Having just seen Mary Queen of Scots, I think it's a huge shame Saoirse Ronan isn't getting much recognition, she is outstanding. She wouldn't have won, but she deserves a nomination, though won't get it.
On the other hand, I can't understand at all why Margot Robbie got a Bafta and SAG nomination for this - she is decent in the last 15 minutes but otherwise I didn't think her performance was anything special.
It's Ronan's film, but at least she is young enough to hopefully have many more chances to get the awards recognition she so deserves.

Well the nominations come out on a Tuesday, screened on the website, YouTube, on all that good stuff come 13:20 UK time.  I want to make a cheeky few changes to my predictions on the first page of this thread. I'm bumping out Willem Dafoe from Best Actor and putting in John David Washington. I'm also feeling a bit shaky about Emily Blunt for Best Actress, I just have a bad feeling so may switch her for Yalitza Aparicio. The other one I'm nervous about is I don't think Margot Robbie is going to get in anymore for Supporting Actress, so I'll switch her for Claire Foy or (go with me on this one), Emily Blunt for A Quiet Place. I don't know why, I just have a feeling. Go with me on it. 😂😂 |

Didn’t want to start a new thread but saw a preview screening of Can You Ever Forgive Me? this evening and thought it was excellent with two very strong lead performances. It’s a shame that Melissa McCarthy has missed out this awards season (just assuming she won’t get an Oscar nod on Tuesday, which is a shame) but fingers crossed for Richard E Grant, especially at the BAFTAs he should have a good chance. The film was actually quite funny and then also moving in places, would definitely recommend it.

She has been nominated at the four major award shows (Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG and Critics Choice) which points to all signs of an Oscar nomination at the very least. I'd be shocked if she didn't get a nomination. It's just a shame she is apparently giving an amazing performance yet she's not gonna win. |

The issue is too, alot of people raved very early on about Melissa, some experts etc predicted her to win for a moment, but then Gaga and Olivia opened their films and she was kinda pushed to the wayside. It will be Gaga, Olivia or Glenn, but Melissa is undoubtedly the dark horse of this competition. |

I hope they are better than last year. It was embarrassing to see presenters who could not pronounce the names of actors/directors/producers etc. And who seemed to revel in their lack of courtesy to the nominees.
I appreciate that unfamiliar names/languages can be difficult. That is why you prepare, learn and rehearse.

My fingers, toes and spirit are crossed for just a nomination for Emily Blunt. I fear she may not get either now, but a nomination for Mary Poppins Returns or A Quiet Place, she is way overdue a first nomination.  |

I'm more disappointed for Timothee but the film doesn't have the buzz that some of the other nominees have sadly. Emily was never going to get a nomination in that category, it was too tough.

Timothee is a shock omission though. Seems like Sam Elliott sneaked the nomination from Timothee for 'A Star is Born'. He could end up winning it, the Academy love someone like him. |

Only one song from A Star is Born and one from Mary Poppins - no split votes for them to worry about, so it will be interesting to see who takes it (I expect it will be ASIB).
No real surprises in Best Actor. Slightly surprised Emily Blunt misses out entirely, but Roma has momentum and Poppins doesn't, and there's plenty to dislike about Blunt's performance too.
Shocked Bradley Cooper misses out on a Best Director nod.

I am not sure that The Favourite is going to win much outside of the creative side of things. It would be great if it did, but in most categories, it seems to be up against contenders with greater momentum. So most nominations but few actual trophies. But we shall see.

Right so let's look into this.
The three big snubs for me that immediately stand out are Timothée, Emily and Bradley for Director. Especially Emily, but that's mainly because I feel she has been long overdue a first nomination, and she has two Oscar-worthy performances and they opt to not put her there.
I think Roma is locked in to win now. Bradley Cooper's snub has sealed that fate.
I'm surprised at the amount of Black Panther nominations, but maybe that's just me.
Shocked but thrilled at the love for Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite, but am stunned Rhapsody got into Best Picture. Not that I'm complaining, but stunned!
Glad Mary Poppins Returns and A Star is Born got a good amount of love, and that Sam Elliott got in even if at the expense of Timothée although from what I've heard Sam Rockwell is the one who shouldn't really be in that catagory.
Very mixed feelings this year.

I think Bradley Cooper getting best actor nom will sweeten not getting nominated for best director but he’ll have other opportunities which might be the Academy’s thinking
Stan and Ollie got no nominations either although having seen the film, it’s good but it’s not a very showy film

I actually think Bradley Cooper not getting a Director nomination is the biggest snub of that lot. Emily Blunt was always the long shot for Best Actress (there was never going to be a nomination for Supporting Actress) so I can't help but think that as much as I liked her in Poppins (and I like her generally) it's not really a snub that she didn't get a nomination. I also don't really think she's given a performance before this that warranted a nomination so I don't think she's overdue one either at the moment. |
