Couldn’t see a thread for this so thought I’d start one.
According to WhatsOnStage this morning Glenn Close was interviewed at The Emmys stating that filming will start in September this year for 2020 release date.
It appeared on my Facebook thread this morning.
Alas I am at work and posting this from my phone so can’t copy the link.

I'm really rather excited about that to be honest. As is Glenn. I see she's put in her Amazon order in preparation . . . Just joshing, Glenn is looking FAB-U-LOUS and her reaction to her Golden Globe win last night was priceless. Joan Crawford called though. She wants her shoulder pads back.

Sunset Boulevard is a musical. With the low notes and the high notes and the sweeping score innit.
If it HAS to be someone 40 years older than the character, then Patti LuPone IS Norma Desmond.
The end. Thank you for your time.
(PS - how many times has this film been about to be made!?) (PPS - seriously though, just cast someone new)

Just wait for the announcement of Zac Efron as Joe... One of the many ways they could balls this up. Like the potential 'new song' it doesn't need. Or the probable overzealous use of special effects. Very excited for this, but not entirely hopeful. Hated Phantom and Les Mis movies.

Just wait for the announcement of Zac Efron as Joe... Would that really be so painful? Jackman is too old for it now, none of the Glee boys have come to much musically...(.although Darren Criss could possibly do it) if it gets the movie made I think it’s a small sacrifice.

Jake Gyllenhaal or Chris Pine would be good. Zac Efron actually wouldn't be bad, he has done some really interesting work on the indie side.

I think Glenn Close can not act through song, but she acts in spite of song. Which separates the singing from the acting, which results in insincere acting. Hugh Jackman does this too. They do not understand the nuances of acting through notes and that notes are actors too and that 3 different colors in 1 note evoke an emotion and that there is no need to over-emote/act out every word on top of the singing.
This is an example of a perfectly acted "With one look". Every little detail makes sense. Her first "all you need to know" is so gentle, hopeful, yet delusional, it is the epitome of acting trough song. Glenn Close does not understand any of this.
As for the role of Joe, I think there are 2 suitable candidates out there, Michael Xavier or Patrick Wilson.

Dear lord what a terrible vibrato.
Michael was OK not great. Patrick Wilson is too old. At least Glenn will be able to record her songs in the booth to make up for her live singing.
Now since for Sunset Blvd. they went from a tux to a speedo does that mean nude now?

God Michael Xavier was terrible, he can't act and Patrick Wilson wasn't great in Phantom so no desperate rush to see him in a musical again. Ironically his non singing roles have been much better

Thing is, when you're casting someone over 70, you cannot have a Gillis in his 30's - it's too unseemly (even if the character is meant to be early 30's)
So Patrick Wilson might work.

Not enough Betty - especially when a really good actor is in the role. During the ENO production myself and a lot of friends found myself really rooting for her and connecting with her far more than we'd done in other production, given the underwritten nature of the role.
Less is more with Norma D. x

Quite possibly. My issue with Efron being cast as Joe is the over-processing and ridiculous amount of Auto-Tune that goes onto Efron vocally. Sunset Blvd is not a movie that needs to be smothered in Autotune. Boulvard is not going to be a Box Office smash (or comparable in figures to say Disney movie musicals) and should not be treated as such. Anyone who went to the recent UK tour can attest to the depleting numbers of attendance, indicating its diminishing appeal. By-and-large it wont appeal to Generation Z and casting Efron in an attempt to add curb appeal to this production would be (in my opinion) entirely misguided. Unless the intention is to write of a hell of a lot of cash for tax purpose, spurting megabucks on A-Lists (with the exception of Close) is not a good idea.

As a financial venture it’s dead in the water unless Netflix or someone is coughing up...maybe spread the costs across a zillion producers who want their name associated with a bit of quality.I just think that Efron, Jackman and Chris Pine are the only current proven male musical leads we have.

You’ll not be saying that when Ariana Grande is riffing her way through Too Much In Love To Care ☹️

But the relationship between Norma and Joe is rather unseemly anyway so I don't think that would matter so much. Plus Glenn looks great for her age I think so it's not unreasonable to have a Joe in his 30s. Hollywood is littered with older men and younger women ('Entrapment' anyone?), there's no reason why Glenn shouldn't get it on with a young stud muffin.

I'm dream-casting Cheyenne Jackson for Joe. It'll never ever ever happen in a million years, he's not a name, but he'd be dreamy and would sing the stuffing out of it 😍
