My first trip into the west end today since lockdown to get my 50% discount meal and I am actually dreading the thought of getting there in this heat. Walk, tube, facemask and heat not a good combination. But I'm sure the meal will be lovely and ill be glad I went in the end.

A foundry worker has just been on the wireless. He'd done a nine hour shift in a temperature of 47°C. That's hot!

Some nice storms last night, though. All we've had are a couple of rumbles on thunder on Monday & a short shower yesterday morning. Very envious of all the places getting spectacular lightning to look at.
If there's an opposite to SAD then I think I have it. I'm longing for cold, dark winter days. It's heat & sunshine that make me depressed, stressed & anxious.

Couldn't it still be called SAD? Or does the SAD deffination state it has to be the cold?... I would Google but I'm too hot and miserable to check!

There's a live lightning maps page online if you want to track incoming storms - I'm in the NW and we've had some odd ones around midnight these last few days, lots of strobe-like flashing but mostly without thunderclaps.

I'm lucky in my permanent WFH office (i.e. my living room) - my house stays fairly cool downstairs and has maxed out at 24C this week with outside temps around these parts reaching about 34C. Upstairs it gets much hotter but we've had early evening thunderstorms the last couple of days to take the edge off which has made the nights more bearable, and 🤞 it looks like we're heading for the same today.

I’m hoping tonight will be just a little cooler...

There is, as far as I can tell, one single Dyson fan to be purchased in the whole of London (and it’s not the model I want.) Friends said I was mad paying a huge amount for my Dyson 2 years ago (its the one that purifies the air too) but its been a godsend the last 2 summers in the bedroom Amen to that! Best peak lockdown impulse purchase!

Yet again the Met Office is forecasting thunder & lightning tomorrow but I'm not holding out much hope, given they've been forecasting it since something like Saturday to no avail. Low of 20 degrees forecast for tonight, so that'll be another night of 5-6 hours of broken sleep if I'm lucky.

The weather app was promising a thunder storm from 3pm today- sadly it wasn’t to be. We've just had a monster one, two hours of constant lightning and torrential rain, but it didn't seem to show on the lightning tracker!

Got caught in the rain tonight whilst waiting for the bus back home after work. Never have I been more grateful for a thunderstorm! A fantastic lightning show as well.

Just left the office (ridiculously late) - turns out the one plus of working into the early hours is that compared to the last time I stepped out of the office 11 hours ago it is pleasantly cool!

Finally having some rain, with accompanying fairly distant rolls of thunder. Still no sign of any lighting though.

It's the same here.
I saw a couple of people wearing jackets this morning. It may be overcast but it's still August. It's not exactly jacket season.

That's it, I admit defeat. Yesterday was too hot to sit outside; today is too cold...even in a jumper.
Goodness knows why anyone would think the side of a hill, facing into the wind, was the best location for a park. Those Victorians have a lot to answer for!

What a, very welcome, diference 24 hours makes. Last night I was sweating just sitting still on my sofa. Tonight I've cleared the ironing backlog without breaking into a sweat!

We've had a few spots of rain in East London but the promised thunderstorm has not arrived to break the heat yet - it is still 26.7 degrees currently in my living room and I am sticky!

The Met Office doesn't give temperature observation data for Cambridge so the nearest I can get is Bedford & that gives a maximum of 20 degrees today. Considering it's only about 60 miles north of London that's a surprising difference in temperatures. Of course there is the urban heat island effect but that's usually only about a couple of degrees.

The storm has now arrived,so I suspect the temperature will now drop considerably. Part of it I suspect will be the heat build up in my terraced house!

We've holding off on the heating too. I've got my blanket out but am not swapping to my thicker duvet just yet in case it warms up again - easier to add/remove a blanket than remove/insert a duvet into a duvet cover!
This last week felt like it went from summer on the Tuesday through autumn on the Wednesday/Thursday & hit winter by Friday! Admittedly I'm in the east. I understand the weather is better for most of the rest of the country, contrary to the usual weather patterns for England.

I know some say it's Mother Nature's way of preparing for a harsh winter, but this does seem to be a mast year. Acorns are huge in number and large in size.
