I hope Lady Gaga gets an Oscar nom for this. Saw yesterday her acting was good as was her singing. Bradley was fine. I hope the script isn't the same as the original one . If it is then nothing much has changed

i loved it, a little bit too long at the end though. {Spoiler - click to view} And why did he commit suicide just because of one bad word from her manager? he was on a good way until then 🤔🤷🏻♀️

Just a reminder that this is a new release, many people haven’t seen it yet and may not be familiar with earlier versions. Please use spoiler tags if you want to mention significant plot points. Thanks.

I suspect Bradley will be nominated, and may very well win, the Oscar for Best Actor. I think Sam Elliot will be a dark horse and get a nom for Best Supporting Actor because small as his role is his performance really stayed with me afterwards and I was surprised by how truly touched I was by him. Bradley will get a nom for Best Director and Gaga will win an Oscar for Best Original Song.
Now for the controversial part: I don't think Gaga will be nominated as Best Actress. While her performance was flawless and captivating there wasn't enough to give her that gut punching role. We never really saw her lose herself in Ally's emotions. This isn't Gaga's fault at all and I think she gave the best possible performance with the material she was given but there were some key moments that would have made her role Oscar worthy that just weren't given to her ie. Judy's breakdown scene in the dressing room. Without a doubt she'll win a Golden Globe and as I've said she'll be given the Oscar for Best Original Song but this year's Oscar belongs to Glenn Close.

Columnist Emily Sheffield complained in Friday's Evening Standard that she had walked out of this but not a hint did she give of the reason for her dissatisfaction, so it's a mystery. Having enjoyed this and hated First Man, I'd have understood had she given up on the latter.

I think, after seeing the film, it will likely get nominations for:
Best Picture Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Director Best Adapted Screenplay Best Original Score Best Original Song (2 Nominations) Best Cinematography Best Film Editing Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing
I think either way, Gaga and Cooper are winning an Oscar. If not Actor, he will win Director, and if not Actress, she will win Original Song.

It would be a travesty if Cooper won Best Director for this, the direction for the first 15 mins is all over the place.
Best Director should go to Barry Jenkins again - If Beale Street Could Talk shows how a film should be directed.

It should win Best Original Song for Shallow though. I was at best ambivalent towards Gaga before the film, but that song is astonishing, it gave me chills

I wouldn't be surprised if Original Song and Score are the only categories it wins though, and Score is not even guaranteed as there are some other good ones out there.

No, I wouldn’t be surprised if it cleaned up. The Academy are desperate to have a populist film sweep the ceremony due to the load of recent Best Picture winners with low box office scores and the constant (IMO unfounded) criticism that they’re elitist. Lady Gaga really doesn’t deserve a nomination however as I’ve just come back from seeing the main contenders at the LFF and can easily pick out about 8 performances (even discounting Glenn Close) far more deserving and accomplished.

BUT don’t you think she sounds like Bette Midler? And don’t you think Bette Midler would sound f***ing amazing singing that song?

Never happens for musicals except La La Land but I think they've learned their lesson with going too OTT over one film with that.

the idea that some slightly grungy Joni Mitchell type would immediately sell out like that seemed rather far fetched Ha ha ha ha! That's now put into my head the wonderful notion that Joni Mitchell started off walking across tables and chair-straddling punters while singing La Vie en Rose in drag bars. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Bit of a LG fan anyway, and was neutral on Cooper but he's gone up in my estimation from this. I do agree with some of the caveats others have stated - the timeline isn't clear, and Ally does seem to capitulate easily but then that's not beyond comprehension. I too was a bit puzzled by the early bar-room brawl scene that flared up out of nowhere and was never referenced again. Perhaps a rather clumsy device for showing what a tough cookie she is, and how he is deep-down very caring (peas etc)? But none of the blips stopped the 2 hrs 15 mins whizzing by. Yes, it's a much stronger 1st act with the 2nd and 3rd sagging a bit but still all very entertaining. She looks great at the start, really beautiful. Lovely top lip. A big plus mark is its depiction of rock gigs, something that has routinely been cringingly badly shown in films over the years. The opening scene in particular is excellent in this regard. Re the earlier comment about the (manager's/publicist's?) accent, there is that weird thing that happens sometimes when English people are in US films, that they somehow make their own accent sound unconvincing. The spoilers discussion earlier in this thread was interesting. There is an ingrained statute-of-limitations assumption, made by some here, that certain films/stories etc can't by now possibly be spoilered. But they can. So it's lucky I didn't read this thread before seeing the film, as I was a complete ASIB virgin. I just hope my "peas etc" above isn't too much of a spoiler for others.

