The 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredrick March still works as a tear jerker. And you don't have to put up with those annoying "Oh look, it's a real concert" scenes.
But Kris Kristofferson was at his oh so doable best in the 1976 version.

Hmm, not a fan. The Judy Garland version is so much better.
Gaga is fine, but the film seriously drags in the final half and I thought it peaked too soon with the songs. They just seemed to get worse.

The Streisand finale of With One More Look At You/ Watch Closely Now was quite thrilling in the cinema back in the seventies.

Hmm, not a fan. The Judy Garland version is so much better. Gaga is fine, but the film seriously drags in the final half and I thought it peaked too soon with the songs. They just seemed to get worse. Agree. The power ballad at the end is woeful and is everything Cooper warned Gaga about earlier.
Gaga is engaging in the first half, much less interesting and natural in the second but that's how the character is written.

The post in question was posted two months ago - but can people at least try to warn people if they are going to put spoilers in their post (and big ones at that) I had been thinking of going to see this tomorrow, but as it seems the ending has been given away, don't think I will bother now.

You should still see it. This is the fourth remake of the film so there will be plenty of people going in to it knowing the ending and enjoying it anyway. |

The story has been retold so many times that it can't possibly have spoilers unless they change the whole plot. It'd be like complaining that someone disclosed the plot of Cinderella.

I've never seen any of the other versions, mainly because I can't stand Judy Garland or Barbra Streisand (making a mental note to steer clear of the Musicals section of this forum for a while in case of attacks from outraged Friends of Dorothy and Yentl fans)

I must say the only other one I’ve seen is the Garland one and I did know the plot before seeing it. It was just one of those things that I thought people knew. I’m not sure where I first heard about it other than my parents playing the soundtrack to the 70s version.

It really has nothing in common with La La Land, other than being a romance. This isn't even really a musical since they don't sing out of nowhere, it's only ever when writing/recording/performing songs as recording artists. I personally think La La Land is better although most people will probably prefer this since it's more dramatic and the singing is stronger. But even with all that happens in the plot, none of it got me as emotional as the final scene of La La Land. And I was team Moonlight. Quite frankly very few films (including La La Land) deserve the amount of success that that film got. Including this one. And if it gets it suddenly everyone will find this film vastly overrated and a backlash will emerge too. C'est la vie. |

Having seen all the other versions, I found it fascinating to see what characters and scenes are common to all - the heroine's supportive best friend, the bitchy publicist, the awards ceremony, 'do you mind if I take one more look' etc etc. I'm pretty amazed that people don't know the plot but then I recently saw Hamlet with friends who had no idea what was going to happen so what do I know?
One comment - I thought the bitchy publicist had a terrible British accent but on checking I find he's from Hendon!

I know of it because of the obvious films, but I've never seen it or don't know the story. It's like when The Girls was in London, I was apparently one of the rare people who didn't know the story, so when I told everyone not to put spoilers, I got backlash for it. People may not know these stories haha. |
