On the train back home after a nice mini break. Was at the Cavern Club last night for a Sgt Pepper anniversary thing, which was lots of cheesy fun, and then managed to fit in a gallery this morning. Might have slightly blown the diet but I'm on holiday so decided that I'm allowed the day off.

anita Just say 'No, sorry, I've already made plans for that day'. I know it's tricky but the more you agree, the more you become depended on. My hubby worked with a chap whose daughter & son-in-law never even considered grandad & granny wouldn't be thrilled to look after the sprogs, even to the point of announcing they were off on holiday for two weeks so the kids would be staying at theirs. I don't have any grandkids (and quite happy about that!) but our sons already know that should we be 'blessed'... we'd be happy to see them and have them to stay at times BUT we'll never be unpaid carers!!

I was teaching Masters students today. Usually it's a 6 hour-afternoon/evening session. Except today, only one turned up. Now on one hand I spent a LOT of time outside my 'real' job planning 6 hours of lecture/seminar content.
But on the other the student was an utter delight and we spent 4 of the 6 hours chatting (about the plays assigned and all manner of other things theatre-related) and had an all round lovely afternoon. I'll take that.
Returning to teaching always reminds me how much I hate/suck at the 'day job' too.

Feeling thoroughly p****d off. Nearly 2 years ago I was asked if I would look after my granddaughters occasionally while my son's partner got a Christmas job. - said OK. Well guess what it's still happening & I'm sick of being expected to drop everything & go there whenever I get a phone call or email. Just received an email telling me I'm looking after them all day next Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. Am I an awful person for feeling fed up? Defiantly not!! it's one thing to look after them occasionally but to become the default carer for them whenever it suits them isn't on! You shouldn't be expected to drop everything in your life just so they can do whatever in theirs! Them: "we're bringing the kids over a couple of days next week" You: "You still have your key? Good because I have already made plans for those days" Next time: Them: "We're bringing the kids over tomorrow" You: "You may have a long trip as I will be out of town for the day" If you don't feel comfortable with that then this: "No. That is not good for me". It is up to you to stop them running over you.

I have discovered as I've aged that you actually don't need an excuse to say no to the things you don't want to do. Just say no.

I'm currently in Dublin, seeing Kraftwerk tomorrow night - just checked my emails and found I've got a ticket to see Vic and Bob's Big Night Out being filmed for the BBC in 2 weeks time - wahey!

I have discovered as I've aged that you actually don't need an excuse to say no to the things you don't want to do. Just say no. I've always said "no" to a lot of things, and partly because I'm not that conventional I've never had any difficulty in saying it - though people sometimes seemed to have trouble hearing me! What helps is, as kathryn points out, the fact that you don't need to justify your response and indeed it's better not to as that gives others a way in to try to persuade you.

Anita, sit down with them and your diaries and in a positive manner offer days and listen to their needs. Keep to a routine if possible with regular days. Then everyone knows the schedule. The granddaughters will love knowing what they are doing and when they are in your care. They will plan too!

I had my Open Uni Java exam this morning and then I started my short holiday of "staying at home and doing nothing". Tomorrow we're going to Prestwick to see some friends, so hoping for a sunny day!

All political parties out in force in my town today. UKIP attempting a charm offensive on little old ladies. Labour looking downtrodden. Told by Tory supporter, "there's your MP over there." We are a very safe seat, so no shock decisions likely but, no, she isn't, we don't have an MP until after the result is declared. Also, the previous incumbent has retired, so it's not as if she's hoping to be re-elected.

Set off for a walk to explore a bit more of our local area again. Weather forecast was sunny with the chance of some showers. Lovely. Dressed in cool but showerproof clothing. Followed a footpath we hadn't tried before which took us up a long, twisty and very steep woodland path. Since breaking my elbow, I've been a bit nervous of walking on uneven ground in case I slip, so I was pleased to have conquered what would normally have been easily do-able. However, I do suffer from vertigo and can't handle sheer drops so when we came out onto the top of a scree slope with a narrow track across to navigate I had to admit I couldn't do it which meant retracing our steps, which wasn't much better!
Then the heavens opened. Showers my foot!! We were absolutely soaked through so after about 20 mins of heavy rain and beginning to get a bit cold, we decided to head back home.
It's lovely and sunny now............

Today has been very 'Monday' but I did get to utter the immortal words 'Not everything is about you' to someone. And quite enjoyed it.

I saw a wonderful film called 'My Life as a Courgette today at the cinema'. I was quite overwhelmed actually, I had no idea how much it would affect me for some reason, and I was crying buckets by the end. Such a beautiful animated film

Do other people feel really flat after finishing a run of theatregoing? Having finished my 8-shows-in-6-days last night, today I feel like a 7 year old on Boxing Day.

I saw three shows midweek once and wanted to nap for a month. Although one was Sleep No More, so there was walking involved. As for my day, can't get the printer to work, but at least the tech guy is also baffled. Ha!

Releived that today is the last day of election campaigning, it seems to have been going on forever.

It's only been two years since the last GE, and there was all that Brexit nonsense in the middle. Although I'm pretty convinced the Conservatives are going to win and the next five years are going to be awful, I just need a li'l break from constant electioneering. I don't know how the US copes with it.

The US doesn't cope with it. It's tearing the country apart. It has already done so.

I don't doubt the Conservatives will win it, but I hope their majority is reduced as a reaction to May's arrogance in calling the election in the first place. She seems to think that Theresa Caesar has a nice ring to it.
