London has it's problems but on nice days just wandering through like that brings out it's best side. I never have to hang around enough to notice the problems. I'm down a good half a dozen times a year and I'm quite sure I get more out of the citiy's cultural life than most of the Londoners I know (who all seem necessitated to work 60 hour weeks) Blew off theatre plans tonight for what turned out to be a truly exceptional night of music at the Festival Hall with Greece's Eleftheria Arvanitaki. Had never heard the name before, but knew I was going as soon as I saw the listing. Stunning, clear voice, a good line in yearning ballads, lively dances, intense eastern jams and precisely the right amount of jazz soloing. Didn't understand a word spoken, but comfortably as much love in the room as Erasure last night. Tight acoustic band - piano, bass, basouki, sax, drimsr. She was nothing but poise. NY Times review from a couple of years back - Staying True to Greece While Drawing on Some Wider Influences
My early favourite of hers that wasn't played tonight - Don't want to sleep now.

Ah, thanks for that, will add the lady to my playlist for impending summer holiday on Corfu.
Do you know Savina Yannatou? Her "Songs of the Mediterranean" is one of my all-time favorite albums.

My colleague came back from the States today and she brought me back Carousel (Live from Lincoln Center) DVD so I'm quite pleased!

Feeling mighty grumpy about being in work. And having so much work outside of work to do.
Also screaming into the twitter void with the classic parent telling me "It's different when you have your own" regarding not wanting children.....*screams*

But what do I know? I'm just a simple man without a uterus.

Feeling thoroughly p****d off. Nearly 2 years ago I was asked if I would look after my granddaughters occasionally while my son's partner got a Christmas job. - said OK. Well guess what it's still happening & I'm sick of being expected to drop everything & go there whenever I get a phone call or email. Just received an email telling me I'm looking after them all day next Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. Am I an awful person for feeling fed up?

Defiantly not!! it's one thing to look after them occasionally but to become the default carer for them whenever it suits them isn't on! You shouldn't be expected to drop everything in your life just so they can do whatever in theirs!

Thanks emicardiff. I feel that I can't plan anything. Missed free tickets to shows I would have accepted if not babysitting.I should say they are aged 4 & 8. I do not receive any money for looking after them & the 8 year old isn't actually my grandchild. In fact have got to sign off here in a minute to go & look after them as their mum wants to go somewhere.

Occasionally ask the parents questions like "If you had to manage without one of your children which one would you choose?" or "Would you happen to know which venoms your children are most susceptible to?" and then immediately change the subject.

As far as I can tell the difference is you suddenly want to drink copious amounts of wine at any time of the day and never get a proper nigh's sleep again. And become depressingly familiar with Peppa Pig.

I have married sons, both childless. I would never dream of asking them or their other halves whether they intend to procreate. It's their business, no one else's!
I also have friends whose lives have all but disappeared as they are for ever on grandparent duty. One in particular stands out, when they have to collect their grandchild from their son's house, take him back to theirs and then on to nursery. You wouldn't expect the nursery staff to collect the child from its parents' house, so why should the poor grandparents have to get up at the crack of dawn to do it? It makes me mad - but, then, it's not my business!

Lovely day for walking though not having got home from London until nearly midnight last night and still waking at 3.45 am, I was a bit jaded. It was also rather hot and humid and some of the paths were still quagmires from recent rain, but I stuck mainly to old railway lines, little lanes and wooded routes, so mainly shaded. Astonishing to see yet more vineyards springing up in Surrey and Sussex; at this rate there'll soon be no field crops left. Now enjoying my tea and cake which I feel I've earned!
