Bale, Ali, Close and Adams probably have the acting awards already sewn up.
I suspect Roma will walk off with best picture and they'll give director to Lee.

Regina King has it in the bag with Supporting Actress as of right now, but SAG may tell a very different story and push Amy out front. I'd love to see her win. |

I think only Ali has it sewn up in the slightest, and even then Sam Eliott might snatch it. The rest of the acting categories are clear two-horse races: Bale/Malek, Close/Colman and Adams/King. None of them easy to call at all yet, though the SAG awards are this weekend so things might change then in the first two (King inexplicably isn't even nominated so Supporting Actress won't be any clearer). |

Timothee is a shock omission though. Seems like Sam Elliott sneaked the nomination from Timothee for 'A Star is Born'. He could end up winning it, the Academy love someone like him. I'd pick Sam Elliott over Timothee, to be honest. That one scene in the car was devastating. |

If Beale Street could Talk not getting a best picture nomination was a surprise but I wonder if the Academy felt due to Black Panther and Green Book, they didn’t want a third African American based film

Mary Queen of Scots got shut out completely. Animation wise, it should go to Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse. Mary Queen of Scots got Costume Design and Hair and Makeup Design. I'm so happy for Josie Rourke! |

The Academy really do love to give an award to someone like him, respected and well liked actor who has been in the business for decades and never had a nomination. I had Mahershala Ali down as the winner for this category (and he's pretty much cleaned up so far this awards season) but I do think if anyone is going to sneak it away, it could be Elliott. As for the rest, I think it's Christian Bale, Glenn Close and Regina King. There would be uproar if it was an all-white clean sweep again so I really don't think Amy Adams will win over Regina King plus King is supposed to be absolutely glorious in the film anyway so it would be well deserved. I think Amy Adams may end up being one of those eternal losers at the Oscars despite multiple nominations. |

I guess that 'Blank Panther' is also very much a landmark movie though so that probably helped it's journey to a nomination.

Delighted about Mary, Queen Of Scots's nomination for hair and make-up, it's nice to see James McArdle's beard being officially recognised by the academy.
Not super impressed with the rest of the nominations though, it all seems a bit... bland overall, though at least Black Panther and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse are getting some props. (I'm not a major Marvel fan, but these two are going an awfully long way towards justifying the absolute abundance of superhero flicks we're currently suffering from.)

I think the country itself is the winner of Best Foreign Film even though the director is the one that usually accepts it (and I think it's the director's name on the award) but the director isn't the actual winner. |

TBF superhero films are a big moneymakers at the moment which is why there is loads of them out there. |
