They were both very good but Regina King's performance was by far the best in that category this year, it would have been ludicrous if she didn't win (and was ludicrous that SAG and Bafta didn't bother nominating her). Thoroughly deserved win (and Weisz and Stone both already have Oscars anyway). |

Well well, the Academy does like a shock after all! Wonder what poor Glenn Close has done to her fellow actors? It wasn't really a shock - Colman was the front runner or joint front runner for a while, and although a lot of people expected Close to get it purely for the overdue factor, Colman's was generally thought to be the better performance. Certainly not a Juliette Binoche level of shock that's for sure. |

Olivia's speech was everything! So sweet, emotional. I love that she said how much she loved Glenn and that this wasn't how she wanted it to turn out. I also found it hilarious as Olivia walked near Gaga, Gaga is just stood there with her already won Oscar. 😂

Olivia's speech was everything! So sweet, emotional. I love that she said how much she loved Glenn and that this wasn't how she wanted it to turn out. I also found it hilarious as Olivia walked near Gaga, Gaga is just stood there with her already won Oscar. 😂 I agree, it was a genuinely delightful speech from a genuinely delightful woman for a glorious performance. The Glenn bit was a lovely touch and a well deserved standing ovation from the audience. Nice to see Spike Lee win a competitive Oscar too 29 years after his first nomination - both times when 'Driving Miss Daisy' won Best Picture strangely. Poor Glenn though. She wore a gold frock too. Bet that'll be on eBay this morning. |

i Have never seen a review for BR give a rave review . Why on earth is it nominated? Why did 'The Favourite' not win. Emma Stone was excellent by the way there is more piss in this oscars. then there is in my toilet. It won for Rami Malek, who received pretty much universal acclaim, and in several technical categories (unsurprisingly given the feat of sound engineering involved). The Oscars is about the achievement in terms of the craft and nothing to do with reviews. The Favourite didn't get universal acclaim either. And while Emma Stone is very good in it, Regina King was better in Beale Street. The acting performances are only one part of the overall picture, same reason Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody won a lot of technical awards but not the overall prize. Also there are much more pleasant ways to dole out criticism than your rather unnecessary comparison... |

Hmm, the Oscars are theoretically about achievement in terms of craft, but are actually about politics, personalities and campaigning. Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek played an absolute blinder in all those departments - they managed to craft a campaign narrative about the little film saved from the bad behaviour of its evil director (who no-one mentioned if they could at all avoid it!) by the efforts of its cast and crew. Plus, everyone wants to give Freddie Mercury an award! The film itself is an entertaining experience to watch if you sit back and go along with the ride but it's not an example of great film craft - though it is an example of how well Queen songs work as part of a film soundtrack! I expect they'll be popping up on a few more film soundtracks over the next couple of years. However, once you actually start to think seriously about how it portrays events some of the more problematic elements jump out at you. Much like Green Book - if you learn about what has been altered or left out or manipulated for cheap sentiment the very entertainment value of the experience becomes a bit troubling. But that's an ethical issue, and film awards are definitely not about ethics. |

Not to take anything away from the winners, but standing ovations at the Oscars are de rigueur for ALL of the major categories as again evidenced last night.

That's only because the US sites have done nothing but talk up Glenn Close for the last month, and Colman didn't turn up to the SAG Awards. Immediately after the Globes the talk was of it being a two-horse race, then the media started buying into the "it's Glenn's time" narrative. If anyone had bothered to step back slightly it was entirely obvious that it was still between both of them, regardless of what the media said. They pretty much evenly split the preceding awards and The Favourite was clearly well liked given the number of nominations it got. So maybe it was a surprise to those who took all the press at face value, but that's their prerogative. Green Book winning was a bit of a shock, but I don't think even that was entirely surprising if you think about the preferential vote system and the fact that Roma was also in the foreign language category. |

Well we all know that the Oscars are a bit of fluff and some frankly awful frock choices but let's take a moment to applaud the resilience of actress Selma Blair (and millions of others like her) who made her first red carpet appearance at the Vanity Fair Oscar party since revealing her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) recently. Clearly struggling with walking and dressed like she just left an ice cream parlour, Selma absolutely rocked a walking cane and even made the paparazzi stop and clap, which is an achievement in itself.
I defy you not to find something in your eye. Selma Blair is 46. Yes, just 46.
