I'm still in shock that Eva Nobelzada didn't get a nomination last year She was as well...but it didn't help that everyone (well many fans/industry peeps) got her hopes up by telling her that she was going to get nommed and then it didn't happen....I almost think its better to assume that someone won't be and then be pleasantly surprised...

Plenty to be confused about but no Jonny Flynn is just insane, none of the nominees in that category are anywhere near his performance I agree that Johnny Flynn was a likely nominee but Tom Sturridge was also excellent. (I didn't see any of the other nominees' performances).

I do think the nominations are rather boring this year. It's just the same couple of things nominated for every category, which makes no sense given how much brilliant stuff has been around this year. Happy that Hand To God was nominated for best new comedy, but I'd have nominated Harry Melling for his part as well given that he pretty much carries the whole thing single handedly. As with every year, I've seen WAY more musicals than plays, but surprisingly I've not seen every musical in the musical theatre categories as I didn't see Guys and Dolls or Bend It Like Beckham. Would've liked to have seen Sam Mackay on the list of Best Actor in A Musical. Bedella was very good but not the most memorable character in my opinion. Happy for Dan Burton though as I thought he was fantastic in Gypsy (although he'd left by the time I got to see the show, and so I only saw him on the televised version of Gypsy). Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical is a tough category but I think that Lara will probably get it. Imelda's probably got Best Actress in a Musical in the bag, and from the hype around Matt Henry in Kinky Boots I'd say he'll probably bag that award too, even though when I saw the show I didn't love him in the role. Anyway, I look forward to the ceremony as the musical acts are always fun, even if the wins are often quite predictable.

She did well to get on stage and perform so well at the ceremony considering. I was nowhere near as mature at her age, I was mostly focused on getting drunk and going on the pull.

Saw In The Heights tonight and now I'm really confused about which show I want to win Best Musical (I've seen three out of the four.) I'm surprised David Bedella was nominated, he was really good as usual but it's just not a very memorable role.

Johnny Flynn really ought to have been nominated but there are plenty of other performers who might have got one too. The awards also really show up that these are for the West End so Amanda Lawrence misses out which is a real shame. What I find odd is that bar a few exceptions the nominated shows have all opened just before or after Christmas, so any show that was on last summer has a lesser chance of getting nominated. What is the qualifying period?

I feel like Amanda Lawrence should have been eligible, 'cos Roger Allam won for Falstaff at the Globe. But I guess if the awards are looking to publicise shows and sell tickets, then people are going to want to see the actress who won the award rather than the one who played it last summer and has moved on.

If I remember rightly Nell Gwynn only played a dozen or so performances at the Globe? Therefore it wouldn't have been eligible in any category for its run there.

I haven't seen it, but isn't it weird that The Master Builder didn't receive any nomination? I was surprised High Society got nothing! I would've thought it at least deserved Choreography or Revival. Not to mention Kate Fleetwood, who was brilliant!

Yeah I'm surprised about High Society particularly when Guys and Dolls did so well - High Society may be a weaker musical but it was a better production - especially the choreography.
Nothing for Fiennes is odd - more deserving than Cumberbatch or Branagh that's for sure. Actually was Man & Superman eligible last year or this as he was better in that the Master Builder? Geoffrey Streatfeild I would have preferred as well ahead of those two but celebrity wins out again - surprised no Bradley Cooper really!
Would have liked to see Sinead Cusack on the list for Splendour as well.

Well I haven't seen all the nominees yet but a few things leapt out at me when seeing the nominee list.
- like a lot of other people, my first thought was how on earth they could have overlooked Johnny Flynn. That's simply crazy! Michael Pennington nominated for The Winter's Tale? He was fine, but certainly not better than the likes of Johnny Flynn! From that list surely it has to go to Tom Sturridge.
- Kenneth Branagh is seriously nominated for The Winter's Tale? I was in the camp that thought he was the weakest, wooden link of the production. Sad there is no nomination for John Heffernan for Oppenheimer, in which I thought he was excellent.
- The best actress category is pretty strong which is great to see.

I do not really rate the Olivier awards. How many of these former winners are regarded as classic shows ? The judges seem to be out of step with normal theatre-goers views.
Grand Hotel Guys And Dolls Caroline, Or Change The Magic Flute La Cage Aux Folles Hello, Dolly Into The Woods Crazy For You Sweeney Todd Merrily We Roll Along City Of Angels

Grand Hotel Guys And Dolls Caroline, Or Change The Magic Flute La Cage Aux Folles Hello, Dolly Into The Woods Crazy For You Sweeney Todd Merrily We Roll Along City Of Angels They're all classic shows, you could quibble about Merrily, given its chequered history and The Magic Flute was a South African reworking of the Mozart original but all are very highly regarded. Occasionally they do go for a less expected show like Sunny Afternoon but that's a list to be pleased with.

