that Adrian Mole was a (relatively) new musical. I thought it was a revival of the one from the 80s. The one from the 80s was at Wyndham's Theatre for a good run... I have the cast LP still, and it's, well, very 1980s... This is a new version created from scratch and works far better as it is situation rather than character led. I've heard most of the 80s one online. I really like it!

Ah, but the brand names, Tizer, Atari, Farrah etc, LOL. I like the reference to Channel 4 in "Oh Pandora" Apparently Channel 4 was a new TV channel in the 80s and was seen as quite highbrow or something!

Joseph will be an interesting one to see how it does with nominations. I imagine the three announced leads so far will likely get nominations, especially Sheridan as she is an Olivier's favourite. The show has never really been an Olivier's favourite in the past has it? I imagine it will get a couple of nominations at least.

I’m shocked the 2003 production was nominated was it was the cheap tour version. Unless this production is radically different, I don’t see it being nominated

I'm curious, on the Lee Mead note, I find it interesting none of the winners of those reality TV shows have ever been nominated for an Olivier, nor have any of the contestants at all until Rachel Tucker this year. I thought Connie Fisher, Lee Mead, Jodie Prenger and Danielle Hope (the shows that would of been Olivier eligable) all got great reviews for their performances. I can understand why Danielle never got nominated because Dorothy isn't that great a role, but the other three are classic musical theatre roles. Were Connie, Lee or Jodie ever predicted to get nominated? Or did they never stand a chance?

Don't forget that Imelda Staunton (of all people) was nominated for an Olivier for playing Dorothy in the late 80s for the RSC production, so with the right actress, like any role, it can be an award-worthy part... I think the Oliviers just held a kind of snobbery towards those reality TV casting shows, and so never bothered to nominate those individual performers... they actually nominated other aspects of the productions from time to time (Oliver! and The Wizard of Oz were both up for best revival for example). In New York, the Tonys are such a big deal commercially for producers, and so the time frame for shows opening is completely different to London, where the Oliviers don't really have any relevance to a show's lifespan... I find it interesting in terms of how the judges remember performances and productions a year later, and are willing to award some of the already closed shows in some cases. The Fiddler revival comes to mind this year, where it is definitely an Olivier-friendly show, so it will be interesting to see how it fares next year.

Unless the Chocolate Factory counts as an eligible venue (which I don't think it does), then yes because it is new to London, just as Dreamgirls was despite the fact it has been in other places over many years.

She moved onto presenting and is also now a development executive for a TV production company.

The Society of London Theatre's board has announced changes to the voting procedures and some categories at the annual Olivier Awards. The changes, which will go into effect at the 2020 awards, include the exclusion of the Best Comedy, Best Entertainment, and Family categories. The three groupings will now be merged into two categories, Best Entertainment or Comedy Play and Best Family Show. The 2020 awards will mark the first time youth theatre will be recognized in its own category at the Olivier Awards. Family productions will now be judged by a panel of ten people, made up of five adults and five children. Three of the pairs will include theatre professionals, and two will be comprised of members of the general public. I imagine Hairspray will be eligable as per Sunset etc getting nominated as it is a revival but as its apparently going to be a recreation of the original production, only the new elements will be considered. So Michael couldn't be nominated again for example.
