Ooooh, the shortlist is out. Ooooh, it's not that interesting. I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering where the nominations for Keith Stevenson in 'Out There on Fried Meat Ridge Road' and Katherine Parkinson in 'Dead Funny' are. On the plus side, Evgeny Lebedev better start running because @emicardiff is going to hunt him down. One nomination. Ouch. Who reads this crap anyway? Isn't it just for lining rabbit hutches with? |

Was Half a Sixpence eligable this year or last? Either way, Charlie being snubbed is criminal.
That said, I'd give that musical award to Janie Dee just becuase she was so fabulous and I didn't see Robert, but I could actually see him winning because the role itself is so much!

All the big, plush, expensive, predictable shows... good to see Katherine Soper in there, though - I loved Wish List. I'm surprised no Mosquitoes (it's not as good a play as The Children, but some excellent performances), or for the brilliant Erin Doherty, a stunning tour-de-force in all 4 productions she's been in this year.

Really pleased to see a nom for The Children. It won't win, of course, but I thought it was great. It's going to Broadway too, so this certainly won't do it any harm (cynical, moi?)

The ES Theatre Awards are the most nonsensical awards that aren't voted for by the general public. Why no acknowledgement of supporting performers? Why shove male musical performances in the same category as female ones like straight drama is somehow far more deserving? Why only three nominations per category (apart from Best Play)? About the only things they've got spot on are making sure Laura Donnelly isn't overlooked for The Ferryman and acknowledging the excellence of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Sheila Atim.

Surprised 42nd Street didn't get anything considering the amount of money that's spent in their newspaper on advertising

No Labour of Love yet Ink gets nominations? Seems like they print journalism looking after print journalism, Ink seems more flawed to me. No Freeman but, much worse, no Greig! I’d also have put Albion over Oslo but at least they didn't shut the latter out.

Usual awards announcement, some you agree with and some you don't.
(I'm not going to bother) but I'd love to look back at ES reviews over the last year to see if they agree with their own choices.
I'd have thrown in Juliet Stephenson's Wings performance

Bizarre nominations. Bertie Carvel (who doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell against Scott's iconic and revelatory Hamlet, and Garfield's Hollywood profile) for a relatively minor role? Over Paddy Considine's superb performance in the Ferryman? But they do acknowledge two other cast members in the same play? No Imelda?
Best Play and Playwright are the only categories where the nominations at least are the logical choices.
Most famous person willing to show up and schmooze Lebedev is right.

Looks like it - I was surprised to see The Children in there, given how West-Endy everything else is, but then remembered it has gone to the US so may return here (I had tickets for the Royal Court but couldn't make it, just read the text, so hope it comes back!) |

Thanks bb27. So as expected The Ferryman is acclaimed. I’m on me own again... The winners seem to be in or from continuing shows. Angels going to Broadway so a continued life there. Apart from Glenda whom I suspect they could not ignore and she might keel over before another go. ( doubtful, tough woman!)
