I'm quite excited because I've always thought WSS was in danger of becoming a museum piece and a radical reinvention could be what the show needs.

I thought no-one was allowed to change the choreography? Yes that is a thing - but obviously they have been granted the rights to do so! Statement from Sondheim in the Playbill article: “What keeps theatre alive over time is reinterpretation, and when that reinterpretation is as invigorating as his productions of A View from the Bridge and The Crucible, it makes for something to look forward to with excitement,” said Sondheim in a statement. |

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Robbins choreography is kept for certain scenes.

I know I get into trouble when I comment on shows I haven't seen, but surely Jerome Robbins's contribution to 'West Side Story' is an integral part of the show and his choreography should form the basis for whatever is devised for this production.
If Mr Sondheim is recommending 'reinterpretation' that goes as far as devising new choreography then I guess he won't mind if some new lyrics are introduced as well, especially to replace all that corny stuff in 'Maria' and 'Tonight'. Or maybe that's not what he meant at all by 'reinterpretation'!

Jerome Robbin’s choreography is the definite version of West Side Story and will still be done, as it is ingrained in the vaults of Broadway history. But without change pieces stagnate and when things stagnate they tend to wither. So new interpretation will either be a flat out rave, which will keep it in the public attention and will support Robbins’ choreography for future generations or it will flop which will serve to highlight Robbins’ brilliance.

It will probably be like Chicago where some things are directly lifted from the original choreography, while others are in the same style.

I think they'll completely scrap the Robbins choreography - van Hove isn't one to do things by half and if you're going to reimagine such an iconic piece I think you need to completely start afresh

I still shudder at the memory of what that man did to "Rent" when he directed it in the Netherlands in 2000.
I'd rather watch paint dry than him mess about with West Side Story. That said, a fresh approach would definitely be interesting in the right capable hands.

I'm all for this casting apart from Ramasar- it's a shame it's brought down by this. I think this production will be unreal, and beat everyones expectations. Or be a complete laughing stock, and fall right on it's head. Not to add it's been directed by Ivo Van Hove, again another marmite director.
Excited to see how it all pans out.
