Why is In the heights considered a new musical, shouldn't it be a revival?

Why is In the heights considered a new musical, shouldn't it be a revival? It has never been done here before, and technically this production is the same as the Southwark production.

Chuffed for Dan Burton and happy to see In the Heights has been nominated.
And Mark Rylance sure is having a good day. :-)

I can't take the smile off my face over the Dan Burton nomination!
I bet Preeya got the shock of her life too considering she was not on many peoples radars to be nominated yet here she is! Very happy with this years nominations.

Pleased about all the nominations for Gypsy, but especially thrilled for Dan Burton. Surprised by the amount of nominations for Hamlet, The Winter's Tale and Guys and Dolls. Supporting Actor (play) is really puzzling - Suchet, Pennington and Sturridge have come out of nowhere, and while he was good, Mark Gatiss wasn't even the best supporting actor in Three Days in the Country, let alone the entirety of the West End. I didn't realise In The Heights was eligible, but knowing now that it is, I'm expecting it to win best new musical (I had thought it'd be Kinky Boots' to lose).

Very surprised Close to You didn't get a nomination at all, expected Outstanding Achievement in Music for it at least.

How is Hamlet up for best sound design?
I hope Drew McOnie wins for choroeography.
Best supporting actor in a musical was clearly a struggle to come up with a list.

The placement of some of the nominations in certain categories is a bit bizarre. Michelle Dotrice is up for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical" for Nell Gwynn while Gemma Arterton is up for simply "Best Actress" for the same production.
Surely they should categorise a production consistently across the different awards in terms of whether they regard it as a play or a musical, even when in this case it's a play with music so it possibly the blurs the lines very slightly.

On the whole it's a pretty dull set of nominations as expected from the Oliviers. It would be nice for once if they threw us a curveball, there's very little in the way of surprises in that list.

Some good choices there and I am really pleased for In The Heights.
Whats on Stage is showing that Judi Dench is nominated for best supporting actress for A Winters Tale both in the play and musical category. I am guessing that is a misprint! Unless she breaks out into song at the end.
I never understand, however what is eligable and what is not. In The Heights at Kings Cross is eligable and Menier Chocolate Factory is not. Is it something to do with who belongs to SLOT?

Lauren Samuels being ignored but Preya being nominated for Bend It Like Beckham is a bit of a curveball (probably irrelevant though. Surely Lara Pulver or Amy Lennox has "Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical" in the bag). I'm pleased that Natalie Dew's been given some recognition though.

It is easy to knit pick and that is exactly what I am going to do.
I wasn't aware that the Kings Cross Theatre was a affiliate theatre.
Agree with Closer to You, should of got nominated, notable admissions here are Elf and Motown.
Best Comedy, surprised that awful A Christmas Carol got a nod, but show-stoppers didn't get a thing, neither did the caustic Bad Jews.
High Society not nominated for best revival.
Still most of the creative awards goes to plays, when are they going to separate the two and recognise them as separate art forms?
Surprised no best set nomination, which I said would win the award and that is Hangman.
What's On Stage have completely misprinted the best actress award (supporting);
Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical
Judi Dench for The Winter's Tale at Garrick Theatre Michele Dotrice for Nell Gwynn at Apollo Theatre Melody Grove for Farinelli And The King at Duke of York's Theatre Catherine Steadman for Oppenheimer at Vaudeville Theatre

For the four Acting categories in Musicals...
Imelda is a lock, no question about it, and she rightly deserves to win in that role, it is iconic and will go down in history as one of the best performances the West End has ever had!
Matt Henry too looks to be a lock for Best Actor, the only spoiler I can imagine is Jamie Parker who was great in Guys and Dolls but even then he is nothing on Matt.
Supporting Actor in a Musical is an open race. I think David Bedella will get it, but I personally would want Dan Burton to get it. He is just fantastic in that role and I loved his performance.
Supporting Actress in a Musical looks like Lara's for the taking, until I saw Mrs. Henderson Presents. It is Emma's show and if that show is gonna win somewhere, this is the category to do it. That said, I would be happy for any of the four to win, they are all brilliant in their respective roles and deserve it!

I'm not in the least surprised 'A Christmas Carol' got a nomination btw. It's got Jim Broadbent in it. This *is* the Oliviers!

Am surprised at the lack of the lead in Hand to God not getting nominated though...
Oh, and I bet Matthew Perry is pissed.

What a bizarre, but relatively predictable set of nominations. Good for In The Heights, I expect the night to belong to Gypsy though.
Can anyone remember who decides the nominees? I know the SOLT members now vote for the actual winners, but who decides this bit?
Also, really what is up with that music category? No mention of Close to You or Nick Skilbeck and the Gypsy Orchestra, but Cyndi Lauper gets a look-in?!

With the exception of Kenneth Cranham, Harry Melling completely outshines the rest of that rag bag of yawn-a-rama 'meh'-inducing performances. Branagh should have been nominated for 'Harlequinade' instead.

I knew Kinky Boots would get it, because it is one of the rare times a music icon has found success so I am not surprised, and I like the Kinky score a lot. I am more surprised In the Heights got in... it should of been a five slot category and put Gypsy and Close to You in, Gypsy was massively robbed here.

I have no idea about the musical noms but the play ones are pretty awful. The usual contingent of famous names who don't deserve it but they hope they'll turn up and make the ceremony glamorous.

The sound design for Hamlet was quite good. I liked the set too. I don't think it deserves nominations for anything other than for the design elements though.

Agreed. If Hamlet deserved any nominations it was for the design-while the set isn't what I'd have personally gone with it was undeniably epic/interesting. Personally I loved the sound design as well.

You gotta feel sorry for the likes of Jamie Foreman, Gemma Sutton, that Siobhan woman in Guys and Dolls etc. for being the only ones out of the leading line up to not be nominated! Jamie would not have a hope in hell but Siobhan was good in Guys and Dolls and Gemma Sutton was fabulous in Gypsy, and that role did win Bonnie Langford a Drama Desk Award back in the day!

Very surprised Preeya Kalidas's nomination. She wasn't in my top three performances (by a female) in that show. Maybe they're just trying to avoid their own mini race-row, not that the Oliviers have been bad on that front in the past.

She was my favourite part of the show (well, her and Sophie Louise-Dann) so I am thrilled at her nomination... Lauren Samuels is a good but not award worthy in my opinion.
Plus, Sophie should of been nominated for Dagenham last year, her number quite nearly stole the show from Gemma.
