Between the heat and Heathrow, I think I'll postpone my holiday visit from the US next week until the fall. I arrived through Heathrow the other day and was through Passport control in about 15 minutes. While it did take a little longer for my bags to come through, it was nothing I’d complain about. So possibly things have improved or I just got very lucky that day? As for the heat, I’m originally from the south so (even though I hate it), I’m used to it. Plus it’s been this hot in NYC quite often in the summer. I’m still not doing much today and tomorrow besides getting Ubers to the theatres but while 103 is HOT, it’s not anything new to a lot of America. Sadly lol |

The antibiotic cream I use twice daily, for rosacea, has the instruction "Store below 25C. Do not refrigerate." Wondering what I'm supposed to do with it when no where other than the fridge is going to be below 25C today & tomorrow. Also wishing we had a chest freezer rather than an ordinary upright one, so I could do a Snowman & get into it! Could you store it in a plastic bag in cool water? |

Btw, make sure your phones, radios etc. are fully charged in case of power cuts - we've just had one here.

Or wrap in damp flannel which you can make into an ice flannel in the freezer ( put flat flannel laid into a plastic bag and when it freezes it is still foldable round something) |

Nearly 11pm & it's still so hot outside the house isn't cooling down upstairs even with every window open. Not expecting to get much sleep tonight & absolutely dreading tomorrow.

A very warm and quite uncomfortable night. I was up a few times. It stunk so much near me yesterday too. There are a couple of take always near me. Like a soup the air.

It is strange some people (and the scaremongering press of course), are making such a big song and dance over this - lots of people by choice go on holiday to Spain/Greece/Sicily/Dubai/Australia/Las Vegas etc. which have similar temperatures so it's not totally unfamiliar to them and not regarded as a bad thing at all. |

Unlike this country. And if you've ever lived in one of those countries without the benefit of air conditioning in mid-summer you would indeed think that a heat wave was a bad thing. |

I never go on holiday anywhere hot during the summer. The last time I went on holiday in July outside the UK was on a Baltic cruise. I've only been to Spain in April & November & even then it was hotter than I'd like. Never been to any of the other places you cite. I have never experienced 40 degree temperatures anywhere & I really, really don't want to be experiencing them today! I am consistent in disliking heat anywhere. Though as has already been said, it's even worse in the UK because we're not designed for heat. They say you should have all your windows shut & curtains closed as cooler inside than out. That is working for me. I always close curtains in the sumer anyway, or at least try to: our summers are perpetual fights between me trying to keep out every ray of sun my mother wanting some daylight! Usually I'd have the fanlights open behind the curtains but yesterday today I've closed all the windows because the breeze is just blowing hot air in.
I was right in thinking I wouldn't get much sleep last night. I think I managed about an hour, plus a couple of less than half an hour dozes. The only time the temperature was bearable was about 5am & sadly that didn't last long. This weather is unbearable.

I have a remote wireless thermometer at the end of the garden which earlier read 39.4. Indoors it was 29. I went to a supermarket around midday and curiously it was quite windy around the building - it felt like I was standing in front of a fan heater. Most unpleasant. Good to see Tesco had set up a stall outside the store entrance giving out fruit squash drinks. |

To be fair where I am ‘only’ got up to 36 degrees - and was 31 in my home office when I gave up and left. The problem is once my flat heats up it doesn’t cool down again for ages even when the temperature drops. Fortunately I had an escape option - booked a hotel room using some loyalty points. The air con is glorious! |

We've got big, thick 1970s velvet curtains and they've been very effective keeping the house cool. I'd also recommend the shade sails from Primrose - we got one cheap, reduced to around £15 to £20 for the 5m triangle in an unfashionable colour in the sale.
