I think it is theatres that are part of the Society of something or other... and the Arts theatre is not part of that Society? Someone can probably say more about that than I can haha

SOLT. Theatres have to belong to Society Of London Theatre for their shows to be eligible for the Oliviers. There are also affiliate theatres that can't have normal nominations but do have the possibility for recognition in the Outstanding Achievement In An Affiliate Theatre award.

Just wondering with the current crop of shows about to open this year at the Charing Cross, if any of their shows will be edible next year?

Is there some list to say which venues are SOLT?

Is there some list to say which venues are SOLT? I had a look around the SOLT website and the Oliviers and both seem rather reluctant to mention which theatres are involved. If they do list them then they certainly don't want to make it easy to find that list. Perhaps members come and go and they can't be bothered to keep a list up to date, or maybe there's some evil conspiracy that requires secrets to be kept.

It's a capacity thing, isn't it? Any theatre up to a certain size which pays Equity rates in which a Producer has to pay an equity deposit or some nonsense like that.
Geographically the Arts is a West End venue, but it isn't really a West End venue, in the same way that the Charing Cross theatre is not a west end venue.

Yet the Arts is considered by most a West End theatre & Charing Cross is not. There isn't the same consistency you have on Broadway where there are clear guidelines.

Aye but when nobody is certain what theatres are or aren't eligible then clearly better consistency / understanding is required.

So therefore we are agreed that on the SOLT website they should publish a long list once a year?

Four or five years ago, SOLT published a complete list of eligible productions. Since then, they don't even say which venues or companies are eligible. This complete removal of public information about eligibility suggests that the SOLT awards have become far less fair and open and much more subject to manupulation by commercial producers, etc. And we know that's the case because there have been various leaks about how the nomination and voting procedures have been changed. Personally, I don't think this matters. It just means that we know to view the Olivier awards as a commercial industry promotional puff-fix.

Just to add a bit of spice to my humdrum existence I decided to place a couple of bets on the Olivier Awards, but I can find no bookmaker offering odds. I could have bet on the Oscars but not the Olivier Awards. So if the bookies aren't taking bets on what is a popular and high profile event it may be an indication that they are nervous about the process.

The Oliviers may be among the highest profile events in London theatre, but I don't think that means they're a popular and high profile event generally speaking.

Liam Neeson must fill slighted that he didn't even get nominated for best hologram in War of the Worlds.

Sorry if it was discussed already - any live broadcast for this on the night?

Sorry if it was discussed already - any live broadcast for this on the night? The awards website says this; "In addition to the public celebration in Covent Garden Piazza, and inside the Royal Opera House, 2016 offers even more ways to watch and listen to the ceremony.
ITV returns, offering theatre fans a chance to watch extensive highlights of proceedings on the evening of 3 April on ITV and the opportunity to enjoy it all over again for weeks after via ITV Hub.
Fans can also listen to the event live as it is broadcast on Mellow Magic, the new station from Magic Radio, which will also air an exciting series looking back at 40 years of the Oliviers in the run-up to the event.
In another exciting new partnership for 2016, the Olivier Awards with MasterCard have teamed up with YouTube. The new Olivier Awards YouTube channel will screen live coverage of the performances in Covent Garden Piazza on the afternoon of 3 April, and will screen the ceremony in full for international audiences."

Thank you, jamescrispy94! Still it is not quite clear whether YouTube channel is having LIVE broadcast of actual ceremony or they'll make it avail right after the show.

Live outside the UK but not in the UK where ITV has acquired the rights to broadcast highlights first.

Live outside the UK but not in the UK where ITV has acquired the rights to broadcast highlights first. So will the whole thing be available in the UK later? Seems a shame that we only get highlights

It seems pretty poor that the UK's biggest theatre awards will be seen live by people everywhere except in the UK. With social media we will all know who's won before ITV deigns to show it.

The BAFTAs have a delay too. It's so annoying. It can't just be because people are scared that someone might swear. At least with The Oliviers, ITV have got the excuse of adverts.
