purely because she's considered "overdue" (Close). Yes, the SAG win hasn't harmed her chances at all, but Colman is almost certain to get the Bafta so it really doesn't make Close a lock yet - I think it's the only acting category that still can't really be called. Close has a slight edge now, but is by no means certain yet. Simply not the case. Glenn Close received outstanding reviews for The Wife and it is considered to be one of her best 2 or 3 performances in her career. Olivia Colman might be hampered by the fact that her performance is a supporting one, and BAFTA is far too parochial and too much it’s own beast to be considered a more accurate precursor than SAG. And they frequently nominate some really quirky/(undeserving) performances (Ziyi Zhang in MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA?!) and ignore others. I fully expect Colman to win BAFTA and Close to win Oscar. Best Picture has been a fun race since they expanded they allowed more nominees, that’s for sure.

Caught Mary Queen Of Scots this week and was a little surprised it's two lead actresses have not featured in more awards conversations, although Margot Robbie was up for SAG and BAFTA. She's certainly the stronger of the two, possibly because of less screen time. Considering how impressive she was in I, Tonya last year she is becoming a definite name to look for in film credits. I wonder if The Favourite took up all the Royal room this year?!
Must confess to getting a little tired of the Amy Adams 'overdue' narrative. Much as I like her and think she's talented, she's barely 20 years into her career and has been lucky with some of her previous Oscar nominations. She was fabulous in Junebug and probably should have won for that but her other 5 nods seem to have benefitted from being in very all round strong casts (Doubt, The Master, American Hustle)Taken in isolation, in my opinion not all of these performances are worthy.

All 90 seconds of it because apparently that's all we're getting of each of the nominated songs!

But it is only about 90 seconds worth of song, so what's the problem?

Yes, I know, it was a joke based on the fact that even the complete version still sounds like an unfinished draft.

Yeah, that song only actually has one verse and a chorus!
Shame that the others are only getting 90 seconds too.

I imagine if the dream of Julie Andrews happened to come true, they will leave her onstage as much as possible, because it would be legendary to see her sing again and in that role too. If they only gave her 90 seconds, I'm sure the standing ovation would last the length of the rest of the number anyway. If that performance happened, watch it be followed by a commercial break. 😂😂

I just caught Can You Ever Forgive Me last night and it's a real shame Richard and Melissa haven't picked up any steam this awards season. The film itself it's great, but my god, both of them are giving true rollercoaster, transformative performances and I loved them for it. I really enjoyed every second.

Finally settled down and watched A Star Is Born on Sunday night.I found it to be quite breathtakingly average. I can see why it has been nominated for awards but isn't really bringing home the bacon as it isn't really doing anything new (the almost pathological obsession with it on the award site Gold Derby is mystifying) I really don't think it helps that I've seen all 3 previous versions and so it's very familiar too. I can understand fresher eyes than mine being able to see its strengths.
I will say that the last five minutes were breath taking in another way, with Lady Gaga tearing up the screen in that final number. She was outstanding, if only that level of emotion and drama had been throughout the film. Lady Gaga has been the only good thing in a couple of recent Oscar ceremonies with her Sound Of Music medley and her performance of Till It happens To You, which made me a fan of hers from feeling pretty ambivalent about her. She clearly has the talent to deliver, let's hope she gets some more good roles.
But 'Shallow' as best song? And much as I love me some Sam Elliot, Best Supporting really?

Don’t actually start thinking about the quality of this year’s nominees - that way madness lies! There’s some truly shocking choices.

Went to see this film and wasn’t sure what to expect but came out having thoroughly enjoyed it (laughter and a few tears - sign of a great film!). Both performances are excellent, Melissa so different from her usual type of roles but can we just give Richard E Grant an award for how lovely he is and clearly loving every minute of awards season?! If you don’t already follow him on Instagram then I’d recommend it.

Saw Vice last night. It’s a very good, well-made film. That shot of the Piccadilly line sign and then the tube carriage was a punch in the gut for me.
Bale’s performance is outstanding.
But I still don’t think the academy are going to go for it. I don’t think they have the stomach for it this year - it’s a film that leaves you seething without putting fire in your belly.

I think the tide may be turning in favour of Rami Malek over Christian Bale now.

The annoying thing about that is I’m now convinced that Rami Malek actually isn’t that good! The voice in particular is all wrong, and the more I’ve found out about Freddie the less I think he caught his personality too. He’s just not funny enough, and - I know this sounds weird - he’s too camp in the offstage scenes.
It’s mainly the script’s fault, though. The script is genuinely terrible.

Grant's social media charm offense is getting him a lot of publicity. Considering the controversy of DRIVING MISS DAISY 2 and that it has not done extremely well at the box office, if Grant wins BAFTA he could be in with an outside chance to beat Mahershala Ali.

I quite enjoyed the film when I watched it but don't think I can look at it the same way now.............

Saw Mary, Queen of Scots the other week, very mixed opinions. It 100 percent deserves the two noms for hair/makeup and costume design! However Margot gives a breathtaking, human and really original take on the iconic role of Elizabeth I, she freaky dedicates and transforms into that role. I thin kshe deserved a nomination in best supporting actress! She got one for the BAFTAs.

If anyone deserved a nomination from that film it was Saoirse Ronan in my opinion - Margot Robbie was very good in a couple of scenes but otherwise I didn't think her performance was anything particularly special, and the fact that she got a BAFTA nomination over Regina King is a joke!

I don't think either Ronan or Robbie deserved any kind of nomination for that film. Granted it looks gorgeous but seriously it's like an extended episode of 'Hollyoaks' with long frocks.

I sort of agree with you on the hollyoaks front SPOILER ALERT I thought the film would have been much better if it were not for the soap opera esc, completely inaccurate and unrealistic gay story line they tried to shoe-horn in, in order to make the film more topical or modern, i suppose? It really dampened the whole thing and took me and my friends out of the movie.

Rachel Weisz has won the Supporting Actress BAFTA as expected. Remedying the wrong from the time she was inexplicably placed in Lead Actress for The Constant Gardener despite winning every Supporting Actress award going elsewhere!

I caught a late night showing of Boy Erased last night. A real shame Lucas Hedges kinda fell off the radar for a nomination, I thought he was phenomenal in that film. There is a couple of scenes in that film that will be seared into my mind for a while to come, and in large part it was because of his amazing performance. I guess, because of the busy field of nominees, he just fell to the wayside sadly, but he would of been just as deserving as some of the other Actors.
