Really disappointed to hear that Sandra Marvin will be playing Deloris on tour. I saw her twice in Hairspray years ago and then recently in Waitress, I don't rate her voice and find her very nasal and difficult to understand.

The Craig Revel Horwood version? That's the one. With Alexandra Burke (couldn't understand a word she said), and for some reason, nuns playing instruments. Awful.

For an awful performance, she & the show picked up some decent reviews.

You can't go on what the papers say about shows as they have been given free tickets and perhaps advertising money etc. and are not exactly impartial.

The CRH version was the only show where I was very tempted to leave at the interval but for me Alexandra wasn’t the issue; poor casting elsewhere and just a general misfiring of the production was enough. I did stay and the second act picked up a bit, but a shadow of the joyful production at the palladium.

Well I saw it in August ‘16 and at that point (I think Manc was the second stop on the tour) she couldn’t reach the higher notes without a very apparent struggle and her acting was basic to say the least. It doesn’t surprise me that months later she was doing much better, because practice does indeed make perfect. Im a fan of AB, I think she’s got a great voice and I like watching her but she has her limitations. She struggled with some of those big notes in The Bodyguard too.

I like Alexandra Burke but it was the idea of the nuns playing musical instruments that put me off.

Really interesting reading the comments on here about the Alexandra Burke touring production. That’s the only version of Sister Act I’ve seen and I saw it in Southampton in June 2017. I really wasn’t blown away, even though I thought she was great in The Bodyguard and Joseph. Perhaps it was the instrument-playing nuns or something else I still can’t put my finger on, but I just didn’t overly enjoy it.
I’ve booked for the Hammersmith Apollo version now, primarily based on the amazing cast they’ve lined up, so I’m hoping this new production delivers some of the magic you guys have described the original Palladium production had… fingers crossed!

I don’t think so really. There’s only one song they sing really before Raise Your Voice (How I Got The Calling/It’s Good To Be A Nun), and that depends on the production as to how they interpret it.

Chess, Fiddler and particularly Sunset Boulevard were all absolutely terrific. I really like his directing. Additional: I know from people who work with him that he can be a little catty if things aren't being done his way. The key seems to be standing up to him, he respects strong personalities. Also, his style is very visual, he blocks everything out to an aesthetic he has in mind, and fills the gaps later, which is actually very old-school musical theatre/opera directing. He doesn't get too involved with performance notes, unless he is going for a particular "moment" i.e. "Too Much in Love to Care" in the Watermill production. He works very, very closely with a lovely lady whose name escapes me temporarily, who is by his side constantly discussing ways to get the instruments around the stage, who needs to be free to play what, etc.

He really does. It ruined Chess for me. Didn’t see his Fiddler. But don’t the folks in Anatevka have enough issues without being forced into a klezmer band ?
