Unusually for me, no breakfast at home today. Instead a bacon and egg flatbread from a cafe in Waterloo station and an orange juice, taken into work and eaten at my desk.

For a change, breakfast out at the IronBar, Squatney Downs. Devastated avocado on randomised charcoal sourdough sprinkled with sublimated acerbic bean seeds, with an erlenmeyer of durian and oblique fern juice.

Well you often see 'crushed' avocado. Devastated avocado is the next tier of distress up. In either case, we can only guess what might be the cause of their upset. I think I've also seen 'traumatised avocado' but I'm not sure where they are on the spectrum of disruption.

Porridge, because yesterday I was walking through the supermarket and suddenly thought it might be nice to have porridge for breakfast.
I forgot that porridge swells up a bit in the microwave so it was an anxious few minutes peering through the glass watching the level rise towards the lip of the jug. Spillage averted, but only just.

I think *we* need more information from all you porridge eaters.
Milk or water?
Sugar or salt?
There is actually a World Porridge Making Championship, held annually in Carrbridge in the Scottish Highlands.

Milk or water? Sugar or salt? Milk, and neither. I once tried making porridge with water following a moderately successful experiment with a milk/water mix. It was like eating wet oats, mainly because that's exactly what it was. I like porridge with sugar, but I like enough sugar that it melts together to form a deliciously sweet crust on top of the porridge. Awareness of calories stops me doing that these days, unfortunately.

Porridge. I soak the oats in milk overnight, then as I start heating them in a pan, will if necessary top it up with hot water from the kettle. It doesn't usually need much, and I like my porridge on the thick side but not cuttable. At the end of cooking I'll stir in a small drizzle of maple or agave syrup.

I like porridge with sugar, but I like enough sugar that it melts together to form a deliciously sweet crust on top of the porridge. Awareness of calories stops me doing that these days, unfortunately. That's why I gave up having porridge regularly. I only find it palatable with large quantities of brown sugar on it & I reckoned the unhealthiness of that was worse than the healthiness of the oats. On the odd occasions I do still have it then it has to be made with milk. Which is kind of odd when I think about it given I can't bear milk on its own & only drink water.

With milk and either sliced banana and honey or with a dollop of homemade apple and ginger jam to sweeten it.

I have been felled by a chest infection so I indulged and ordered breakfast from Ottolenghi, via Deliveroo. Fruit salad, Greek yogurt and nutty granola. I am going back to bed now.

And mummy bear said "who's been eating my porridge?" And baby bear said "who's been eating my porridge?" And daddy bear said "stuff the porridge, where's my iPad?" A favourite line from the original radio Fist of Fun, a spoof of Goldilocks - "Look, I'm not being funny but, I think someone's been sitting in my chair. Though how I'm quite so sure, I don't know."

Toasted cinnamon and raisin bagel, the usual cup of tea. (One day, someone will pick up on that reference. They must!)

Today I got up at around 1 p.m. and got a toasted egg bagel with whitefish salad, spinach, and red onions. YES.

A slice of leftover Christmas Cake and a coffee. Usually I can make that damn cake stretch out until March time.

Nothing. After the last couple of weeks I need to lose some weight so I'm cutting down on meals. (It doesn't help that the meal I had at a restaurant yesterday was so large I suspect the kitchen overlooked a "serves eight" on the recipe.)
I hope to get back to porridge in a few days.

Peach and pecan museli
1 boiled egg white (I know the yolk contains all the nutrients but the cooked proteins make me unwell)
1 piece frozen mango

Skipping meals all together is a really good way to convince your body that there's a famine on and it needs to cling on to every ounce of fat for dear life. Surely it would make more sense to eat smaller portions of all the usual stuff...
Almond croissant and a cup of tea for me, breakfast of champions!
