Glenn Close may well be absolutely brilliant, but release date maths (it came out in mid-August in the US, weirdly before its TIFF ‘premiere’) and the fact that it didn’t generate huge audience interest (only $12.5 million Box office) suggests that it’s not going to get a big Oscar campaign. I think she’ll be overlooked by the big awards - though she will likely win a handful of smaller ones. Remember, folks, awards often don’t go to the actual best performances - when they do it’s a happy accident. The system rewards the best awards campaigns, and it’s very unusual for a film to be released in August and sustain a campaign all the way through to February. Boyhood was the last film to manage it, but that had the incredible production story to tell. Warner Bros and Fox will likely put up strong campaigns for ASIB and The Favourite. The former has another potential award contender in The Mule which may put Bradley Cooper against Clint Eastwood both in acting and directing category although Cooper could potentially a best supporting nod as he's also in The Mule. |

Gaga does an incredible job here, she is actually a very good actress however it's true that her character lacks an Oscar winning moment apart for maybe the last song. She will however be nominated specially when the Academy are so desperate to increase viewers ratings of the broadcast She really does |

Glenn's biggest hurdle isn't getting the win, its getting the nomination. As said by a few members, the film came out early and is a fairly small film that bar the two leads, isn't that great a film. By the time Oscar nominations come out, it will be interesting to see if she makes it into the mix, let alone winning.
Either way, I think both Gaga and Cooper will walk away with their first Oscar's. With Gaga nominated for Actress and Song (likely two nominations), and Cooper nominated for Picture (as Producer), Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Song (again, possibly two nominations), I'd be shocked if either if them don't walk away with one each.

I’m still failing to see anything natural or brilliant about Lady Gaga’s performance. It was fine and did the job, but no more than Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard. I put the two films as a parallel really because the circumstances are quite similar - successful female singer approx 8-10 years into her career lands first movie role playing a singer; male co-star in his 40s is hot stuff right now and is instrumental in casting of singer; movie and soundtrack is a commercial success; movie ends on female singer performing big ballad in tribute to lead male character. In fact that last song had so many hints of I Will Always Love You in its delivery I noticed it right away.

There is a suggestion around that Daytime Emmys shouldn't count and I'm inclined to agree. And really, how Cynthia won the award in order to get an EGT is laughable. Seriously, all she did was turn up to the 'Today' show and sing a song from 'The Color Purple'. It cheapens the EGOT I think.
I might tweet her to let her know. I think she'll like that.

It's more the fact of just how much she was going on about it as if a Daytime Emmy had the same prestige as a Primetime one, but that's a discussion for another thread. I don't think all Daytime awards should necessarily be excluded, but the performance one is one of the ones that is just a bit unnecessary in my opinion. |

So I really loved the second major song Gaga sings. The one she starts writing in the diner and performs at the festival on the piano.
Otherwise, I wasn’t terribly impressed with her acting. Unlike the 1954 version in which the struggles of both characters is pretty much evenly split, this was very much a study of addiction, a very personal role for Cooper and I can’t tell how much the movie favours him because of how he wrote it or because Gaga didn’t bring what she needed to her part.
The bathtub scene was a case in point. He gradually needled and needled her and became more and more cruel and her response was a continual flat exasperation. I think her nude scene was almost necessary in that it showed her completely raw and vulnerable, which she struggled to do consitantly with her face and voice.
The only song I really disliked was the last one. It was a bit of a 90s Diva-style ballad and she performed bombastically. As people said above didn’t fit in with what Cooper told her about singing with resonance and heart.

Listening to the Soundtrack again today. I know alot are predicting Shallow will win an Oscar, but my god, if I had it my way, I Will Never Love Again should storm it! Such a stunning song, and Gaga's performance is nothing short of incredible in that scene! I imagine it will at least get nominated alongside Shallow, and everything crossed it will win.  |

Having decided not to wait for the blu-ray/digital release, I bit the bullet and went to see this in a cinema this afternoon (the Odeon Haymarket Luxe, a lovely seat and the whole of the front row to myself, shame about the Tw*t sat a few rows behind rummaging through what sounded like the biggest multipack of crisps in the history of Christendom for the first 90 minutes or so and eating at least 4 packets but I guess you can’t have it all - I’m hoping they’re suffering a massive case of gut rot right about now) and I have to say I loved it.
Yes I it starts to sag just over half way through and the music isn’t really the sort of thing I listen to normally but I’ll admit to having a tear in my eye at the end - both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were great, Cooper proving he can actually act after appearing in lots of crud like the second two Hangover films (I saw him in the Elephant Man at the TRH and wasn’t that impressed with him channeling his inner Rainbow George)

'Shallow' is the only song from the film that has made the Oscar longlist for Best Original Song so that's the only chance it has in that category (so long as it's picked for the eventual nomination list). |

I'd argue it's not even a problem, as Hercules is a far superior movie with a far greater soundtrack than this most recent version of A Star Is Born.
