I also enjoy the ice skating. This afternoon one of the skaters danced to a medley of music from Jesus Christ Superstar. Yes, that was my favourite of the men's routines, but unfortunately as he didn't land all the jumps only came second. I do find it frustrating that nowadays the scoring is so much about being able to bang in several quads.

I do find it frustrating that nowadays the scoring is so much about being able to bang in several quads. Isn't ice dance the event that's more focused on artistry rather than strength? I find it interesting the different approach of the BBC commentators versus the American ones (at least, as I remember from previous Olympics). The BBC tends to let the events speak for themselves, with minimum commentary to point out something exceptional... the American commentators tend to talk about the athlete's backstory or narrate every aspect of the performance. I really enjoyed the snowslope competition... those kids are crazy and crazy good!

Isn't ice dance the event that's more focused on artistry rather than strength? I suppose to an extent in as far as ice dance is the only one of the 4 disciplines that doesn't require jumps but all 4 disciplines have the artistic score as well as the technical score so should be about artistry as well as jumps - and seeing someone fall over failing to land a jump isn't exactly artistically pleasing!

and seeing someone fall over failing to land a jump isn't exactly artistically pleasing! I'm always surprised that falling down doesn't just take you out of the competition. Of course, Max Parrot in the slopestyle did a double-knee grab (which is apparently a huge point deduction) and the judges missed it and he ended up winning the gold.

Although it's not pronounced that way (because French Canadian, for those who don't know) I can't see his name without thinking he's trying to be as psittacine as he can possibly be.

I'm always surprised that falling down doesn't just take you out of the competition. The danger with that is there might not be many people still in the competition by the time they've done both programmes! Although it's not pronounced that way (because French Canadian, for those who don't know) I can't see his name without thinking he's trying to be as psittacine as he can possibly be. I saw the BBC headline "Parrot wins controversial gold" earlier & for a minute thought there was some sort of alternative Olympics for animals also taking place!

Never win anything and bought a raffle ticket for the Theatre Support Fund charity golden paint brush raffle. Just heard I have won Stockard Channing's brush!

Stories are going round the Winter Olympics that figure skater Kamila Valieva has tested positive for trimetazidine.
It's like the Russians can't do anything without trying to cheat, and I don't know why because they have an abundance of genuine talent that is perfectly capable of winning honestly. At this point I think they should be banned completely as a country — none of this ROC nonsense — and if individual Russian athletes want to compete they must do so as representatives of other countries. (Imagine how a Russian athlete winning a gold for the USA would go down.)

It has been actually quite a sh*tty day- there has been a call from the hospital and we got to take a re-look at some of my husband's reports from last week. My classes are going quite well- we are looking at a very physical theatre version of Grendel - you should check it our because it has such great possibilties for creaturesque work.

ellisael, sorry about the sh*tty week, I sincerely hope it gets better. My week has been a bit of a rollercoaster: I was recently offered (and took) a new job, I got a scholarship to attend a short course... I also had covid, and fell head over heels in love (back in early December, but the "head over heels" phase is still ongoing). And I think it all just overwhelmed me a little this week somehow. But last night I went to a GoGo Penguin concert with a friend, and confirmed the premise that music really does cure all ails. (I couldn't stop grinning, then one song made me cry - I guess I really needed it. The concert was perfection!) I'm so excited for the weekend finally being here, tbh. And theatre: "Operation Mincemeat" tomorrow, and "The Glow" on Monday!

Having lived next door to the neighbours from hell for the last 3 years, they have finally gone. Living next door to people who have no consideration for others by having late night parties and just being anti-social has been a nightmare and stressful at times. Thankfully all that's now gone and myself and others in the street can actually get some peace and quiet in our own homes.

Good luck with who ever comes next, I know how bad inconsiderate neighbours can make life.

Hope the new neighbours are good neighbours My own, perfectly lovely neighbours are going through, rather than from, hell right now. Their house, which is adjoined to mine, was gutted by fire on Saturday. Everyone is safe thankfully. My porch glazing was destroyed by the heat and my front door was broken in by the fire service checking no-one was home (I was safely ensconced in London about to watch the glorious Operation Mincemeat), but otherwise the damage to my house is minimal, save for the acrid smell of smoke everywhere and the film of sooty, greasy residue on every surface. The prospect of the clean-up exhausts me, but then I look at the shell of my neighbours' home and count my blessings.

Your poor neighbours. It is amazing how often there are house fires considering the modern stuff we have now. Hope you all get sorted out. Perhaps your insurance will pay for rented until yours is ok. good luck. Keep us posted

CG on the loose, that sounds awful. I hope it all gets sorted out quickly, and that your neighbours are well covered by their insurance. It is so sad to hear something like that happen, and it's not even mainly about the material cost of it: the idea of losing your home, the one place where you are meant to feel 100% safe, is so scary and sad to me at the same time. Also, we were in the same theatre audience on Saturday! I hope you at least enjoyed the musical, before life brought its scarier side upon you.

Thanks Forrest - both sets of insurers are getting stuck in, so progress will be made, more quickly for me than for my poor neighbours. And yes, I adored the musical... third visit, and it's got better every time. Hope to see it again some day, without the associated drama!

I think you're right, there'll be at least some redecoration needed, but I keep reminding myself I got off lightly. And yes, insurers will cover alternative accommodation - I'm staying with a friend for a few days but will decamp somewhere else in the longer term once I know how long we're talking about.

I was poorly before Christmas with what seemed like a common or garden cold that was doing the rounds in the office. I tested negative on 7 lateral flows and my boss who was patient zero had a negative PCR test so I didn’t go for one. Cos I was 100% it was a cold. However since I’ve not felt completely right, lots of headaches, dizziness and vertigo. I found out last week that my boss actually DID have covid, the testing centre gave him the wrong result! So now I think it might have been covid after all! I went almost a whole week without vertigo and thought I’d turned a corner but it’s come back with a vengeance today! I think stress and tiredness makes it worse. I hope you’re all keeping safe from the storm!

If it wasn't covid, it might be an inner ear infection, labyrinthitis often shows up as dizziness and vertigo, it gets worse if you're tired and stressed and also makes you feel tired as your brain has to work harder trying to work out which way up is. It's viral, just seems to appear and you pretty much have to wait for it to go but once you've had it once can come back. I don't know if that would be better or worse that if its a covid side effect either way hope you feel better soon.

It’s definitely positional, worse with head movement as well. Doc thinks it’s BPPV. I think it’s just going to take time to go. I had labyrinthitis once over a decade ago, and that felt a bit different, but also took months and months to get better! It may not be a covid side effect, it’s just the headaches and dizziness, I don’t have any other symptoms. I just need to be fighting fit by June cos I’m climbing Snowdon for charity!

Hope you recover soon. Which route are you taking up Snowdon? A friend was telling me of the different ones and some sound really hard core.