Nah, they may appeal to a certain group of people. But most theatre goers have different tastes. The Oliviers should stick to opera, ballet and boring plays for old people.

Shenton is doing a series with London Theatre Guide discussing the awards, who he thinks and who he wants to win... its interesting reading! He has done the four Actress categories this week: www.londontheatre.co.uk/londontheatre/news/ltg16/shentonolivierawardsactress16.htmSo personally, in line of his, my four choices: Best Actress: I am ashamed to say I have seen none of these performances (though I am booked to see both Nell Gwynn and People, Places and Things!) but I am basing it on reviews, it will be Denise. I would love to see Gemma win though, and she is probably the second choice to win so I can only hope. Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Again, I haven't seen any of the four (I don't see plays often, sorry!) but I am predicting Judi Dench. Best Actress in a Musical: Need I say more. Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical: I would honestly be thrilled if any of the four won! I have seen all four in their respective roles and I would say each of them do well. Preeya is scene stealing and the best part of Bend It Like Beckham. Amy is great, but I fear her role is too small to match the others in this category. Lara was stunning as Louise and holds herself strongly against Imelda. Emma was fantastic and stole the entire show and carry's it completely on her shoulders. My guess would be Lara but don't count out Emma just yet, I wouldn't be surprised if either were up there on the night but all deserving nominees.

I really wasn't pleased with the 'Best Supporting Actor in a Musical' category. Gavin Spokes from Guys and Dolls was good, but not sure about the rest.
Peter Davison-He was quite a good actor, but I felt his singing was really weak. It was a real shame, because Gypsy was great but he ruined it a bit. David Bedella-I loved David in The Rocky Horror Show, but I felt he was severely miscast and his voice did not suit the songs. Dan Burton-I'm in the minority here, but I don't even remember his performance. From what I can remember he was ok, but I felt he just faded into the background.
I was surprised they were chosen over Jamie Campbell Bower and Jamal Andreas from Bend It Like Beckham, Alexis Gerred from American Idiot and Joe Aaron Reid from In the Heights
I also wasn't too keen on Sophie Thompson from Guys and Dolls. I found her voice to be a little whiny. She was putting this on for the role, but it just felt so unnecessary and it put me off her. She was chosen over Lily Frazer from In the Heights and Siobhan Harrison from Guys and Dolls.
Really happy to see Kinky Boots, In the Heights (well apart from David Bedella) and Bend It Like Beckham get nominations!

I'm not gonna lie, I really hope Dan Burton wins! He was (other than Imelda) my second favourite performance in that show! And I don't know what it is, but I just loved his performance so, so much.. his number was one that I walked away thinking WOW. And I was the only one who tapped him for a nomination on the other forum and everyone called me crazy lol, so I would love for him to win.
I'm not surprised about Jamie Campbell Bower not being nominated, he was great in the Sweeney movie but you would think he couldn't sing after BILB and he was one of the weakest aspects of the entire show! Though I do agree with Jamal Andreas, he was just as great as Preeya and I would of put him down for a nomination over Gavin Spokes anyday!

I felt the same way about Anthony Ramos in Hamilton. No one is even mentioning him in Tony Award predictions but I thought he phenomenal!
Do you think Dan Burton will win? I want Gavin Spokes to win but I feel Peter Davison may win.
Jamie Campbell Bower was really good the night I went, but I know I am in the minority with that thought.
Surprised that great shows such as Di and Viv and Rose, Hay Fever, The Elephant Man, American Idiot, The Trial, Ticking, Harlequinade and The Master Builder. Any ideas as to why some of these were completely left out?

Arts Theatre is not a West End theatre so shows like American Idiot are not eligible. I personally would of liked an Aaron Sidwell nomination but unless it moved into a West End house, it would not happen.

According to Wikipedia the Arts Theatre is West End. Wikipedia... you are taking Wikipedia as bible?
I am only going by what someone told me a while back on the other forum that it wasn't a West End theatre... I don't know for sure.

I didn't say Wikipedia was right, was just saying that's what it said, no need for sarcasm. I am pretty sure it's West End, but not 100% sure. The Olivier should clarify what theatres are part of their awards.
