I went to the open air Minack Theatre on Tuesday to see the Surrey Opera production of Don Giovanni.
The actors wore steampunk inspired outfits (suede jackets, top hats, corsets etc) and it was 24°C. Mild compared to the rest of the country but still quite hot.
Some of the audience had to leave at interval as they couldn't handle the heat. Granted I did get burnt, but I enjoyed it very much. Plus the sea breeze helped and by Act 2, as the sun went down, we had shade for most of the second half.

An amazing setting for a theatre though on the cliffs and the the lovely gardens |

Many years ago I was in Murmansk which is above the artic circle in January. It was -40c and dark for 24 hours. You couldn't stay outside for more than about 15 mins. Breath froze to your lips and we went tabagoning. I have been to places where it was -40C and other places where it was +40C. Even properly dressed the former was much more uncomfortable. |

Arcola theatre have cancelled their show on Monday and Tuesday of next week due to the heat

If it really is 40C on Monday afternoon, I really wouldn't want to go out. That is a record for the UK and 3C hotter than the human body, so you must sweat to live. Clearly, it'd be cooler in the evening, but I wouldn't want to travel about in that heat. Incidentally, I've been in -50C, wearing 8 layers, and two scarves that immediately became rigid with my frozen breath, and it was scary. But humans can cope with cold by wearing layers. Heat is different. Once you're naked, there's no more layers to take off.  |

I'm hoping to get to Buxton Opera House tomorrow afternoon for Gypsy. I'm not happy with 25 degrees, but compared to what's coming afterwards, I'll cope with it!
Luckily I have my final leave days for this academic year on Monday and Tuesday so I can stay indoors and enjoy the footie in relative coolness.

The weather forecast is making me feel suicidal at the moment. Every time I look the temperatures for Monday & Tuesday have gone up. The BBC is currently forecasting 39 degrees for both days. I really don't want to live through that.

I really don't want to live through that. In the 1980's I'd time my shopping so I was in the freezer part of the supermarkets at the hottest time of the day. Take care Dawn as I'm not a heat fan too. |

I remember the 1976 heat wave, it was worse than now, it had very high temperatures every single day for more than two weeks, it was totally unrelenting. There were also massive swarms of ladybirds, I remember that they totally covered some plants so you couldn't see them.

When I was a lot younger I was a holiday rep for many years in Greece and the Canary Islands. The canaries were fine as they have quite a temperate climate with only occasional very hot days but Greece was very hot in July and August. Can you imagine having to wear long trousers, shirt, tie and Jacket to do airport transfers. We used to put the sheets in a bath of cold water before going to bed and then putting them on the bed wet and laying on them. Mind you I survived and only have happy memories. The older I get the less heat I can cope with.

I vaguely recall 76 as I was only 5 then. They mentioned the swarms of ladybirds on a Channel 5 documentary about that summer recently. Everyone I have known said that was the hottest or the most unrelenting heat like Jan does and those people were much younger then so probably enjoyed the heat a lot more than their current elder selves would so it must have been scorching then.

I can remember having an ice cream cone and all the ladybirds sticking to it...so far as the heat goes, I'm kidding myself that once we get past Too Hot, the numbers cease to matter.

Sorry folks, it was fine for me in London, lived in a maisonette and on holiday most of it ( teacher 🤪 in secondary school) You could arrange outdoor parties with no concern about possible rain. It went on for weeks until the gov appointed a Minister for drought and then it rained. I wasn’t affected at all by the agricultural problems, the lack of water or the heat. The effects might have been ongoing, I expect economically with hindsight they were but ‘O to be young was very heaven ‘ or someat Wordsworth said..

Surely we are going to see mass cancellations of London shows on Monday and Tuesday. Even if the houses are air-conditioned, the "don't travel unless absolutely necessary" message is going to make the West End as empty as it was in the pandemic.

I remember it too though I was 5 turning 6 that summer. The local reservoir dried up and we were able to walk across it. There were standpipes for water in some places iirc |

Apparently no trains running between York and London on Tuesday - not that you can tell from their confusing online posts and the fact that tickets are still on sale for those journeys. Or from the fact that they haven't emailed people with tickets for those journeys. I'm currently wondering whether shows will also cancel, since I have to be in London for work but was also supposed to be seeing Sister Act. I'll fight significantly less hard to get there if there isn't going to be a show in it for me.

I was 18 at the time and can't remember it at all. I would have been 7, and I couldn't remember anything about that summer - until I realised that '76 must have been the year of our only holiday in a caravan. My younger sis was born late '75, so would have been a baby at the time. One of mum's relatives owned a caravan that was on a site near Morecambe (so was probably one of those static things) and that year offered it to mum for a week in the summer. Apart from the heat, I remember three things about that holiday. Firstly getting lost (those were the days when kids were allowed to roam free, and I took that opportunity, only to realise when I tried to return to 'our' caravan that they all looked the same!). Secondly, when we walked down to the beach, only to realise that baby sis had no sunhat, so mum improvised by putting a spare pair of knickers on her head (and taking photos for posterity!). Finally, the occasion when I realised for the first time that insects bite/sting (I was bitten on the arm by something, which resulted in a nasty 'spot'. Mum once again improvised, wrapping a disposable nappy filled with a mix of sugar and soap pieces around my arm, to 'draw out the poison'...which did actually work!). |

The antibiotic cream I use twice daily, for rosacea, has the instruction "Store below 25C. Do not refrigerate." Wondering what I'm supposed to do with it when no where other than the fridge is going to be below 25C today & tomorrow. Also wishing we had a chest freezer rather than an ordinary upright one, so I could do a Snowman & get into it!