Gaga does an incredible job here, she is actually a very good actress however it's true that her character lacks an Oscar winning moment apart for maybe the last song. She will however be nominated specially when the Academy are so desperate to increase viewers ratings of the broadcast

I think the momentum for a Glenn Close win is gathering steam so unless someone else comes along to pip her to the post at the last minute, I can't see it going to anyone else, rather like Julianne Moore's win for 'Still Alice'. I *do* think Gaga will get a Best Actress nomination though. Plus Gaga will win the Comedy/Musical Golden Globe (Close will win the Drama one). It's Bette Midler in 'The Rose' all over again.

Olivia Coleman is excellent in The Favourite and won in Venice, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that she could cause an upset. There is a question as to whether Gaga and Cooper should each be in the Lead or Supporting categories though - I haven't heard much about who is the Supporting Actress front-runner this year, and we all know that producers shoehorn people into categories they really shouldn't be just to increase their chances of winning (Jennifer Hudson for one!)... Word is that A Star is Born has been entered by its producers in the Drama categories at the Globes, not Comedy/Musical - ridiculous decision if true!

Word is that A Star is Born has been entered by its producers in the Drama categories at the Globes, not Comedy/Musical - ridiculous decision if true! That's true. I adore Colman (poor Glenn, the Bafta is already Olivia's) and would love her to win but I wonder whether she will come a bit unstuck as Colman, Stone and Weisz are essentially co-leads in the film (Olivia gets the showier part, but Stone has the narrative arc of the film) and so they will cancel themselves out a bit. They are campaigning Olivia as lead with Emma and Rachel as Supporting though apparently. If Glenn loses this one, I think her chances of winning a competitive Oscar in the future will diminish. There's no way that Gaga is Supporting in 'A Star is Born' though. She and Cooper are co-leads and should be considered as such. If they put Gaga in Supporting just to increase her chances then I hope she loses. Regina King for 'If Beale Street Could Talk' is being rumoured as the current big favourite for Supporting Actress (with maybe Amy Adams for 'Vice'). And that's silly to enter them as Drama at the Golden Globes in my opinion. I know it's not a comedy but at least they'd both win the Comedy/Musical category and come into the Oscars with a bit of momentum behind them.

My prediction is that she’ll win the GG and maybe a couple of others, but she’ll give some overlong, annoying acceptance speeches showing some obvious fake humility and will end up pissing people off.

Regina King’s big scene in If Beale Street Could Talk was phenomenal. A hell of a lot more subtle than those showy OTT turns people praise from the likes of Viola Davis.

Regina King for 'If Beale Street Could Talk' is being rumoured as the current big favourite for Supporting Actress Oh that's a no-brainer then, she is outstanding. Even if she were put into Supporting just to have a shot then Gaga wouldn't stand a chance against King's performance.

Finally going to see this tonight. I haven’t seen the film previously (I didn’t even know it exsisted and this was a remake until a colleague pointed it out) so I’m even more glad I’ve stayed away from this thread and from looking at reviews/comments on social media etc. Looking forward to it, hopefully it isn’t a disappointment.

Glenn Close may well be absolutely brilliant, but release date maths (it came out in mid-August in the US, weirdly before its TIFF ‘premiere’) and the fact that it didn’t generate huge audience interest (only $12.5 million Box office) suggests that it’s not going to get a big Oscar campaign. I think she’ll be overlooked by the big awards - though she will likely win a handful of smaller ones.
Remember, folks, awards often don’t go to the actual best performances - when they do it’s a happy accident. The system rewards the best awards campaigns, and it’s very unusual for a film to be released in August and sustain a campaign all the way through to February. Boyhood was the last film to manage it, but that had the incredible production story to tell.

Colman will win BAFTA and Comedy Globe (The Wife and ASIB are going Drama). She will likely also win some major critics awards. She's in good stead.

It very much feels like Glenn, Olivia and Gaga are somewhat on equal footing. I don't think Gaga will win Actress, just because she will win a Song Oscar so they will likely think that will be her prize. With Olivia and Glenn, either could win, but I think it's Glenn's at the moment, because she has the momentum at the moment.
